Hey Folks,

Over the years, I've read many accounts of how the Martial Arts have
saved lives. I never thought I'd be giving one myself.

This past Saturday after eating a late breakfast, my girlfriend,
Charla, and I decided to go watch the Harold Long Memorial
Tournament. There was a group from Wheeler's attending, so we wanted
to show our support. During the continuous sparring competition,
around 4 pm, Charla started complaining of a numbness/burning
sensation in her left arm accompanied by some nausea and lethargy.
At this point, I knew that we might be in trouble…

We were very blessed to have in attendance at the tournament two
parents from our dojo Drs. Ed and Pam Mobley, which both are
anesthesiologists at the University of Tennessee. They assessed the
situation correctly and called 911. After a few minutes, her
conditioned worsened and she started having a severe seizure,
followed by cardiac arrest. It took about 2 minutes of CPR to revive
her. After being stabilized, she was transported to UT Hospital.

We were told by the Doctors that had we not been at the tournament
and had access to the immediate medical attention by the Mobleys,
she would not have survived. Charla was diagnosed with a condition
called a Brain Ateriovenous Malformation. This is a congenital
condition that seldom shows any symptoms, with a mortality rate 10-
30% from the initial attack.

Charla came through the attack with no brain damage or paralysis; in
fact she got released from the hospital on Monday afternoon. Now we
have a road ahead of us as she comes to a decision regarding
treatment options to avoid any reoccurrences, but given the
condition that she was in Saturday afternoon, her recovery was not
anything short of miraculous.

One could say that an independent, unrelated series of events came
together by coincidence to save Charla's life… I won't, Master
Wheeler taught me better than that.

Thank God for his mercy,

Jim Alley

Dan,

She is having a Cerebral Angiogram sometime this morning, hopefully they can go ahead and correct the problem then, but we don't know anything yet. We'll deal with whatever hand is delt us, she has come a long way since Saturday. She still don't remember anything after her initial symptoms started, but is really sore from the CPR. We are very fortunate to still have her with us.

Thanks,

Jim

Jack,

Good observation.

IMHO turns or direction changes in kata can be thought of as a
continuation of the technique that directly precedes it as an
application of a throw, lock, or break. I concentrate on each
individual technique and then work backwards or forwards from there.
Stepping into directly into an attack (your opponent's power zone) to
make a block against a physically superior attacker might not be the
best choice of technique or application of that particular technique.

Theories about bunkai vary, this is just my 2 cents worth...

Just an observation that I wondered if anyone wanted to comment on:
The majority of change of direction movements in Kata result in a
block and/or step on the side moving into the direction of the turn.
Obviously (to me anyway) this is because the leading side is most
vulnerable to attack, but there some exceptions. Can anyone provide a
rationale for this?
