I've been in the Bay lately at 50-51 degrees without a wetsuit. It gets easier, but man is it cold.

i wouldn't wear a wetsuit, but then again - i wouldn't wear one in the SF Bay...its all relative, but I am positive you would survive without one. temps range from 70-75 or so

Is the La Jolla swim a 3 miler or 10 miler? I know they are only a few
weeks apart. I did the 10 a couple of years ago and was great. It was
70, no wetsuit, and well organized.
