Who was the greatest long-track rider in the period this group seems to cater
for. My obvious candidates are Josef Hofmeister (Germany), Egon Muller (Germany)
and Basse Hveem (Norway). Other comments would be welcomed. All three now seem
to be the forgotten men of speedway-type sport.

I am looking forward to buying this book and then analysing the reputation of
Tom Farndon against other top performers between 1928 and his tragic death in
1935. From the details given it would seem the book is set to be a very big
seller. I look forward to details later on about where and how to buy a copy by
mail order.

I don't think that's a dirt deflector and I can't really identify the rider or the track. But I have pictures of the 1939 dirt deflector devised by Alec Statham and Norman Parker and of them demonstrating it. I'll find them and post them

Has anyone been able to find an answer to the Home Page action shot circa 1939
and the apparent dirt deflector over the back tyre. Any clues as to who the
rider is and where the photo was taken? And is that a deflector?

There must be many items that were secondly copied ie the dirt deflector, then
patented and produced in much later years earning the eventual patentee a lot of
money. An intriguing topic. Even frame designs, handlebars and perhaps tires.

The veteran intervewed in the clip is indeed Arthur Atkinson. Akko was
joint favourite with Cordy Milne for the 1939 World Championship and
promoted at West Ham after the war with former New Cross star Stan
Greatrex. The other person involved in that interview - the man in the
glasses - is Harold 'Tiger' Stevenson former West Ham and England
captain who organised with Brimingham's Stan Dell the 1946-7 winter
training school which provided a lot of the talent for the new Third
Division which was added to the leagues in 1947. He went on to promote
at Stoke (Hanley).

MALM, Arthur

Born: September 11, 1934, Manly, New South Wales, Australia.

Arthur won his first speedway race in October 1952 at the Sydney Sports Ground
and so began an amazing whirlwind of publicity which had him ear marked as a
future World Champion. The media hype did not escape the notice of the British
promoters and the huge build up continued as his signing by the Glasgow `Tigers'
made front page news in Scotland's second city. A wide-eyed Arthur duly arrived
in Britain with only a few months racing experience behind him and was a huge
flop, failing to live up to his billing which had been so unjustly created.
Plunged into the side for the opening league matches, he was totally at sea and
did not score a league point until his fifth outing in the team in July.

This proved to be the only time he would score in league racing although he did
stay in Glasgow for the winter to build up for the 1954 season, as he had not
made enough money to afford the return ticket to Sydney. However, the White City
track closed before league racing got under way and Arthur sadly returned home
to New South Wales having failed to win another team place. He continued to ride
on the circuits of his home state for several years and returned to Scotland to
get married in 1961. It appeared as though he would try for a place in the
Edinburgh side that season but sailed home before the campaign began.

Malm was pronounced Marm

His Tigers details are in the Glasgow Tigers files on
www.speedwayresearcher.org.uk

He was back in Edinburgh before the 1961 season - I have seen a photo in the
Speedway Special of the Edinburgh Evening News (now in captivity in the National
Library of scotland) showing Arthur in the Old Meadowbank pits.

He never road and went back to Aussie.

Based on Alan Batt's book about Aranui, I recognise the riders from the left as:
Brian McKeown, Ivan Mauger, Barry Briggs, Geoff Mardon, Jack Hart, Kevin Hayden,
Bruce Abernethy.
Match details:
South Island 42 - Briggs 15, Mager 10, Mardon 9, McKeown 8.
North Island 12 = Abernethy 5, Hayden 5, Hart 2. Eric Williams was late
withdrawal from North team.
Match at Aranui - 13th of season 1958-59. No idea of actual date.

I can confirm that arthur malm was a member of the 1953 Glasgow team. he was
quite a character with lots of confidence...he signed the autograph books
"Arthur Malm...full of charm". Advance publicity was a heavy burden for him to
carry with high expectations based on his Australian form.

somewhere there exists a famed photo of Tiger demonstrating his legtrail style

Just a contact that might be of interest to some members - going back to 1954 when stock car racing arrived in Britain. Quite a few riders switched to the cars. Steve Storm (aka Charlie New), Ted Pankhurst, Jimmy Wright, Allen Briggs, Johnny Fry, Ronnie Webb, Gil Graham (aka Gil Cox) were among them. For those members interested, some of their exploits can be found on this site

I have just recieved the California Poppies Book from Bryan Horsnell.
He has a Roy Gutteridge 1956, then on another page he has a Ron Gutteridge.
A Best Pairs Comp.1956, July 15th, had Bobby Croombs (11) and Roy Gutteridge (5) They won that meeting.
Quite a good book.
