I'll be participating in a 2-day 200 mile cycling event - The Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting The Princess Margaret, one of the top 5 cancer research hospitals in the world.
I'll be cycling from Toronto to Niagara Falls with thousands of other Riders with all proceeds going to the Princess Margaret to support cancer research, treatment, and services. The Princess Margaret is Canada's leading comprehensive institution devoted to cancer research and care, and the work they're doing is leading-edge.
I've agreed to raise at least $2,500. Could you please consider making a donation to this worthy cause? Use the link at the bottom of this email to go visit my webpage, and please take the time to support me.
According to the National Cancer Institute of Canada, over 153,100 new cases of cancer and 70,400 deaths from cancer were estimated to occur in 2006. Men outnumber women for new cases by 5% and mortality by 11%. That's why I'm riding. To do something positive and put an end to the devastation cancer causes. I hope that you'll share this incredible adventure with me by supporting me in my fundraising efforts.

Hi Rob, here's where we are going ...feel free to invite others...wind out of the east...and the ride is flat
I will be starting a ride at 1:30 PM today (Thursday) and tomorrow (Friday) from the corner of Walker's Line and No. 1 Side Road in Burlington. (1st intersection north of the Walker's Line / 407 overpass)
2 hour ride
about 60 km (I will head up Walker's to Brittania, over to Millborough, down to 4th Concession over to Millgrove, out past Middletown road, turn around and come back)
flat route once you get up Brittania to Millborough
easy pace (about 28 average - low to mid 30's on the flats)
easy exertion (about level 2 on scale of perceived rate of exertion - easy to talk, but can't whistle)
Just show up at the corner, no need to email me
- you can park on the north east corner, or park at Longo's Plaza (Walker's and Dundas) and ride your bike to the intersection - I will wait until 1:35 before going on
This from the NY Times. As you know, brittle bones affect older people, but even younger cyclists can develop fragile/brittle bones. So if you are an older cyclist who puts on many many kilometers, you need to go to the link above. For others, a summary follows as it pertains to cycling:
"In one small study
completed by Dr. Barry and his colleagues, competitive cyclists lost
bone density over the course of a long training season. Dr. Barry says
that it’s possible, but not yet proved, that exercise that is too
prolonged or intense may lead to excessive calcium loss through sweat.
The body’s endocrine system may interpret this loss of calcium as
serious enough to warrant leaching the mineral from bone. Dr. Barry is
in the middle of a long-term study to determine whether supplementing
with calcium-fortified chews before and after exercise reduces the
bone-thinning response in competitive cyclists. He expects results in a
year or so."
The best way to build bone mass is to jump up and down - which also helps in balance - so you never get to test the 'fragile bone syndrome' - so skipping would be great, even if just for a few minutes, to help build your bone mass
