The most famous graduate from the army speedways was Squire 'Split'
Waterman, who burst on the sport with Wembley in 1947.
Others who amde their mark from army tracks included Jimmy Coy
(Wimbledon, Eastbourne and Oxford), Bill Kemp (Wembley), 'Bronco'
Wilson (Wembley). There must have been many, many more?
Another who won a lot of fame on army tracks was Vic Orange, who had a
feature about his racing exploits and specially modified bike in
a 'Stenners Journal.'
I don't think Vic Orange rode in league speedway in the UK. I no longer
have the book in which he was mentioned so cannot give any more details
about his racing career.

Hopefully full records for 1960 - 1964 will be appearing on ww.speedwayresearcher.org.uk very soon.
Heat details needed for about 5 meetings needed to complete the records.
Will put needs list on tomorrow. (Monday)

The last update I can find about Colin Sanders was this one on the Romford
Speedway
wesbite. It reads:
"COLIN SANDERS: Updated 17/2/08
" Former Bombers captain Colin Sanders is back in the UK and undergoing medical
treatment
in Poole General Hospital after suffering a severe stroke last year whilst
riding a speedway
bike at the Dade City track in Florida. Colin's sister says he is "severely
disabled and on 24
hours-a-day care. He has no feeling down his right hand side but has some
movement down
his left. Colin is fed through his stomach and can't speak. But he seems to
understand what
people are saying and smiles a lot." Colin has received numerous messages since
being
hospitalised and is said to be amazed that so many people still remembered him
from his
grasstrack, speedway and cycle speedway days. Further messages would help him
greatly
and they should be sent to Colin Sanders, Portland Ward, Poole Hospital,
Longfleet Road,
Poole, Dorset, BH15 2JB."
This comment in 'Tears and Glory' looks intriguing:
"Early chapters cover speedway in Berkshire before the Racers arrived at
Tilehurst in 1968.
As well as California near Wokingham, a previously unknown venue revealed for
the first
time."
I am told the track "revealed for the first time' was at Bracknell. So far not
seen the book - so
can anyone advise further on this? But not too much detail or it will spoil
reading Arnie
Gibbons' book.

Fans of Plymouth and Romford, in particular, will recall Colin Sanders from the
late
60s/early 70s. He was Plymouth Devils' No.1 in 1969 before a couple of
injury-plagued
seasons with the Bombers.
Sad to report that Colin is none too well these days and, on behalf of his
family, I'm
posting this in the hope that some of you who read it will take the time and
trouble to
write to Colin, to let him know that he is still remembered by fans in the UK.
(Personally,
as an 11-year-old, I recall getting his autograph on numerous occasions in the
car park
after meetings at Brooklands in 1971.)
Colin has spent the last 23 years living a rather lonely existence in the USA,
and it was
while riding a motorcycle at the Dade City Raceway in Florida last summer that
he suffered
the major stroke that has left him paralysed down both sides of his body and
unable to
speak.
He is, however, able to hear and understand what is being said to him.
Apparently, he can
also read, hence this appeal for a few 'best wishes' type messages. We'll be
sending him
copies of Backtrack and VSM mags to try and give him a lift but any additional
written
messages of encouragement from forum members would be most welcome.
Colin's sister, Carole, has been in touch with us to say that her brother was
flown back
from the States this week and is now in Poole General Hospital. We're not
encouraging
visitors - Colin is not well enough for that at this stage - but letters or
cards can be sent
to him via his sister at:

On the information regarding the Provincial League between 1960-64, the
following
progression appears:
Of the 1960s starters, Cradley Heath, Poole, Sheffield, Stoke, Rayleigh,
Edinburgh were active
in 1961.
In 1962, Cradley Heath, Edinburgh, Poole, Sheffield, Rayleigh, Stoke were
starters.
In 1963, Edinburgh, Poole, Rayleigh, Sheffield, Stoke, Cradley Heath.
In 1964, Edinburgh, Poole, Sheffield, Cradley Heath.
New entrants in 1961 who continued in 1962 were Exeter, Newcastle. They
continued into
1963 with the addition of Middlesbrough. These teams were joined by Hackney and
Long
Eaton for the 1964 season.
New Cross were allowed to join the Provincial League simply because
they wanted to I would imagine.
In 1946 Birmingham & Norwich were in the Northern League as that was
the alternative to Division One and the Provincial League was the
alternative to the then National League. I think Hackney Wick came in
the Provincial league as well.
Wolverhampton were at one time in the Southern League and back in the
early days Belle Vue had a team in both Northern & Southern Leagues.
Nowadays Berwick is considered "Scottish" but is in England and such
things as this have never played much of an important part in
Speedway matters

Speedway emerged from a period of depression with the start of the Provincial
League in
1960.
Does anyone have these stats please?
(1) How many tracks started in the league?
(2) How many of them were operating when the competition "moved on" to link with
the
British League?
(3) Overall, how many tracks competed at Provincial League level?
I have found these riders as representing Edinburgh in the brief 1930 season:
George McKenzie, Drew McQueen, Syd Parsons, Len Stewart, Gordon Spalding, Bill
Barclay.
Thanks to the Speedway Reseracher.
Marine Gardens is on the web - look in 1946 -1964 section.

Thank you for the contact. I have been into the wesbite. I could not find any team line- ups for 1929 or 1930 for either Edinburgh or Glasgow.
However, I found these riders for Glasgow in the 1931 Northern League: George Mckenzie, Norrie Isbister, Percy Dunn, Alfie Williams, Drew McQueen, Andy Nichol, Arthur Moser, Billy Llewellyn, Arthur Mann, George Hazzard.
I would assume that basically the same riders were with Glasgow the previous season 1930. I wonder who rode for Edinburgh that season?
Edinburgh & Glasgow were in Northern League of 1930. Edinburgh closed mid season.
Glasgow were in the Northern League og 1931 but folded mid season.

A special mention too, to ex-Sydney Showground sidecar rider Ray Andrieux who
debuted
his restored HRD Vincent. And what a magnificent looking machine it is.
Standing out in pristine red and chrome livery, twin chrome straight through
exhausts
compliment the McGee fuel injection unit, the second (and last) such unit made
for a
speedway sidecar (the other being for Doug Robson's national championship
winning
machine).
For many years other states have had a Vincent. Now Queensland has something to
crow
about. And a more beautiful example of this former giant of the dirt track I
doubt you'll
find anywhere.

Eric and Oliver Langton were stalwarts of the great Belle Vue team of pre-war
years. Eric also
rode for BV in 1946-47, both were England test riders.
In 1936, Eric was beaten by Lionel Van Praag (Australia) after a tie-break in
the first World
Championship at Wembley.
The Australian rider Steve Langton was one of the top riders post-war at
Brisbane's
Exhibition Speedway, along with Charlie Spinks, Keith 'Little Boy Blue' Gurtner,
Keith Cox and
Dickie Smythe.
Steve's nephew Bonnie Langton had a bright spell at the Ekka in the mid-to late
1950s.
