More good advice below - this time for the ears!
Hearing damage sneaks up on you when you are cold openwater swimming.
Any ear plug will be better than nothing. But find one that is comfy for you.
I like Mack's.

Subject: [NEW Channel Group] Another way to help stop those swimming nasal colds
Well if Alison (Streeter) is pitching in with the nose plug I guess I can't be shy.
Go to a local hearing aid shop (or ear doctor) and get a custom made set of swimming ear plugs. They fill your ear with a caulking compound...pry it out and get one made in about 3 weeks. Mine cost about $120 (£80, €95, etc.)
They then just slot in...giving 99% moisture protection - at the other end of the nasal passage!
For long open water swims I add a small coat of lanolin - and 100% closed. It also make the open water swim seem warmer and quieter.
It does hinder your hearing....so you don't hear the coach yelling on the pool deck, butterfly sets, boat crew all adding advice at the same time.
But I do hear on-coming propellers, any talk about meeting at the pub after workout and even heard one safety kayaker during the Santa Barbara swim quietly say the word "shark".
It has kept the colds at bay!
