I looked for messages from you and could not find any, so sorry if
this is the same question you get all the time. How were you able
to get the vertical shaft of the lawn mower engine to work with a
horizontal setup. Any and all info you have would be great. Do you
have a websight documenting your buildup? Where can you buy
whatever part it takes to change from vertical to horizontal
motion. If "blurrban" is no longer around, does anyone else know
the answers to my questions. Thanks.
--- honestly you hit the nail on the head,The edge buggies or desert
carts plans would be your best bet.Personally i am a edge or

fan but check them all out and see what suits you best.
Buggy plans are worty there weight in gold no matter who you end up
going with.

This is a easy update, nothing new to say.Busy time of year and i am
hitting the part AGAIN where i am sick of working on the buggy.I
started building us a new master bath 1 1/2 years ago and really need
to get back to work on that for awhile.I still plan to have the R6
done this spring but i need a break for a bit.If you seen our future
master bath you would understand why i need to get going on it.Its
been rough plumbed and framed since early spring and just siting
there.
we are currently working a deal with a developer that is tring to
build a huge mall in our back yard. They have already spent over 8 mil
on property adjoining ours. They only want just less than 1/2 acre of
my property for what they want to do and the 35K they are offering is
sounding tempting. It would help us out a ton and make theses projects
much more affordable.

Cool keith,Wish i had done something like that in school.Cant wait to

hello all new to this group , we have a murray built kart with a 6
hp side shaft engine on it it does ok but wanting more power , we
are wanting to go to a 10-18 hp side shaft engine , if anyone has or
knows of anyone who has one that would be willing to part with one
please let me know , prefer a running engine ,,,any info would be
greatly appreciated , thank you jeff
hey guys. sorry its taken me a while to get to the point in school to
where i can not start being more active in the group again. i have
joined the mini-baja team here at my school (univ. of detroit mercy).
eventhough i am a chemist, all majors are welcome so i can continue my
love of this wonderful sport. i have taken some pictures of the build
that i will post when i can. i have to talk with Max (the team leader)
to see if this is ok because this is a competition.
with our build we started with a steel table. we had some scrap pieces
of tube that we milled with a holesaw so that every length was the
same and we used this as a base for our frame. at first it was a pain
but it paid off in the end. last weekend max and myself (the only ones
that showed to work the whole weekend) took the frame off the jig and
placed it on the ground. no rocking at all. we measured some lengths
from a few places and everything seems to be in place completely to
the design that we have in autocad. this is just a thought for anyone
that has a table big enough for this jig. the table has to be bigger
than the frame itself. i plan to use this same idea for next years
frame. max will not be returning since he is graduating so i will most
likely be the team leader. something that i would like to try for next
year is an independant rear suspension. no one has had the time to
work on this so i plan on spending part of my summer to design
something. if anyone has some pointers go ahead and email me.

yes, you are right-- but there are some groups/organizations you can
join to prevent these city slickers from overrunning our riding
areas. search for these groups -- or I can find the clubs/groups and
post them -- lemme know
There are a lot of riding areas in NC, but they are spaced evenly
apart and uh.... long drive to a few of them.
I've sold my buggies and most of the parts I had laying around. I
still have all my fab tools, but do most/all of my work at school
(which is a long way from home).
I have recently purchased a four wheeler so I can go home on the
breaks and ride. I also have a group at ncatvtrails that rides most
every weekend at various location in NC... but I can't make it but
once every 6-8 weeks.... oh well so goes life.

Hey --
Yeah i'm still around -- i apologize for neglecting the group for
quite some time now.
I am concentrating in mechanical engineeering.. in fact I'm almost
done.
My senior design is the mini-baja project-- I'm the team captain and
there are 6 students on the design/build team. I will post a link
to our website soon.
I'm working on applying to polaris industries as a project engineer
or senior design engineer-- we'll see what happens with that. I'd
really enjoy that kind of work/job/career.
How are the projects going? Anything new? Pictures?

Well after a couple weeks on messing around i am finnaly on line
out in the shop.I ended up bring my hard drive down to a repair shop
and they found that all the drivers had been deleated and needed
reinstalled. They reworked the whole pc and did a new installe on
everything for $80.00.So i brought the pc home and it worked fine but
still would not connect the internet.I have the shop pc connected to
a linksys router at the house,The router has lights that show when a
pc is properly connected, the house pc would show a solid light on the
router while the shop pc would have a blinking light.I called
linksys, best buys and radio shack and talked to 3 different tech guys
and they all said the blinking light was fine.B.S. Shows what they
know.My shop pc is about 175' from the router so i had made my own
patch cable,I found the problem was with one of my crimped ends that
i did,As soon as i found the problem and corrected it both lights
stayed on steady and the pc connected to the net so here i am.Now you
guys i have to deal with me much more often.I am considering hooking
up a shop build cam. What do you think?

Ok all of you off-road desert racing nuts. Here is the story. I
have been priveledged enough to have been invited to be on "Wind

7:00pm pacific to talk about this years Baja 1000. They are going
to shoot my part of the segment at my race shop that night.
This is where all of you come in. This is our chance to show Speed
Channel how big desert racing is and that they need to be covering
our sport more often, and give it the press it deserves. This is
how we can do it. We need anyone and everyone to either call in
during the show or email questions to the show, and the questions can
even be just about desert racing in general. This can be done at 1-
866-W-Tunnel or email at windtunnel@.... I want them to
get bombarded with response from all of you. We need to show them
the fans are out there and they want more desert racing. Tell
everyone you know. Lets continue to promote this sport and give it
the attention it truly deserves.
Like I said, this is our chance to show the nation that we are a
sport that deserves television coverage. We have some awesome
people and fans in our industry with some great stories to be told,
just like, if not better than the other forms or racing out there
that are getting the air time. Lets all pull together and show your
support.

of that cost is the 4 CV bearings that were $107.00 each.

I'll be switching to no e-mail for a while. I go in for hand surgery
Wednesday morning thanks to some arthritis. That pretty much puts an
end to any buggy building plans for a while...
If you have the money, use comet's 700 series torque converters. The
770, 780, and 790 series units are very low geared and have a high
top end (low ratio is about 3.7:1 and high is an amazing 0.69:1)--
this makes for low gearing and high end speed because of the
overdrive. These units will run you around $400-$500 for a driver &
driven. This unit uses a 1 1/8 belt that has less slippage than most
torque converters at it's size.
If you don't have a pile of money laying around like that, the comet
40 series provides a very durable unit that works well on smaller
engines. I think the 44c magnum driver unit and the 44d driven unit
provide the best low end (around 2.8:1) and max out in high gear at
1.21:1. This won't give you as much "pull" as the 700 series, but it
will be a great unit at about half the cost (expect to pay $250-
$300).
Many different belt center distances are available for both units.
You can call comet at 1-800-999-8161 and someone can help you find
the belt you need, but I don't know if you can order parts from them
(they may refer you to a dealer).
If you plan on pushing more than 12hp out of that engine, go with the
700 series or maybe the 90 series (94c & 90d).
Hope this helps

I should have the engine mount done this weekend.
I'm actually making a "sub-frame" for the engine that will then mount to the
kart frame. This will make for easy engine removal as well as preserve the
existing mounts should my engine fail and I need to use a more traditional
powerplant.
I'm also using a jackshaft to get my final ratio. The good thing, of course, is
that I can change sprocket sizes with ease, should the current 6.07 ratio prove
inefficient.
Does anyone have any RPM and/or torque stats on engines. I can calculate what
mine should be, but want something to compare it to (like a 16hp Briggs with or
without a torque converter, etc.)
This way I at least know that my engine is in the ballpark for being capable of
handling my kart.

I've actually decided to try and use the motorcycle engine. Having a gear

If it doesn't work, I'll try a B&S engine. It's cheaper for me to try the
motorcycle engine route anyway.

I think I'd go for the 18 HP B&S engine. It has much more torque than a CM250,
and then you don't need a gear shifter. The 16 HP Briggs motors are about 500 cc
engines. That rig is a trails machine mostly, which implies you want
controllable torque vs. rev speed in an engine.

Eldon,
I'm not sure yet. I'm either going to try and use a Honda CM250

What's your take on the idea? Would a 250cc cycle engine be "strong"
enough.

Hey everyboby just now got my swing arm completed and mounted and
getting ready to completly figure out the whole clutch/jackshaft
setup for my kart. First off i am going to usa a Honda GX240(8 hp),
but am planning on doing some mods such as: custom header, remove

If it doesn't work, I'll try a B&S engine. It's cheaper for me to try the
motorcycle engine route anyway.

I think I'd go for the 18 HP B&S engine. It has much more torque than a CM250,
and then you don't need a gear shifter. The 16 HP Briggs motors are about 500 cc
engines. That rig is a trails machine mostly, which implies you want
controllable torque vs. rev speed in an engine.

Eldon,
I'm not sure yet. I'm either going to try and use a Honda CM250
motorcycle engine that I already have or save up and get around an
18hp Briggs (what Mark had).
What's your take on the idea? Would a 250cc cycle engine be "strong"
enough.

I'm hoping to get 750. My buy it now would be for 799. Most 16hp v-
twins are going for around 600-700 right now (very few on ebay), but
they usually have no hours. Mine has about 6-8 hours of runtime.
If I can get 225 for the 90 series torque converter I'd sell it. It
uses a 1 & 3/16 belt ( i have three so I'd include one).
Thanks!
