Ellen Grosskreutz, wife of Australian speedway legend Max Grosskreutz, died on 8th November 2009.
From 1930 Max rode for the famous Belle Vue league team. He rose to fame and was rated among the worlds best riders.
During this period he met Ellen McMahon the proprietors daughter, at the Devonshire Hotel. The couple wed in England in 1934, resettling in the seaside suburb of Rose Bay, Sydney.
Max represented Australia in the very first test match (at Wimbledon, 1930) and continued to do so, 17 years later. Max died in 1994 and the couple leave two daughters, Maxine and Sandra, and seven grandchildren.
Ellen Grosskreutz was 102.

I think you will find that the correct spelling of the Australian who
signed for Glasgow White City was Arthur Malm who, at 18, was
described as 'another Graham Warren', but it never really happened. He
landed his contract after only six weeks racing experience at Sydney.
In 1953 he is recorded as scoring one point for White City and
thereafter appears to have dropped off the radar.

Thanks for the answer re Tom O'Connor. It makes it very clear that in no way did
Tom O'Connor have any link to the Irish track at Santry in the 1940s. That wins
me a pint!

Ermolenko to take charge at Leicester Speedway

The long awaited arrival of speedway in Leicester next year will be masterminded
by Sam Ermolenko, a former world champion and multi World Team Cup gold medal
winner. The 48 year old from Californian will lead the Lions into a new era in
March 2010 when the sport returns after a gap of twenty-seven years. Ermolenko
was introduced to a large gathering of speedway fans on Saturday evening at a
Leicester Speedway Supporters Club event and received an enthusiastic welcome to
the news of his appointment.

The Lions will race at a new £4.5m purpose built sports complex in Beaumont
Leys. Construction of the speedway stadium is due to begin shortly, to be
completed in readiness for the Leicester Lions to take their place in the
British Premier League next March.

Ermolenko is an advocate of creating opportunities for new entrants into the
sport and said: "my vision is to provide a place for people to learn the
rudiments of the sport at grass roots level and so provide a springboard for the
next generation of household names".

Such is his commitment to creating a learning culture that Sam is in discussions
with the Auto-Cycle Union, a governing body for motorcycle sport, for the new
Leicester stadium to become a recognised national training centre for speedway
riders.

Shrewd

Ermolenko comes with a vast depth of knowledge, having first raced in the UK in
1983. After a short spell at Poole he transferred to Wolverhampton, leading the
club to their first British League title. Sam also gained league championships
with Bydgoszcz (Poland) and Valsarna (Sweden) and is regarded as one of the most
influential captains of his era. He was also elected `Rider Representative' by
his peers and his passion for improving safety led to innovative design
modifications to speedway bikes.

Since retiring in 2005 Sam has remained involved with speedway and three years
ago was the sporting director for the Reading team, runners-up in the league.
He is also a successful TV pundit for Sky Sports and can be seen giving his
expert opinion during speedway matches and World championship Grands Prix. The
new Lions supremo is mindful of the history of speedway in Leicester that dates
back to 1928 and said: "I am honoured to be associated with such a proud
heritage and look forward to making the Lions worthy ambassadors for the city of
Leicester". http://www.leicester-speedway.com/

To the best of my knowledge, Arthur Malm, rode for Glasgow at some time and his
son now resides in Sydney. So I guess there are two gentlemen with similar

Arthur Mann shows up in one of my 1932 Syney Royale programs. He does not show
up in any of my other programs. It says he is from Brighton (Australia I
presume) He is riding a Rudge with a black race jacket with orange circles on
it! Other than that I no nothing about the man. Hopefully Ross Garrigan will see
this and comment on him.

Interesting question....who was Arthur Mann.......on checking the programme once again Arthur was not one of the programmed riders, he replaced Frank Pearce (High Beech) for the entire meeting......but there is no other reference to him in the programme.......Here is an article I found with Arthur Mann's name in it.....

Frederick Stilley, from Sydney was one of the most resolute riders on the Australian small dirt speedways. He lost his life through a fall owing to a collision on Wentworth Oval, Sydney, on Saturday, 27 September 1930 evening.

The accident happened shortly after a flying start, Frederick Stilley was competing in the first semi-final of an important scratch race with two other prominent performers as "Cyclone" Mookey and Arthur Mann. The three machines crossed the starting line at a speed of about 35 mi/h, almost in a line. Stilley took a wide sweep, attempting to rush past Mookey. His machine skilled violently across the track, throwing him in the path of Mann, who just missed the fallen motorcycle, but was unable to avoid the prostrate rider. Mann's front wheel appeared to strike Stilley near the shoulders, and he himself was also hurled off his machine. Arthur Mann rose a few seconds later and was able to walk away. Frederick Stillev died soon after admittance to Sydney hospital

I would like to correct the spelling of the rider's name - it is Blos Bromfield.
These are some details about him in the match. It seems he was third in heat two
behind George Greenwood and Norman Evans, ahead of his team mate Ron Johnson
(Overseas). Third in heat six behind Jim Kempster, his team mate Charlie Spinks
(Overseas), but ahead of Roger Frogley. In heat eight he was second to George
Greenwood. ahead of Evans and Charlie Datson (Overseas).

There is speculation that Costa Mesa, the track where Jack Milne and Harry Oxley were involved with the big California/USA revival in the early 1970s, may be sold by its site owners, the California State in 2010. That could mean the end of speedway there.
Is more known about this. Does anyone have memories of the time when speedway was revived and recall any of the riders who were involved? One who springs to mind is Don Hawley. Who else pioneered the big revival season? Possibly Bill Cody, Mike and Steve Bast were among them?

Until about two years ago I know that Denys was a regular visitor to Wimbledon
on the Sundays when stock cars raced. I'm not so sure if he is still around
because he must be in his early eighties by now. I hope he is still with us.

early 1930s - he certainly once told me that he saw Vic Huxley ride there as
well as recalling a 1936 visit to Plough Lane by the legendary American
stuntman-cum-speedway rider Putt Mossman.

role. I know that he again told me of an interview he was involved in with Jimmy
Gibb (Wimbledon and Canada) for the BBC, probably in 1951. Gibb then told him
that eventually the crowds would move away from the sport as television grew in
popularity. Gibb, of course, was a professional film and TV cameraman and
technician - how right he was!

oval (stock car) car racing. Again a renowned writer on that sport. The last I
hear of Denys, just after Wimbledon Speedway closed, was that he still went to
car meetings there. At the time he was living in South Wimbledon.
