Many of you met Colin at the AGM. He has been going to Spain for the past 4 years or so and having a great time getting his legs under him so he is ready for the upcoming year. He has made this trip information available to the Oakville Club.
Take a look at what the group is offering Note that this is not an Oakville Club organized excursion, but it is organized by a group in Spain that has been doing this trip for over 25 years, so you will be in very good hands!
The trips can be 1, 2 or 3 weeks There are many links to click on If you have any questions that are not answered by the links, let Colin know and CC me please - we will hold the questions for about a week and then send off replies to the group as a whole
This info will be posted on the website
FYI when Colin says 'guys like us' he is referring to people who love to ride, not necessarily racers :)

Hi Rob,
maybe you can post this for the general membership...not just aimed at the younger racers but also guys like us... 4 differnt groups...racers and hard riders...hard riders but less so than group 1 ....Group 3 waits for everyone and includes many Kodak moments group 4 walks and have many other trips other than cycling...
However, whatever your outlook on cycling is, this holiday will suit all participants and you will come back with great memories ...
Colin
Here's some info on the trip that I take each April to Majorca.
it is really a wonderful trip, with terrific company
and I'm sure its the fact that we (Steve Leathley and myself and also Quinn for the first time) have such a good time that we want to repeat the experience... 5times for me and 4 for Steve
This is the only holiday in recent years that I have and still get excited about
Air fare not included, but Breakfast and Dinner are. Food is varied, recognizable, and plentiful...lunch is usually purchased on the road at one of the village/town squares during the ride
One week trips are also available as are any number of days during the 3 weeks that the camp is on
Bikes are kept with you inside the apartment
Apartments are air conditioned ...the Kitchen has a Fridge, stove, Microwave, pots, pans etc. Separate bedroom, separate bathroom with a decent size tub in it so you can soak away the aches and pains after a good ride
The dates for the camp are April 10 - May 1ST... any amount of days/weeks or all of the 3weeks depending on what you want to do. However the main 2 weeks start April 17th
Airfare is about $1200 cad return Palma Mallorca (PMI)
The organiser is Trevor Maddern
The cost of the holiday for 2 weeks is approx.$2400....... 1200 Airfare + 1200 for single person per apartment ( approx $930 pp if two share) and includes 2 meals daily Ground transfer from Palma to Puerto Pollensa $115 (75 euros taxi )...+ plus whatever spend money you may want to take
They are taking bookings now 100 pounds....balance due at the end of March...you likely have another few weeks to make your mind up, but the camp has filled early in previous years...and we occupy the whole hotel...don't leave booking too late if you decide to go
I hope to be there from April 1 (depart March 31) - returning May1
Any way give it some thought..a great way to get fit for the season and a good holiday as well
The above is just me rambling on...see below ...Details in red font
Regards
Colin

Here are the details you have all been waiting for!
We can advise and arrange your cycling holiday in Majorca.
We have over 25 years experience and can make your holiday arrangements very simple.
You can choose half board hotel rooms and apartments, self catering hotels and apartments to houses and fincas. We can also advise on affordable but safe and secure car hire, or we can transfer you to and from the airport.
Bike hire can be arranged if required; from simple bikes to full carbon racing bikes and even tandems.
You can be provided with route sheets or even guided tours if required.
2010 Holidays can be arranged anytime from 01 January 2010 until 01 May 2010 for your group
Excellent prices have been agreed for 2010 and transfers are very competitive.
If your group normally go to Majorca or wish to try this perfect cycling area, then give us a call, on 020 8500 1792 or email us at; pollensa2010[at]ciclosuno [dot] com.
We can arrange cheap holidays for groups of all sizes.
How we do this is that you book your own flights. The earlier you book, the cheaper the flights generally are. Transfers can be suggested or arranged for you and your party.
The Ciclos Uno Feburary training campcommences 30th January 2010 for 2 weeks.
This will be based in the excellentPollensa Park Hotel[2] in Puerto Pollensa, Majorca.
There are rides for all abilities, from Elite riders to our very popular touring group. There is also a retail therapy walking group for the non-cycling ladies.
Of special interest, the Pro Tour of Mallorca normally takes place during these first two weeks.
If you need to know more, please call Trevor on 020 8500 1792 or send an email toFebruary2010[at]ciclosuno [dot] com
The second official training camp is 14th to 21st March 2010 for Triathlon competitors This is more intense than our normal training camps as it includes structured triathlon training from top coaches.
For details of this and booking details please seewww.rgactive.com[4]
The third camp is the very popularCicloSol holidaywhich has taken place during the last two weeks of April
for the past 27 years. Early booking is essential as we have riders from all over the world. The venue as always is theHobby Club apartments[2] here we have use of the apartments, so lots more room.
Your bike can stay with you on your balcony and we have our own reception and bar open 24 hours a day during our stay. As we fill the whole complex it becomes 2 weeks of pure cycling, you live and train like a pro.
As with all our holidays we cater for all abilities from Pros to our Touring group. The evenings are taken up with quizzes, talks and Beetle Drives - even Bingo! All with excellent prizes.
You may scoff but in 2009 the Bingo prize was 80 euros for full house and was soon very popular.
The holiday is half board again and meals are taken in the Pollensa Park hotel, which is just a short walk away.
2010 Dates are the 17th April 2010 until 01 May 2010

You know me as the secretary and membership chair for the
Oakville Cycling Club but as a sideline I am also the owner of Tailwind
Touring, a company that offers bike tours in Europe and North America for
cyclists in the 45+ age group. I am writing you with a special offer that I
hope will be of interest to you.
In early June of 2010 I'm planning a bike tour down the
Romantic Road in Germany between Würzburg and Füssen, a total of 425 km over 11
days. What is the offer? I am making this trip available to OCC
members at cost, i.e. all participants, including me, share all costs
equally. Why am I doing this? This is a new trip and before I offer
any trip to the public, I research it by riding the tour and checking out
facilities, sightseeing opportunities, etc. before deciding to offer it as bike
tour. Since it is more fun to ride with others, I am inviting you to come
along.
We will start in Würzburg on May 31 and arrive in Füssen
June 10 and will average about 50 km of cycling per day. We will stay at
B&B's or small hotels along the way and also have a support van to take
care of the luggage. I estimate the cost to be about between $2,000 -
$2,500 per person, double occupancy, including meals, but excluding air
fare and train fare between the airport and starting and ending locations. The
Romantic Road for the most part follows a bike path, has some rolling hills and offers some
spectacular scenery with outstanding historical towns along the way. And
of course, there will be lots of opportunity to sample the local food and drink
and the German gemütlichkeit. For more information about the Romantic Road, click here.
If any of you are interested, please contact me as soon as
possible. I can then go over the itinerary with you and answer any questions
you might have.

This from the NY Times. As you know, brittle bones affect older people, but even younger cyclists can develop fragile/brittle bones. So if you are an older cyclist who puts on many many kilometers, you need to go to the link above. For others, a summary follows as it pertains to cycling:
"In one small study
completed by Dr. Barry and his colleagues, competitive cyclists lost
bone density over the course of a long training season. Dr. Barry says
that it’s possible, but not yet proved, that exercise that is too
prolonged or intense may lead to excessive calcium loss through sweat.
The body’s endocrine system may interpret this loss of calcium as
serious enough to warrant leaching the mineral from bone. Dr. Barry is
in the middle of a long-term study to determine whether supplementing
with calcium-fortified chews before and after exercise reduces the
bone-thinning response in competitive cyclists. He expects results in a
year or so."
The best way to build bone mass is to jump up and down - which also helps in balance - so you never get to test the 'fragile bone syndrome' - so skipping would be great, even if just for a few minutes, to help build your bone mass
Any
group rides that you participate in that are not organized and lead by
an OCC member, or are sanctioned by the Ontario Cycling Association (OCA),
YOU DO NOT HAVE OCA INSURANCE COVERAGE.
We know of a person,
who is not an OCC member, who has been organizing rides with OCC
members. You are most definitely welcome to ride where ever, and with
who ever you choose to ride with. Keep in mind that these rides are not
recognized by the OCC or the OCAand as such,we (the Oakville CYcling Club) have no liability or
responsibility for anything that happens on these rides.
If
you, as a member of the OCC, wish to organize a ride that you want
recognized by the OCC (and hence the OCA and have insurance coverage),
you need to submit a request in writing / email to the current Club
President. If you do not receive a response by the time your ride is scheduled to proceed, you do not have coverage.
Generally, rides are set up at the start of the year by the Group Ride
Leaders (Brisk pace and Easy pace) and are listed on the website. Ad hoc rides are usually organized
by the Club executive or the appointed ride leader and as such, are
covered implicitly.
2. Regarding guests:
Ride
leaders are required to have guests who are without OCA insurance
sign a waiver of liability. If you need these forms, please contact a member of the executive or one of the ride leaders listed on the web site (Bent or Claudiu).
Guests can 'try' riding with the Club for a maximum of 2 rides (the need to sign the waiver both times). After that, they
need to join the Club as they are benefiting from our knowledge and
organizational structure.
3. Risk and liability
Liability is a concern that we all need to keep our eyes open for. If someone is riding in an unsafe manner, or has an unsafe bike, let your ride leader know so that the issue can be addressed. Ignoring the issue puts your whole group, and other users of the road or trail, at risk for an accident. Road rash is painful, so is dropping over an embankment.
If an issue with an unsafe rider persists, the rider will have their membership revoked.
Ride safe and ride smart!

Specifically looking for shops with tri- or TT fit expertise.

I've heard good things about Scott at Gears in Mississauga, and Ian at Younique

home base is Valle San Giovanni, a village with a population of about 400.
Olive groves, vineyards, sunflowers and picturesque hills of patchwork crops
surround the village, typical of old Italy. Bread arrives daily and fish is
delivered on Thursday. Amenities include a small grocery (great deli), fruit
and vegetable store, post office, hardware store, hairdresser and Italian style
bar. Daily life is evident and interactions with the locals are unavoidable.
Beautiful countryside and friendly locals await you. This is a genuine Italian
experience!
