The "Camp Fuji Cycling Challenge" will be held on 11 June. All applications
must be received via standard mail or MPS (not electronically) by 26 May.
Please "network" this information anyone else that you think may be interested.
This "first of its kind" event aboard Camp Fuji has been meticulously planned
with the assistance of MCCS and Mr. Oguro of R&I, a Japanese contractor that
organizes various athletic events. This gentlemen is providing an electronic
lap counter for providing exact standings and final results. We are expecting
over 200 Japanese participants and over
10 booths set-up by various Japanese distributors of bicycle and related
equipment. Camp Fuji is using the race as an opportunity to not only promote
the sport of cycling, but community relations as well. We plan on doing this by
setting up static displays of vehicles and equipment and MCCS is working on
booking a live band. A BBQ-style lunch of hotdogs and hamburgers will also be
available at a nominal cost. All in all, it should be an enjoyable event for
everyone.
The course is a challenging one with about half of it being an uphill grade of
3-4%. A category is available to enter for any level of rider on any type of
mechanically-sound bicycle. The gates will be open by 0600, registration from
0700-0800, and the first race (the Advanced Road race) beginning at 0830.
If you have any questions regarding this event, please contact me via e-mail at
<clemensb@...>, or phone at DSN: 265-5602/5346, or commercial at
(0550)89-6102.

Those that want to go shorter (or longer, or faster, or slower) are
always welcome to start with any group and then go on their own.
1. The regular Kadena gate 2 ride should be on as normal; depart
gate 2 at 0700, determine route before leaving.
2. There will also be a 0600 gate 2 ride this week (at least for
me). I want to watch some people take part in an open water race
(3km) at Cape Zampa, 0900. The plan is to leave gate 2 at 0605, head
towards White Beach, then up past Hansen, over the 104, South on 58
to Cape Zampa, watch Steve and Colin, then head off for home or more
riding.
3. Don't forget the North loop ride (in an earlier message), meet
0700 at Scwhab Gym, North to Aha, West to Yona, South on 58 to Nago,
East on 329 to Schwab (Anyone interested, please call Bob Reed at 636-
3138).
Enjoy your weekend,
Mat

The deadline for international entries has been extended to 28 April, 2000.
The Japanese deadline is not being extended.
This event offers 100 qualifying slots for the Ironman Championships in
Hawaii. It is taking place in Cheju, a small island just south of Korea.
Costs about $500 to fly there, rooms are between $75 and $200/night. I know
of a couple of people going already; total entrants up around 1,125.

Subject: "Okinawa Velo"
1. Okinawa Velo; Open to all USFJ and civilians. Meets Saturday mornings at
0700, Gate 2 Kadena Air Force Base, next to the USO(so locals can simply wait
outside the gate without getting a pass).
2. Rides vary. Usually, the pack will head north towards Nago. If we get more
than ten cyclists, we can split into rides for variety and ability. Even if
there's only one ride, it starts out slow and you may turn back at any time. We
have cyclists with abilities ranging from beginner(10-15mph) to competitive
athletes(25-30mph).
3. We are ordering jerseys/tri-singlets for the club and taking names, sizes
and money for "Louis Garneau" brand clothing. POC Dennis Fahey.
<FaheyDF@...>
4. The basic philosophy of the club is this(if I may): "To encourage bicycling
and fitness on Okinawa. To make available a centralized group of enthusiasts
who enjoy the sport of cycling competitively and non-competitively. To be good
ambassadors of the USA, Japan and especially, the sport of cycling to the people
in Okinawa, Japan and the Far East."
Reed CWO2 Robert J <ReedRJ@...>
For Jamie Castro, about bike shops, The new "cycling club, Okinawa Velo" formed
and the former "Shoguns" used the following shops.
1. Okinawa Velo is sponsored by "Ishikawa Cycles", located on rte 74, just off
the Kadena Rotary in Kadena Cho. Ishikawa-san is a very good bike mechanic and
sells Treks and other bikes.
2. "Route 329 cycles" is owned by Ikehara-san. Located on rte 329 in
Ishikawa-shi, he is a very good mechanic and has a variety of bikes for sale.
3. "Komesu cycles" is owned by Komesu-san on rte 330, next to the "shrine" in
Futenma-cho in beteen MCAS and Foster. Komesu-san sponsors a triathlete team
and races, himself.
4. "Bridgestone Bike Shop("Okinawa Ring-yo") is the largest on Okinawa, located
in downtown Naha on rte 58. Gima-san is a mechanic there, don't know if he owns
the shop. Lots of parts and bikes.
5. "Kamida" is a tri-pro shop located on rte 330 south of Gate 2, KAB, but
before the Plaza Shopping Center. Kamida-san has a mechanic and build bikes. A
variety of tri-gear as well.

Hello All,

I have spoken with several people who want a jersey but unfortunatly I forgot to
write their names down. If you already sent me an e-mail I have you on the
list, If you did not send an e-mail please send me one so I can add you to the
list. If you are unable to make the Saturday ride and would like to order a
jersey you can send me a check to: Dennis Fahey, PSC 559, BOX 5232, FPO AP

If you send a check via mail please e-mail me the size you want to order.
Thanks Dennis
This is some general information on Okinawa Multi-Sport events;
please let me know if you have any additions, changes, etc. I want to
make it a regular welcome message for new people and a monthly
reminder for regular members.
========== Bicycle Rides ==========
1. Regular Road Bicycle Rides - Chnages will normally be sent via
email.
A. Saturdays, leave Kadena Gate 2 at 0700. Usual ride is to Nago
and back, 50 to 60 miles, fast group does it in 3 hours, and other
riders do a shorter route or turn back earlier and pick-up the group
on the way back.
B. Sometimes a second group leaves from Camp Schwab and does a
northern loop ride (90 to 100 miles).
C. There are other group rides that leave from various camps during
the week; Send a message to the group asking for more information and
those that do them will reply to you with more details (assuming they
are taking place).
D. If you want to do a specific ride, send a message with the
meeting place/date/time and everyone will get a copy.
2. Mountain Bike riding - check the website -
http://members.tripod.com/~omba/ or email to: klattm@...

========== Swim Practice ==========
Adult practice hours - Adults come as often or as little as they
desire - we recommend at least three times each week, but there is no
required number of workouts.
Mon. through Thur. 1700-1815 and Tues. through Fri. 0530-0630
There is a coach at all of these practices running a workout for the
adults (the PM practice actually gets a coach at 1715, but most
swimmers start warming up early). We offer some stroke tips, hints,
etc. as we run the workout. Swimmers are free to do the group
workout (broken down into three different ability levels) with
everyone else, do the workout on their own, or do their own workout
and just ask/have us watch them to help with their stroke technique.
Try it for a week, then there is a seasonal fee of $25.00 (one season
is Oct. - Mar, second season is Apr - Sep). We take one week off in
Mid March and one in early August, and we don't hold practice on most
major holidays, otherwise we hold adult practices 50 weeks of the
year.
We are at the Foster 25 From September through mid-June, the Foster
50 from mid-June into August.
