Re: [oldtimespeedway] Re: Lionel Van Praag

Of course he did. I have quite a deal of material written about Lionel's England season in 1931. One of his nicknames in Australia before he went to England in 1931 was "Lion" Van Praag. One clever journalist in England was quick off the mark and referred to Lionel soon after he arrived as the Wembley Lions "latest Lion".

Should anyone have a special interest in Lionel Van Praag, I am currently writing an account of his first season's racing in Australia (1926-27, the season Jim Shepherd passed over) for the Australian Speedway History Page on Craig Fordham's website. The reason I'm doing it is to put the record straight.

Jim Shepherd was wrong. Lionel Van Praag rode for Australia against England in the 1931
test series.

Lionel Van Praag first went to England in 1932? Give me a break!!! There are people who
actually do grass roots research you know and not just use what other people have written
or what others have told them happened.

John, you aren't the only one to be caught out by Jim's errors. I read some glowing reviews of the Australian speedway history book Jim wrote a few years back....

Steve, if you think I'm going to sit down and watch all that DVD and list the errors in it for you, you're mistaken - I have better things to do. However, here...

Sadly, the LVP errors most likely will be perpetuated, especially as VSM in future years is likely to be researched by historians. The sad things is, that even...
