- LAST UPDATED 26 OCTOBER 2004 -

When we go into TC-2 = Youth Swim Team canceled, pools "clean-up" (lane-lines
stored, etc.).

If we go into TC-2 during practice or during the bus runs:
1. If a dedicated swim team bus has made pick-ups, they will stop at the pool,
then deliver swimmers to their home destinations once the DOD/SAC buses have
made their drop-off at the pool.
2. If a DOD/SAC bus has made pick-ups, they will deliver the swimmers to the
pool.
3. Swimmers at the pool will be delivered to their home destinations.

If TC-2 occurs prior to the regular bus pick-up from schools, the buses do not
make pick-ups, swimmers should go home via alternate means (the same way they
would on a Friday when there is no afternoon youth practice).

IF A SWIMMER GETS ON A DOD/SAC BUS FOR SWIM TEAM PRACTICE WHEN THERE IS NO
PRACTICE DUE TO TC-2, THE BUS WILL DELIVER THEM TO THE POOL. THE SWIMMER MUST BE
PICKED UP FROM THE POOL BY A PARENT/GUARDIAN.

TC-1 = Masters Practice canceled, pools close.

Clean-up procedures to re-open a pool after a typhoon can vary from a few
minutes to a few days.

Youth Swim Team resumes no earlier than 24-hours after All-Clear. We want to get
back to practices as soon as possible, but realize that we cannot use the pools
until they are in working order.

If in doubt, contact the pool. Foster 25 - 645-7554, Kubasaki 50 - 645-9190,
Aquatics Office - 645-3180

We hope you all had a great Thanksgiving, and without further delay, here
are this weeks updates and articles:

COMBO - Mini-Pull Fly/Breast - Drill of the Week
The young swimmer featured in slow motion on this Drill of the Week recently
took part in a state relay team -- AS A SEVENTH GRADER. This footage was
taken some time ago; since then, she has grown up a little. We are featuring
her this week as a way to congratulate her on her accomplishments, and to
let her know that there is no limit to what she can achieve if she continues
to work hard.

Magic Beans
Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, there was a swimmer. Not just any
swimmer, but someone who had a desire to go FASTER than he had ever gone
before. But even though this swimmer felt like he worked hard all the time,
he was never able to achieve the results he felt he deserved. Eventually he
became unhappy and discouraged because he couldn't figure out WHY he wasn't
faster.

The Test
When I was a kid, there was a cartoon that I absolutely could not go
without, and that was G.I. Joe. I guess it was my need to be utterly
surprised when G.I. Joe somehow foiled Cobra Commander's sinister plans on
EVERY SHOW.

Go Swim Summer Camp '05
It is hard to believe, especially with the turn in the weather, but it's
time to start thinking about summer swim camps. We are planning two camps in
2005 -- at one of the facilities from last summer. Other camps could be
added if we have enough interest to do so.

New Shopping Cart
We installed a new shopping-cart system this week, and we're so excited
about all the new functions and features and BENEFITS FOR OUR CUSTOMERS,
that we wanted to offer you a few SPECIALS -- just to celebrate -- and just
in time for the holidays.

Quiero a mi entrenador
Hay cariño y amor alrededor de una piscina. A veces, un poco demasiado. No

Have a great week, and we'll be back next week with more info that should
make you want to Go Swim!

The 2004 Winter Training Camp is approaching. Questions - ask the
coaches.

GENERAL INFORMATION
You will be expected to attend as many practices as possible during
this three-week period. We will work on technique and conditioning.
Practices will flow better if you have attended previous practices.

Please inform the coaches if you cannot attend a practice session.

Each day, all swimmers will need to have:
A great attitude
Competitive style swim-wear
Sports drink or water
Dryland gear (shoes, socks, shirt, shorts)
Swim practice gear (available at the Foster 25m pool)

When we move from the Foster to Kubasaki, swimmers will be asked to
take a pair of short flippers, hand paddles, and a kickboard with
them, and are expected to have that gear at practice each day at
Kubasaki.

The 2004 Winter Training Camp is approaching. Questions - ask the
coaches.

GENERAL INFORMATION
You will be expected to attend as many practices as possible during
this three-week period. We will work on technique and conditioning.
Practices will flow better if you have attended previous practices.

Please inform the coaches if you cannot attend a practice session.

Each day, all swimmers will need to have:
A great attitude
Competitive style swim-wear
Sports drink or water
Dryland gear (shoes, socks, shirt, shorts)
Swim practice gear (available at the Foster 25m pool)

When we move from the Foster to Kubasaki, swimmers will be asked to
take a pair of short flippers, hand paddles, and a kickboard with
them, and are expected to have that gear at practice each day at
Kubasaki.

Freestyle Check Points:

Above the water - Exit to the Entry:

*Exit the water by lifting the elbow/arm just past the top of hip.

*Straighten the arm and keep it straight during the recovery.

*Once the hand has exited the water, lead with the back of the hand,
thumb side down.

*Rotate the arm from thumb down to thumb forward as the hand moves
forward towards the entry.

*Enter the water with a straight arm and flat to slightly pinky down
orientation.

Under the water - Catch to the Finish:

*After a slight delay and gliding or stretching action the hand
begins to move.

*The hand flexes at the wrist and begins to catch the water.

*The hand moves towards the bottom of the pool while the elbow
maintains a fairly high, closer to the surface, traditional position.

*Imagine a line beginning at the tip of the middle finger and
extending up the hand and arm, exiting at the elbow - that line moves
through a plane that is perpendicular to the bottom of the pool and
parallel to the direction of movement.

*The swimmer's shoulders must roll from pulling arm side "high" to
pulling arm side "low" as the action progresses.

*The swimmers are moving their shoulders more (more degrees of
rotation) when compared to their hips - more twist in the trunk or
more difference in degree of rotation when compared to some other
stroke theories.

*The straight pull pattern continues through the stroke, with a
change in shoulder roll and degree of bend at the wrist and elbow
changing to keep the elbow to fingertip line within the proper pull
plane.

*The swimmer releases the water - stops trying to push it - when the
hand reaches the top of the hip.

*Begin to lift the arm and hand out by raising the elbow and then
straightening the arm - not a "full push to the end of the stroke" in
the traditional way of thinking.

Article: Gaining the Competitive Edge Through Stroke Rate Training
By Andrew Holmes

Swim coaches continue to explore options for getting the most out of their
squads
and shaving hundredths of seconds off race times. Part of the coach?s
arsenal is
a stopwatch and invoking ?muscle memory? of a winning pace. By looking at
the fundamentals of stroke rate training, an Australian technology company
has come
up with a new essential item for the sports bag.

What is Stroke Rate Training?
Stroke rate training puts emphasis on
maintaining a consistent movement
pattern through the water. As stroke
efficiency improves, a given stroke rate
results in a reduced stroke count.
Training swimmers to have control over
both stroke rate and stroke count
throughout a race can result in
significant performance improvements.

The swimmer can use different stroke
rates at different stages of a race to
produce improved results. The ?best?
stroke rate varies depending on the
individual swimmer, the stroke, and the
race situation. To be able to swim at a
set stroke rate, swimmers need to train
at that rate.

Does it Work?
This emphasis of holding the stroke
count but improving efficiency was
instrumental to the Russian (Unified
Team) gold in the 200m freestyle relay at
the Barcelona Olympics. USA
Swimming?s ?Race Analysis? was first
employed at the US Open in 1999 and
includes breakout time, turn time, plus
stroke rate and distance per cycle. These
measures are also key elements in the
biomechanical analysis performed by the
Australian Institute of Sport.

Squads around the globe have used
stroke rate training as an essential
ingredient of elite swimming programs.

A Stopwatch Solution?
The basic principle can be realised with
a coach and a stopwatch. The swimmer
counts strokes, and the coach checks the
stroke rate on a stopwatch. This gives
the coach a snapshot of the stroke rate.
When the swimmer stops the coach can
pass on any adjustments that need to be
made.

The stopwatch approach implies trial
and error. A method that provides
positive feedback while the swimmer is
in motion would produce better results
sooner. The trial and error nature of the
stopwatch method is even less practical
when dealing with a squad of swimmers.

Science to the Rescue
In the past few years electronics have
been introduced to help the swimmer
and coach achieve proper pacing. Small
wearable devices can prompt the
swimmer to take the next stroke, thus
giving individualised instruction and
freeing up the coach to oversee the
whole team.

Providing a pacing device to each
swimmer is on the right track, but early
implementations had a few problems.
The manufacturers hadn?t fully thought
through the decidedly electronicsunfriendly
environment of a chlorinated
pool. Corrosion through seals around
buttons and displays, or opening the
battery compartment brought an abrupt
end to this approach.

Less is More
An Australian company has revisited the
problem. The Wetronome is a small
(35m x 55mm) device that is attached to
goggles or tucked under the swim cap.
Unlike its competitors, it has no display,
buttons, or even a way to get at the
battery, since it is designed for years of
operation.

Waving a magnet at the device enters
the stroke rate. A simple programming
sequence means the swimmer can even
change rates while still wearing the
device. The Wetronome does one
thing, simply and reliably, leaving the
swimmer and coach free to concentrate
on improved technique.

For More Information
The Wetronome website at
www.wetronome.com describes the
product further and also provides a
number of valuable links to articles and
sites on biomechanics and swimming
training.

Kamrau Out-Touches Van Dijk to Take Women's 25K at FINA Open Water World Champs
Dubai, United Arab Emirates. When Gary Hall, Jr., took the Olympic 50 meter
freestyle in Athens last summer, he won in a photo finish by a mere
one-hundredth of a second.

Now imagine swimming 25,000 meters -- that's 500 times the distance Gary and his
competitors swam -- and, at the end, it all comes down, once again,
to the touch.

I'm wondering if there are parents out there willing help run a concession
stand this Saturday? We'd need items donated (hot choco, donuts, drinks,
bagels, etc.) but also people willing to stand at the table and take money.
This would be a fund-raiser for the team -- to go to JOs and such. Please
reply back to curteemitz @ yahoo.com and let me know how you could help. We've
got a fews days to prepare!

Thank you,
Mitzi Carlin
