Hi All,

Many of you met Colin at the AGM. He has been going to Spain for the past 4 years or so and having a great time getting his legs under him so he is ready for the upcoming year. He has made this trip information available to the Oakville Club.

Take a look at what the group is offering
Note that this is not an Oakville Club organized excursion, but it is organized by a group in Spain that has been doing this trip for over 25 years, so you will be in very good hands!

The trips can be 1, 2 or 3 weeks
There are many links to click on
If you have any questions that are not answered by the links, let Colin know and CC me please
   - we will hold the questions for about a week and then send off replies to the group as a whole

This info will be posted on the website

FYI when Colin says 'guys like us' he is referring to people who love to ride, not necessarily racers  :)

Hi Rob,
maybe you can post this for the general membership...not just aimed at the younger racers but also guys like us... 4 differnt groups...racers and hard riders...hard riders but less so than group 1 ....Group 3 waits for everyone and includes many Kodak moments group 4 walks and have many other trips other than cycling...
However, whatever your outlook on cycling is, this holiday will suit all participants and you will come back with great memories ...
Colin

Here's some info on the trip that I take each April to Majorca.
it is really a wonderful trip, with terrific company
and I'm sure its the fact that we (Steve Leathley and myself and also Quinn for the first time) have such a good time that we want to repeat the experience... 5times for me and 4 for Steve
This is the only holiday in recent years that I have and still get excited about

Air fare not included, but Breakfast and Dinner are. Food is varied, recognizable, and plentiful...lunch is usually purchased on the road at one of the village/town squares during the ride
One week trips are also available as are any number of days during the 3 weeks that the camp is on
Bikes are kept with you inside the apartment
Apartments are air conditioned ...the Kitchen has a Fridge, stove, Microwave, pots, pans etc. Separate bedroom, separate bathroom with a decent size tub in it so you can soak away the aches and pains after a good ride
The dates  for the camp are  April 10 - May 1ST... any amount of days/weeks or all of the 3weeks depending on what you want to do. However the main 2 weeks start April 17th
Airfare is about $1200 cad return  Palma  Mallorca (PMI)
The organiser is Trevor Maddern
The cost of the holiday for 2 weeks is approx.$2400....... 1200 Airfare + 1200 for single person per apartment ( approx $930 pp if two share) and includes 2 meals daily Ground transfer from Palma to Puerto Pollensa $115  (75 euros taxi )...+ plus whatever spend money you may want to take
They are taking bookings now  100 pounds....balance due at the end of March...you likely have another few weeks to make your mind up, but the camp has filled early in previous years...and we occupy the whole hotel...don't leave booking too late if you decide to go
I hope to be there from April 1 (depart March 31) -  returning May1
Any way give it some thought..a great way to get fit for the season and a good holiday as well
The above is just me rambling on...see below ...Details in red font

Regards
Colin

Here are the details you have all been waiting for!

CicloSol Cycling Holidays

We can advise and arrange your cycling holiday in Majorca.

We have over 25 years experience and can make your holiday arrangements very simple.

You can choose half board hotel rooms and apartments, self catering hotels and apartments to houses and fincas.
We can also advise on affordable but safe and secure car hire, or we can transfer you to and from the airport.

Bike hire can be arranged if required; from simple bikes to full carbon racing bikes and even tandems.

You can be provided with route sheets or even guided tours if required.

To discuss your requirements please contact us [1].

2010 Holidays can be arranged anytime from 01 January 2010 until 01 May 2010 for your group

Excellent prices have been agreed for 2010 and transfers are very competitive.

If your group normally go to Majorca or wish to try this perfect cycling area, then give us a call, on 020 8500 1792
or email us at; pollensa2010 [at] ciclosuno [dot] com.
We can arrange cheap holidays for groups of all sizes.

How we do this is that you book your own flights. The earlier you book, the cheaper the flights generally are.
Transfers can be suggested or arranged for you and your party.

The Ciclos Uno Feburary training camp commences 30th January 2010 for 2 weeks.

This will be based in the excellent Pollensa Park Hotel [2] in Puerto Pollensa, Majorca.

There are rides for all abilities, from Elite riders to our very popular touring group.
There is also a retail therapy walking group for the non-cycling ladies.

Of special interest, the Pro Tour of Mallorca normally takes place during these first two weeks.

Please download a booking form [3], complete it in full and send it to Ciclos Uno [1].

If you need to know more, please call Trevor on 020 8500 1792 or send an email to February2010 [at] ciclosuno [dot] com

The second official training camp is 14th to 21st March 2010 for Triathlon competitors
This is more intense than our normal training camps as it includes structured triathlon training from top coaches.

For details of this and booking details please see www.rgactive.com [4]

The third camp is the very popular CicloSol holiday which has taken place during the last two weeks of April

for the past 27 years. Early booking is essential as we have riders from all over the world.
The venue as always is the Hobby Club apartments [2] here we have use of the apartments, so lots more room.
Your bike can stay with you on your balcony and we have our own reception and bar open 24 hours a day during our stay.
As we fill the whole complex it becomes 2 weeks of pure cycling, you live and train like a pro.

As with all our holidays we cater for all abilities from Pros to our Touring group.
The evenings are taken up with quizzes, talks and Beetle Drives - even Bingo! All with excellent prizes.
You may scoff but in 2009 the Bingo prize was 80 euros for full house and was soon very popular.

The holiday is half board again and meals are taken in the Pollensa Park hotel, which is just a short walk away.

2010 Dates are the 17th April 2010 until 01 May 2010

However, if you wish to extend your holiday for a third week as a number of us did last year then you can arrive on the 10th April 2010.

Please download a booking form [5], complete it in full and send it to Ciclos Uno [1]

If you are unsure of anything or wish to find out more, please call Trevor @ Ciclos Uno

You know me as the secretary and membership chair for the Oakville Cycling Club but as a sideline I am also the owner of Tailwind Touring, a company that offers bike tours in Europe and North America for cyclists in the 45+ age group. I am writing you with a special offer that I hope will be of interest to you.

In early June of 2010 I'm planning a bike tour down the Romantic Road in Germany between Würzburg and Füssen, a total of 425 km over 11 days.  What is the offer?  I am making this trip available to OCC members at cost, i.e. all participants, including me, share all costs equally.  Why am I doing this?  This is a new trip and before I offer any trip to the public, I research it by riding the tour and checking out facilities, sightseeing opportunities, etc. before deciding to offer it as bike tour.  Since it is more fun to ride with others, I am inviting you to come along.

We will start in Würzburg on May 31 and arrive in Füssen June 10 and will average about 50 km of cycling per day. We will stay at B&B's or small hotels along the way and also have a support van to take care of the luggage. I estimate the cost to be about between $2,000 -  $2,500 per person, double occupancy, including meals, but excluding air fare and train fare between the airport and starting and ending locations. The Romantic Road for the most part follows a bike path, has some rolling hills and offers some spectacular scenery with outstanding historical towns along the way.  And of course, there will be lots of opportunity to sample the local food and drink and the German gemütlichkeit. For more information about the Romantic Road, click here.

If any of you are interested, please contact me as soon as possible. I can then go over the itinerary with you and answer any questions you might have.

Regards

Last night we held our end-of-year celebration and annual general meeting.  The event was well attended and we had interesting talk from Eleanor McMahon from Share the Road about the work of her organization to make our roads safer for cyclists. President:                           Rob Narejko

Treasurer:                           Joe Marangi

Secretary:                           Bent Fink-Jensen

  • Road and TT Chair
  • MTB Chair
  • Recreation Road Chair
  • Membership
  • Clothing
  • Public Relations

Hello Fellow Cyclists!

I'll be participating in a 2-day 200 mile cycling event -  The Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting The Princess Margaret, one of the top 5 cancer research hospitals in the world.

I'll be cycling from Toronto to Niagara Falls  with thousands of other Riders with all  proceeds going to the Princess Margaret to support cancer research, treatment, and services. The Princess Margaret is Canada's leading comprehensive institution devoted to cancer research and care, and the work they're doing is leading-edge.

I've agreed to raise at least $2,500. Could you please consider making a donation to this worthy cause?  Use the link at the bottom of this email to go visit my webpage, and please take the time to support me.

According to the National Cancer Institute of Canada, over 153,100 new cases of cancer and 70,400 deaths from cancer were estimated to occur in 2006. Men outnumber women for new cases by 5% and mortality by 11%. That's why I'm riding. To do something positive and put an end to the devastation cancer causes. I hope that you'll share this incredible adventure with me by supporting me in my fundraising efforts.

Thank you in advance for your generosity!

Sincerely,
Patricia Lamont

This is a final reminder of the upcoming year-end party, an event not to be missed.

As mentioned in my previous note, we will also be electing the new executive for the upcoming season. To make this process simpler we have decided to elect only the positions required by our constitution.  They are: President, Treasurer and Secretary.  The remainder of the roles will be filled by members who are willing to volunteer and take on the responsibilities that go with the position.  So if you are interested in any of the three positions listed above, please let me know before the meeting.  If you are interested in any of the other positions listed below, please let the new executive know.

FYI.......Bent

As cycling enthusiasts  I am sure your club members are interested in knowing about any new cycling oriented  products that have come on the market as soon  as they are available and so I am emailing you now, being the clubs contact person, for this very reason.

I wish to introduce to your club members “BikePoncho”

BikePoncho is a brand new product ideal for all cyclists whether they be competitive cyclists, mountain bikers, weekend warriors, students or commuters.  To put it simply, everyone who owns a bike!

BikePoncho is a hip, two-tone waterproof, oil resistant, UV protective, aerodynamic, washable semi fitted bike cover available in many colours that can be  personalised  to sport your club logo or an individuals name.

BikePoncho helps to protect your bike against the elements, preserving paintwork, preventing rusting of  the chain, drive train  & other vulnerable bike parts & to help deter theft of your most prized possession.

Competitive cyclists, Cyclocross,or Mt bikers - BikePoncho will protect your bike in transportation to & from an event when carried on the outside of your vehicle & keep the interior of your vehicle clean if you should carry it within.  Your bike too will be instantly recognisable amongst the throngs of bikes should you have need to rack it overnight before a race!

Commuter or Student -  BikePoncho will keep your bike clean & dry and ready to ride as soon as you leave work or school.  No more wet seats & sticky handlebar grips on your ride home. Your bike is ready to go when you are.  BikePoncho sports  large grommets on each wheel panel to feed your lock through for added security.

No garage? Do you need to store your bike on the balcony or in the yard? - BikePoncho keeps your bike free of the ravages of rain, snow, sun, sand, salt, sleet, dust & dirt.  Bike Poncho will increase the life span of your bike & reduce the need for maintenance of rusted chains, sticking derailleurs, or peeling paint caused by your bike being open to the elements 24/7 !!

It would be most appreciated if you would please share this information with your club members and refer them to http://bikeponcho.com/ for more details of our new product.

I have samples available that I will be very happy to show to all interested parties so please call Barb on  289 337 8928 (Home#) or  905 330 3225(Cell#) or email :  barb@...

Hi All,

Let me know if you need any more cycling clothes.
  • We receive compliments all the time on the design of the Club Jersey.

  • The jackets are awesome.
We will be taking orders at the AGM next Saturday, at The King's Arms in Oakville, or you can email me what you want.

We do need a cheque payable for the full amount payable to the Oakville Cycling Club

    • same design as the jerseys, but with long sleeve
    • MSRP on these is $250

Hi All,

  • 2 hour ride
  • about 60 km (I will head up Walker's to Brittania, over to Millborough, down to 4th Concession over to Millgrove, out past Middletown road, turn around and come back)
    • flat route once you get up Brittania to Millborough

Just show up at the corner, no need to email me
- you can park on the north east corner, or park at Longo's Plaza (Walker's and Dundas) and ride your bike to the intersection
- I will wait until 1:35 before going on

Hi All,

This from the NY Times. As you know, brittle bones affect older people, but even younger cyclists can develop fragile/brittle bones. So if you are an older cyclist who puts on many many kilometers, you need to go to the link above. For others, a summary follows as it pertains to cycling:

"In one small study completed by Dr. Barry and his colleagues, competitive cyclists lost bone density over the course of a long training season. Dr. Barry says that it’s possible, but not yet proved, that exercise that is too prolonged or intense may lead to excessive calcium loss through sweat. The body’s endocrine system may interpret this loss of calcium as serious enough to warrant leaching the mineral from bone. Dr. Barry is in the middle of a long-term study to determine whether supplementing with calcium-fortified chews before and after exercise reduces the bone-thinning response in competitive cyclists. He expects results in a year or so."

The best way to build bone mass is to jump up and down - which also helps in balance - so you never get to test the 'fragile bone syndrome'
- so skipping would be great, even if just for a few minutes, to help build your bone mass

Hi All,

1. Regarding your OCA insurance:
  • Any group rides that you participate in that are not organized and lead by an OCC member, or are sanctioned by the Ontario Cycling Association (OCA), YOU DO NOT HAVE OCA INSURANCE COVERAGE.
We know of a person, who is not an OCC member, who has been organizing rides with OCC members. You are most definitely welcome to ride where ever, and with who ever you choose to ride with. Keep in mind that these rides are not recognized by the OCC or the OCA and as such, we (the Oakville CYcling Club) have no liability or responsibility for anything that happens on these rides.

If you, as a member of the OCC, wish to organize a ride that you want recognized by the OCC (and hence the OCA and have insurance coverage), you need to submit a request in writing / email to the current Club President. If you do not receive a response by the time your ride is scheduled to proceed, you do not have coverage.

Generally, rides are set up at the start of the year by the Group Ride Leaders (Brisk pace and Easy pace) and are listed on the website. Ad hoc rides are usually organized by the Club executive or the appointed ride leader and as such, are covered implicitly.

2. Regarding guests:

Ride leaders are required to have guests who are without OCA insurance sign a waiver of liability. If you need these forms, please contact a member of the executive or one of the ride leaders listed on the web site
(Bent or Claudiu).

Guests can 'try' riding with the Club for a maximum of 2 rides (the need to sign the waiver both times). After that, they need to join the Club as they are benefiting from our knowledge and organizational structure.

3. Risk and liability

Liability is a concern that we all need to keep our eyes open for. If someone is riding in an unsafe manner, or has an unsafe bike, let your ride leader know so that the issue can be addressed. Ignoring the issue puts your whole group, and other users of the road or trail, at risk for an accident.  Road rash is painful, so is dropping over an embankment.

If an issue with an unsafe rider persists, the rider will have their membership revoked.

Ride safe and ride smart!

A program that many of you help with each year.

hello everyone - I'm doing a bit of a "thinning out" of some of my bikes. For sale is a very well maintained road bike.

for sale, 54cm Pinarello OPERA bike with:
-lightweight steel
-carbon "aria" fork
-carbon rear vertical triangle

9speed mixed campy components:
-daytona front/rear derailleurs
-record BB
-chorus Ergo Shifters

includes 3 sets of wheels!
set 1: mavic open 4 clinchers (32sp)
set 2: campy zonda (old style) clinchers
set 3: ambrosio 32sp clinchers

everything well taken care of and in very good condition.
If you've already got a carbon everything bike, this will be that perfect second bike that you can take everywhere. If you don't have a decent road bike, this one will get you going - its light and nimble. a great climber and well as super comfortable on a group ride.

I've got the above listed on craigslist/Kijiji for $1,825.
here's the link so you can see some images:

http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-sports-bikes-54cm-Pinarello-opera-bike-W0QQAdIdZ167716084

For OCC members I'm offering all of the above for $1,650. let me know if you are interested, and we can take it from there.

Folks,

If anyone has any preferences and/or experiences with fitters in the region
they'd care to share, I'd appreciate it.

Specifically looking for shops with tri- or TT fit expertise.
Musculo-skeletally(?!) I am pretty asymmetrical, so I'm
expecting to pay for a more in-depth session.

I've heard good things about Scott at Gears in Mississauga, and Ian at Younique
in Milton. Any others I should consider?

Many thanks,

Hi Joe,

My name is Gord Litster and I am a member of the Sidney Velos (a Victoria, BC masters road bike club) and have a terrific offer for your club members. In 2010, my wife Anita and I are hosting 3 bike tours in the hidden jewel of Italy, the province of Abruzzo. Our itineraries extend from the stunning Apennine Mountains in the west to the beautiful Adriatic Beaches in the east. These tours are designed to give the cyclist some great riding on country roads with few cars while taking in some spectacular scenery .

Your home base is Valle San Giovanni, a village with a population of about 400. Olive groves, vineyards, sunflowers and picturesque hills of patchwork crops surround the village, typical of old Italy. Bread arrives daily and fish is delivered on Thursday. Amenities include a small grocery (great deli), fruit and vegetable store, post office, hardware store, hairdresser and Italian style bar. Daily life is evident and interactions with the locals are unavoidable. Beautiful countryside and friendly locals await you. This is a genuine Italian experience!

Tour #1, 11 Days, May 24 to June 3 $1775( $1595 if contacted by Dec. 1/09 booked by 15th)   From the Appenines to the Adriatic
This is our easiest itinerary, with reduced hills and mileage.  The mileage averages about 65 KM per day with one full rest day and a very light beach day. The tour is perfect for couples of different abilities. This itinerary we have done every year, except we have tweeked the routes to make them better and better.  You really get to experience the diversity and beauty of the area. (3 nights are spent outside the village, 2 at a winery and one at agricoturismo overlooking the Adriatic).

Tour #2, 8 Days , June 7 to June 14 $1200 ($1095  if booked by Dec. 15/09)  The Best of the Hub and Spoke
This tour is perfect for cyclists looking for a short 8 day itinerary. I have included 6 terrific hub and spoke routes and acouple of local spins on day 1 and day 8. No packing or unpacking just great riding. The mileage ranges from 65km to120 km. The cyclists will be able ride at their own pace. Regroups as required.

Tour #3, 11 Days, Roadies Tour, June 18 to June 28 $1675 ($1495 if booked by Dec. 15/09)    The Wild Boar Tour
This is our up tempo itinerary designed for the rider comfortable riding in a group at a brisk pace.  The diversified countryside of Abruzzo includes all types of terrain, great climbs with  spectacular scenery, long thrilling descents and flat river valleys for some brisk pace-line riding. Mileage ranges from 65 to148km per day with one full rest day and a very light beach day.  I have added the last 2 Sundays of June to this itinerary so we may partake in one of the local races (Gran Fondo 148km last year or the Medio Fondo 100km) that usually take place then.  Also one night is spent at a small family winery.

All accomodation and some meals are included in all tours, details are in the itineraries.  The accomodation is not hotel rooms but renovated village houses with everything you need.

Some of the additional activities we can include or can arrange for interested folks are cooking lessons, hikes, shopping trips, wine tasting, a trip to the local olive oil press and museum tours. All tours have a support vehicle, driven by Anita my wife who speaks fluent Italian and is from this village.  She is also a practising Register Nurse.  We have been sending clients to this area for over 10 years.

Why, our tours?

- We can give you a great vacation by giving you both great cycling and a taste of genuine Italy.

- We willingly share all our experience with you concerning vacationing in Italy, from flights to Rome, hotels etc.

- Our groups are small, usually 7 to 9 riders.

- Anita (local knowledge)knows the best places to eat and shop and can get us into places no one else can.

- Within the village you have instant credibility, you are a friend of Anita's.  The villagers have been extremely kind to our guests.

- The routes are magic....I am very proud of them.

- With a support vehicle you do not need to carry anymore than you would on a regular club ride.

- Cyclists have loved the fact that we are not packing up everyday.  Many have felt it was the best tour they have been on.

- Every year we have riders returning to do it again.

- We have a bike shop available for those who want to bring their own bike and quality rental bikes for those who prefer that option.

- Extra discount for 3 or more cyclists booking together

Please contact us directly at 250-655-4030 or email us at gordonlitster@... and we can email detailed itineraries,  photos, testimonials etc.

You are welcome to forward this on to any friends or family that might be interested.

Ciao Gord.
