Dear All,
Some bad news about Steve Smith, who many of you will know from his Hashing days
with
ONH3 between 2000 and 2004.
Steve died in Nairobi Hospital last Wednesday, apparently of malaria. He fell
sick in
Kampala and was rushed to Nairobi by air ambulance, sadly to no avail.
Although Steve left Kenya a few years ago, he has always made a point of
returning here
during his leave and joining the Hash whenever he's in town. He ran with us
from
Maggie's Pub in Gigiri as recently as April this year.
As you will remember, Steve was in the hotel industry. While in Nairobi he
managed the
Nairobi Safari Club (Lillian Towers). When he left Kenya he moved to Burkina
Faso, from
where he managed a hotel chain with properties across West Africa, and from
there to
Cameroon. Most recently he was in Uganda, where he ran the Royal Commonwealth
Resort at Munyonyo just outside Kampala, the largest and most prestigious hotel
and
conference complex in the country.
His mother and sister Penny have been in Nairobi and a couple of Hashers have
met them
to pass on our condolences. We hope to provide an address for Steve's mother so
that
anyone who'd like to send their own message of support can do so. We also
expect to
organise a memorial run in October – details later.
For now, please wish his family well in their time of sorrow and let's remember
a great guy
and a True Blue Hasher, Steve Smith.
