02.08.2005/ Jan Ullrich won a criterium race in Lorsch, southern Germany, on
Monday evening in front of 35,000 enthusiastic cycling fans. The T-Mobile
captain beat talented young guns Markus Fothen (Gerolsteiner) and Linus
Gerdemann (CSC) into second and third spot in a sprint finish.
"There's a fantastic atmosphere here, which is very touching," said Ullrich,
who defended the title he won in Lorsch last year, and also clocked up his
third criterium win within a week.
Attack after attack
With 90 laps to cover and a total distance of 81km, the race was marked by
numerous attacks. Jan Ullrich and Erik Zabel featured in one earlier break
that built up a lead of 20 seconds. That break was reeled in after a few
laps, and the field were all together for the final sprint won by Ullrich,
with Erik Zabel finishing fifth.
