The weather for tomorrow is a bit iffy with showers and  thunderstorms forecast. If the forecast is for severe weather, we will cancel the ride, so please check your email before leaving tomorrow morning.

We will start from Queenston Heights parking lot (where the Brock Monument is) at 9.30 am (we have a ferry to catch before 1 pm).  I expect that we will be done by 3 pm.

Attached is a map of the ride.  If anyone wants to car pool, please let me know

Do you have to be an OCC member for this ride?  If not, Mike and I do not have any plans that day and may be in!

Thanks,

If there is sufficient interest I would like to organize an all-day ride in Niagara on July 1.  The ride will be 75 km long starting from Queenston Heights, going down past the Falls on the Niagara Parkway, turn east and go across the Welland Canal by ferry and then follow the Welland Canal to Lock 3 where we turn toward Queenston again.  We will go at a fairly leisurely pace and will be a stop for coffee at Tim Horton’s by the Falls and stop lunch at Lock 3.

If you are interested, could you please let me know.  If there are enough of us we can also organize car pooling from Oakville.

Congrats David.   I bet it was a tough climb.   We should compare notes.   I will be there on July 25th doing the climb (from Bedoin) and watching the Tour De France crawl up as well.

I am praying for nice cool canadian air that day  ;-)

Cheers,

/David

Hi Jeff,

If the weather is good, the guys will probably be out at 9:00 at the Longo's location (Walker's Line and Dundas St in Burl)
- I won't be there
- you can also send a note tooakvillecyclingclub@yahoogroups.com to see if anyone will be riding from the Brisk Paced group
There is also a ride from CyclePath at 9:00 (I think that is the time)
 - this would not be killer ride in distance or speed, as there can be quite a few newbies in there
(ie < 90 km and pace 28 kph or less - in general)
- or from Neworld (on Plains Rd) at 9:00
  - this would be a long fast ride... (140 km + and pace > 30 kph - in general)

Good Afternoon,

I am unable to make this Saturday's ride and wanted to see if anyone is planning to ride on Sunday June 28th.

Time, flexible, but mid-morning would likely be best.

Let me know, thanks.

The Niagara Ride on July 1 is a go!

We will meet at 9.30 in the parking lot at Queenston Heights in Niagara (that’s where the Brock Monument is located).  If you plan to participate and haven’t let me know yet, please do so and also let me know if you would like to car pool.  Feel free to bring guests along as long as you know they can handle the distance. They will be asked to sign a waiver.

Hey Greg,

I know you're occupied this weekend, but I DID manage to fill my team soon after we corresponded via email.  However, one of my teammates had to bow out yesterday because of sudden health issues.  As a result, a spot has opened on our 5-man team.  Do you know of anyone who might be interested?  I've been sending the word out to people here in the club, in Waterloo, and have received quite a few "no's", and a couple of "maybes".   If you know of anyone, can you let me know?  Thanks...

Steve

Thanks...

Steve

Map of the Jarvis St. vote. Where does your Councillor stand? photo: Dave Meslin

Toronto’s downtown just became more bike-friendly, thanks to you

by, Yvonne Bambrick, Executive Director

It’s official: our collective efforts to include bikes in Toronto’s transportation plans are paying off! To kick off Bike Month in style, City Council voted 28-16 in favour of including two bike lanes in their plans for changes to Jarvis Street.

The victory came with a hard fight. Councillor Kyle Rae, Mayor David Miller, and the cycling community championed consideration of cycling traffic in the planned redesign of Jarvis Street.

Hundreds of helmeted cyclists showed up the day of the vote to lend support, and our strong presence made a tremendous impact. That day, every major newspaper in the city covered the issue and mentioned the Toronto Cyclists Union as a key player. Read more…

>Now over 700 members strong, your bike union has a powerful voice with which to influence public policy and make improvements for cyclists across the city. And we are getting stronger. From Scarborough to Mississauga, from downtown to uptown, your membership dollars are fuelling key changes that make our roads safer for cyclists, every single day.

>If you believe Toronto can be a world-class city that supports a range of sustainable transportation options, including cycling, please lend your voice to the Toronto Cyclists Union and Join or Renew as a member today!

Thanks again for your support. We couldn't do this without you.

Our first Annual General Meeting and 1 year Anniversary Celebration!!

by Karey Iron, Board President

Mark your calendars! On June 18, 2009, at 7:00pm, the Toronto Cyclists Union will hold its first Annual General Meeting at our office in the Centre for Social Innovation (CSI) - 215 Spadina Ave., Suite 120. During this meeting, we will review our financial standing over our first year and will ratify the expansion and enhancement of our board. The meeting agenda and list of board members can be viewed online. You will have the opportunity to meet volunteers who tirelessly contribute their time to bike union initiatives – from keeping the website up and running and keeping the communications up-to-date to organizing and managing special projects and events. You will meet the past and new members of the Board of Directors, our Executive Director, Yvonne Bambrick, and other members like you. You will hear about the bike union’s successes over the past year and you will have the opportunity to add your voice to the strategic thinking for the bike union as we move into our second year.

All members are encouraged to attend the AGM – our continued success rests on our critical mass and your vibrant voices.
*RSVP required for AGM - info@....

The meeting will be followed by a party at 8:00pm (also at CSI - in Suite 400) to celebrate our successes and our current members and to welcome future members. See event listings below for further details.

E-Bikes: What do bike union members think?

As the spokesperson for our organization, Executive Director Yvonne Bambrick has put forward a public position about the heavy scooter/moped-style e-bikes and wants to get your feedback to make sure this position accurately reflects the position of the majority of our members. Please take a moment to complete this mini-survey.

Our current position statement can be found here.

Thank you for your time and feedback on this issue. The results of the survey will inform our position moving forward.

Valet Bike Parking - new service from the Toronto Cyclists Union

by, Craig Barnes, Valet Bike Parking Coordinator

What do you do when you're expecting hundreds of cyclists at your event and there is not enough bicycle parking in sight? You call on the Toronto Cyclists Union Valet Bike Parking team. Valet bike parking works like a coat-check and is a service for cyclists that offers secure, hassle-free parking at events.

At the recent dandyhorse launch party, bike union staff and volunteers parked over 175 bikes. The response to this service was overwhelmingly positive: as cyclists rode up to drop off their bikes, they were heard saying "This is awesome", "This is such a treat", and "Valet parking makes me feel great for riding my bike."

Valet bike parking has been building momentum and popularity across North America and was a feature of the recent presidential inauguration in Washington, D.C. The Vancouver Folk Festival parks 3000 bicycles, and San Francisco offers valet bike parking at all San Francisco Giants home games. Toronto is so ready for this valet bike parking! Ask for it the next time you go to a festival or large sports event. Event organizers need to know that cyclists like you want this service.

Valet bike parking services were provided at the recent Bike Summit (May 28) and St. Lawrence Market Criterium bicycle race (May 29). Watch for valet bike parking at the upcoming Toronto Cyclists Union AGM and party (June 18)

Cycling Outreach Campaign Launch: Cycling is affordable, healthy, and convenient

Over the past year, volunteers at the Toronto Cyclists Union have been working in partnership with staff at CultureLink to secure funds and prepare a cycling outreach campaign for newcomers. Culturelink's Ajith Aluthwatta, one of the core volunteer team members, firmly believes that cycling is affordable, healthy, and convenient. He's been riding his bike for about 20 years, ever since arriving in Toronto. Ajith has thought for many years about how to promote cycling amongst newcomers, and when he heard about the Toronto Cyclists Union, he knew the time was right. He has been involved since the inception of the bike union, helping to make this happen.

On April 29th, the Cycling: From back home to our new home campaign had its first major milestone - hiring its first staff member. Cycling Outreach Coordinator Leehe Lev comes to the project with diverse skills, a life-long love of cycling, and a great deal of enthusiasm. Leehe has experience working at a shelter serving refugees, where she became familiar with how sustainable living habits are sometimes forgotten as newcomers assimilate in Toronto. "I came to Canada when I was two years old, and my earliest memories of bicycling were with other new Canadians my family connected with. Bicycling was very much a part of my parents' lives in the countries where they grew up. As much as my parents loved cycling and understood the importance of it in terms of health and the environment, owning a car was still something they they strived for. Part of the 'North American dream' includes owning a car. In my new position, I'd like to help change that myth." When Leehe is not working on cycling issues, she keeps busy by running her own company, Whole Self Fitness, and working on several art projects.

We're thrilled to have Leehe on board and we look forward to sharing the developments of this project with you. Please join us as we officially launch the campaign at the CultureLink offices on June 17th (details in events listing below).

Happy Anniversary - Pee-wee Herman Picture Show video now online!

Bike Summit 2009 - what a great day! Update from TCAT's Nancy Smith Lea

The second annual Bike Summit on May 28th, 2009 was a great success. Again this year, despite a bigger venue, this one-day bicycle policy conference sold out in advance.

About 220 registrants representing government, the private sector, non-profit organizations and the general public were in attendance. The purpose of the day was to share best practices and challenges in implementing bicycle policy, research, technical designs, and advocacy campaigns.

We have received very positive feedback on the overall event, our lineup of speakers, and the networking opportunities. We will be posting the speakers' presentations online soon and will also publish proceedings from the Summit in the coming months. Podcast interviews with eight of the 23 speakers produced by New Social Media are now available on-line: Eric Anderson, Joshua Benson, Ralph Buehler, Adolfo Hernandez, Megan Jamieson, Kevin Krizek, Martijn J. te Lintelo, and Dave Meslin.

Thanks to all of our sponsors who made the day possible, to our speakers for providing engaging presentations and ideas, and our attendees for participating.

Summit photos by Toronto Cyclists Union Executive Director Yvonne Bambrick can be viewed here.

Ward 29 Community Meeting for those who cycle (and those who’d like to)

Ward 29 Bikes invites all interested cyclists to join us on June 17, 2009 to share information and ideas about cycling in and around Ward 29 (Toronto-Danforth). We're hosting a public meeting at the East York Community Centre with the participation of the City of Toronto, the Toronto Cyclists Union, and other community groups. We're looking for input and want you to help shape the future of cycling in our neighbourhood. Local cyclists and city staff will be on hand to discuss cycling in Ward 29 and successful cycling advocates will share their stories. Please join us on June 17 if you're interested in improving the cycling realm in our community. Contact us at info@... for more information.

What: Ward 29 Community Meeting for those who cycle (and those who’d like to)
When: Wednesday, June 17, 2009. Open House at 6:30 p.m., meeting starts at 7:00 p.m.
Where: East York Community Centre (1081 Pape Avenue at Torrens, between O'Connor and Cosburn).
Who: City of Toronto staff, local cyclists, cycling advocates, and you!
Why: Because we want your input and we want you to get involved in cycling activities in our community.

About us: Ward 29 Bikes formed as the local advocacy group for Ward 29 following the Toronto Cyclists Union's Advocacy Workshop last spring. Our goal is to promote all forms of cycling within and around our neighbourhood by encouraging people to bike to work, to school, to shop, and to play. We believe that cycling is a convenient and practical mode of transportation, as well as being just plain fun. Some of our activities to date have included authoring a report about cycling safety on the Bloor Viaduct, running a bicycling information night at Diefenbaker Public School, engaging Ward 29 Councillor Case Ootes, and supporting projects and advocacy in adjoining wards.

Bells on Bloor Ride

Written by Albert Koehl, Bells On Bloor Coordinator

The bells were again happily ringing along Bloor Street on Sunday, May 31st when the Bells on Bloor ride took over the road. The estimated 2 000 participants - along with a friendly police escort - were part of Toronto's biggest-ever cycling advocacy parade. This year's parade, again sponsored by Take the Tooker, Curbside Bikes, and the Toronto Cyclists Union, featured prizes for best costumes and free bells donated by Sweet Pete's and the Bike Joint. A video of the event can be viewed here.

The parade made a big impression on onlookers along Bloor St. and inspired many hoots of support. Unfortunately, this throng of cyclists has not yet convinced city councillors that Bloor St. needs a bike lane to keep cyclists safe. On May 25, 2009, just prior to a scheduled discussion of the issue, the City quietly pre-empted the publication of a feasibility study of a Bloor-Danforth bikeway that had been ordered in October 2007. The issue of a bikeway on Bloor-Danforth will now be studied anew by an outside consultant - 17 years after a consultant first identified Bloor-Danforth as the preferred east-west cycling route.

Fundraiser for Chris Kasztelewicz - For the Love of Cycling

On May 23rd, the cycling community came together to party in support of Chris Kasztelewicz, the cyclist who was severely injured in a road rage incident involving a hit and run by a taxi driver in November of last year. The Toronto Free Gallery hosted 150 cyclists, two amazing DJ's, and an incredible video-enhanced GoldSprints roller race for a fun night celebrating The Love of Cycling. Chris was not able to attend due to his ongoing recovery, but his lawyer David Levy stopped in to raise a glass and say a few words about his client, and his appreciation of the strength of the cycling community. We raised $1800 for Chris, but more importantly, we showed him that hundreds of fellow cyclists are behind him and wishing him well. Big thanks to all the event sponsors who donated items for the raffle: Amsterdam Brewery, The Bike Joint, Cervélo, Duke's Cycle, GoldSprints by Navid, Janet Bike Girl, La Palette, Mountain Equipment Co-op, Push the Envelope, Steel Wool Bicycles, Toronto Cyclists Union, Toronto Free Gallery, and Urbane Cyclist. Thanks to all the folks who came out in support of Chris, and who worked hard to make the party come together so nicely! Photos of the party can be viewed here.

Bike Month kick-off Cruiser Ride - update photos

About 45 cyclists joined us for our cruiser ride to the Leslie Spit on Saturday, May 30 - and what a ride! We began our outing with a tour of the new bike station now open at Union Station, and then hit the road southbound on York from Bremner. Just our luck, there were giant pylons set up for construction work, so we had a nice open lane to gather in before heading off on the green light. The weather was fantastic, but turned a bit on us as we were approaching the ferry docks, so only about a third of our group ended up heading over to the island for the Bikes Without Borders event. Good times were had by all participants - thanks for coming out!! We'll do another ride soon and suggestions are welcome. Cruiser ride photos can be viewed here.

It is exciting to announce that on May 26th Toronto’s first Bicycle Station
officially opened for business. The Grand Opening was a proud occasion which
hosted Mayor David Miller, Councillor Adrian Heaps and the City Staff who worked
so hard to implement this major step as part of Toronto’s Bike Plan. The
Bicycle station is an indoor secure bicycle parking facility that protects your
bike from theft, vandalism and bad weather. The station is located on York
Street in the West York Street Teamway of Union Station. The station’s 180
bicycle parking spots and close proximity to the TTC, GO Trains, Via Rail and
downtown core makes commuting by bicycle much easier and safer.

The station includes a change room, a mechanic's stand and a variety of tools
for customer use as well as a vending machine with emergency bike necessities
such as tubes, tire levers, patch kits, and of course refreshing beverages.
Security measures include staffed hours from 7am to 7pm as well as 24 hour video
surveillance. Park your bike for the day and pay only $2.

Benefits of membership (i.e., lifetime $25 + $20/month) include a free Bicycle
Station t-shirt printed on organic cotton, a free copy of Dandyhorse Magazine
and a 10% discount at participating Bike shops. Once you register for a parking
plan you get 24 hour access to the station via electronic key fob and are
guaranteed a parking spot for the duration of your plan.

If you are interested in more information including prices and registration,
visit the website at http://www.toronto.ca/cycling/bicycle-station or call
416-338-3666. Hope to see you there!

2. Toronto Bike Plan - New Strategic Directions

A recent staff report presents six new strategic directions for achieving the
Bike Plan’s goals for the period 2009-11. The new directions for the Bike Plan

are to:

• launch a Toronto Public Bicycle System by Spring 2010;
• expand the downtown bikeways to support the Public Bicycle System;
• accelerate construction of the Bikeway Network trails;
• expand high-security bicycle parking facilities;
• develop a comprehensive research and evaluation program; and
• develop a new promotion and communications strategy.

The Toronto Bike Plan New Strategic Directions report was received by the Public
Works and Infrastructure Committee on June 3rd. View the full document:

http://www.toronto.ca/legdocs/mmis/2009/pw/bgrd/backgroundfile-21588.pdf

3. 2009 Bikeway Network Program

On June 3rd, the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee considered a report
on the Bikeway Network Program for 2009. The Committee recommended City Council
approve 20.6 km of new bike lanes. City Council will consider these bike lanes
at their next meeting on July 6-7. View the list of bike lane projects at
http://www.toronto.ca/cycling/bikeplan/network-project-status.htm

The next batch of proposed bike lanes is expected to be submitted to Public
Works in the fall. These bicycle lanes include several contra-flow bicycle
lanes and short connecting bike lanes which are an integral part of the West End
Bikeways Project. With the approval of these bike lanes Transportation will be
installing 16km of connected bikeways and shared roadways to complete the
Bikeway Network in this area.

4. Brimorton Drive Bicycle Lane Installed

The installation of the Brimorton bicycle lane (from Brimley Road to Scarborough
Golf Club Road) was completed last week. This installation adds 4.1 km to the
City's Bikeway Network, for a total of 105 km of bike lanes. The painting crews
are now hard at work completing the Annette Street bicycle lanes in the west
end.

5. City of Toronto Employee Bike Sharing Launched

On Friday, 12 June the City of Toronto Environment Office launched an employee
bike sharing program as part of its Smark Commute initiative and the Live Green
campaign. A pool of bikes has been made available for employees. This is a
voluntary program for City employees with the main location at Nathan Phillips
Square.

For further information about the Employee Bike Share Program or information
about the launch, please contact:

Marco Iacampo,
Smart Commute Toronto-Central
Toronto Environment Office
416.392.6063

6. TTC Bicycle Infrastructure Initiatives

Eighteen additional bike rack-equipped bus routes became operational effective
May 25 (coinciding with the start of Bike Month), resulting in bike rack service
on 89 of 167 bus routes, meaning just over half of all routes in the city now
have bike rack service. TTC expects that over 85% of all TTC bus

routes will have bike rack service by the end of 2009.

In addition, TTC has committed to enhanced bicycle parking facilities in all new
subway stations to be built and all renovations to current stations. An array
of possible bicycle enclosure and bicycle station designs are being looked at
for a number of locations in the years to come, as well as the
development of a Bike Plan by the Transit Commission.

7. Crothers Woods Trail Management Strategy

This year we will be continuing with trail improvements in Crothers Woods as
outlined in the Crothers Woods Trail Management Strategy. Our focus over the
next few months will be to continue to improve degraded sections of intermediate
single trail throughout the area. Please be aware of all construction in
Crothers Woods and respect all trail closures during this time.

Unilever Support
NETP would like to thank the Unilever Canada Foundation for generously
supporting sustainable trail use and ecological protection in the Don Valley
through it's Community Vitality Fund this year. Unilever and it's staff have
been very supportive of the project through donating staff resources and time in
Crothers Woods for several years and have been a key partner in supporting the
NETP.

This year Unilever staff will be working with NETP to help replant areas of
trails in the Lower Don that need to be restored after recent construction and
closures.

Trail Building Workshop
This year the NETP will be hosting a public trail building day in Crothers Woods
on October 10, 2009. The day will be led by IMBA staff and will include all
training and tools and is open to all members of the community. Please mark this
date on your calendar and plan to join us to do your part in improving the
natural environment trail system in the Don Valley.

Trail Stewardship Opportunities
We are currently working with several community groups who have volunteered
their services for Trail Stewardship Days in Crothers Woods. You will be seeing
these teams of volunteers out on the trails this summer and fall helping
maintain the trail system and protect the natural environment through trail
building, garbage cleanup, ecological restoration, trail maintenance and
monitoring.

8. Bike Train schedule and tickets now available

The Bike Train is a unique way to experience a cycling getaway. Getting to the
destination is made easy as passengers travel in comfort on the train while

their bicycles are safely secured in a baggage car with bike racks. The Toronto
- Niagara Greenbelt Express takes place over 8 weekends, with a special launch
event June 27th. The Toronto-North Bay Route has been confirmed for the weekend
of August 7-10. Space is limited. Visit our website at
www.biketrain.ca for more information.

9. Ward 29 Community Meeting 17 June at East York Community Centre

Things are shaping up for the Wednesday, June 17 Ward 29 Community Meeting for
those who cycle (and those who’d like to) Although 29 Bikes is based in

Toronto-Danforth, residents from adjacent Toronto wards are encouraged to come
out and help advance the cycling agenda.

Hi All,

I thought you should know of a few items:

1. The rights to hold the Canadian National Road Championships for 2011 and 2012 were awarded to the City of Burlington!
This is going to be an amazing spectacle. The City of Burlington is really, really big into promoting cycling tourism and the events surrounding the Nationals, so be prepared for some really great promotions and activities sponsored by the City for the 2 years of the events.

By the time the Nationals are held, Lakeshore Road should be made more cycling friendly so you will be able to bike to the events, store your bike safely in a 'bike corral' (with security) and enjoy a criterium by the lake and park.

Expect some very cycling and family friendly activities.

The Road Race will be taking place along Plains Road, going over the QEW on Lemonville Rd, over to Snake Road, thru a bit of Waterdown and then down Waterdown Rd, over the QEW to Plains Road.  The descending speeds down Waterdown Road (which will be rebuilt by the time of the Nationals) will be stunning.

Congratulations to Craig Fagan, Andrew Paradowski, City of Burlington Councillors and Mayor of Burlington and the many others who coordinated this application.

2. The Ontario Provincial Road Championships for July 25 and 26th, 2009 are almost here.
If you want to volunteer, contact Andrew (cc'ed above)
He needs all sorts of people
Let him know you are from the Oakville CC

3. Share the Road fund raiser - thanks!
Thanks to all of you who generously donated to support Share the Road (STR). The members donated $275, and the Club added $250! That is a total of $525.

Way to go!

Eleanor McMahon, the founder of STR, is tentatively scheduled to speak to the Oakville Cycle Club Members on Tues, June 23rd at the King's Arms in Oakville (on Church, near Trafalger and Lakeshore) at 7:30. She will present items she learned from her trip to Belgium to the Velo City world conference. She has debriefed me quickly and some of the amazing things that are going on in cycling for the betterment of cyclists, the environment and just pure improvement in the quality of life are stunning. Europe is much further along on incorporating Active Transportation (walking and cycling) into their life styles then we are here in North America. But at $2.50 per litre of gas, it gets expensive to drive for all your errands.

At this meeting, we will be handing over the money raised to STR. Expect some media presence, so lets come out in large numbers and please, behave!

Here is a link to a 'Bike Lanes' show that Eleanor did on the CBC radio last week. go about half way down the page and click on the link on the left hand side.

4. Cycling and Active Transportation Plans for City of Burlington and Town of Oakville

Oakville Active Transportation Plan
A huge "Thank you" to David Harris for presenting his views to the Town of Oakville two weeks ago on the Town's Active Transportation Plan. David has been an active cyclist in many countries and brings a well rounded perspective to the issues.

I was unable to make the meeting due to a last minute conflict that required me to be out of town. My remarks, on behalf of the OCC, were presented to the Oakville Town Councillors by Chris Clapham of the Town. Chris has a cool role where he looks to link all transportation aspects together, instead of looking at the modes of transportation individually. The role makes sense, but it has not existed before. My notes are attached. Here is the link to the website info.

If you have additional comments, please send your comments to Chris Clapham, Project Coordinator. Comments will be received until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, July 10, 2009.

Burlington Cycling Master Plan
Burlington Councillers will be voting on thier Cycling Master Plan on Wednesday, June 24th at 2:00 PM. The Plan was put forward as presented more than a month ago with two items removed and put into other budgets. Those items are eduction (for cyclists and motorists) and promotion. The Plan can be found here. Note that the website says the voting will be on June 22nd. The correct date is the 24th.

If you can show up for the Burlington Plan, that would be great. I saw that cyclists showed up in Toronto wearing thier helmets to signify that bikers were present. A great idea.
If you want to speak at the Burlington Council meeting, register ASAP and keep it short. The Councillers have already heard from the OCC, the Burlington Cycling Committee and others in support of the Plan.

5. TT tonite at Moffat
There was a quite strong attendance last month with 9 riders showing up in the light rain.
This is a non-intimidating event, so give it a shot. $2 for OCC members, $4 for other OCA members. (You have OCA insurance when you belong to the OCC).
There is a random draw for a massage from the Oakville Massage and Wellness Centre, plus a great night out.
Here is a link to more info on our website.

6. The Learn to Ride class was cancelled
It will be rescheduled.
An overview is provided here.
The class is intended for adults who ride with our Club.
There has been interest in conducting a class for children (12 and under). This is being taken into consideration.

Safe Riding!

Hello all.

If you’re looking for a great ride on Sat June 20, then join up with the Sears National Kids Cancer Ride as we move from Woodstock to Toronto that day.

We start at 08:00 in Woodstock and finish 174km later at SickKids. There are ride-along options in Woodstock, Brantford, Burlington and Sherway Gardens. That is, ride 10km out from any of these cities, ride between any of the cities, or go all the way in to Toronto if you want. We stop at Sears Oakville Place at 14:30, but there’s no ride-along out of Oakville. There is, though, a big community celebration at SickKids that afternoon and everyone is welcome.

The ride is fully supported, entry is $25 and the suggested fundraising minimum is $100. Of note, 100% of the donations go to help kids in their battle against cancer. Return transportation is not provided.

Check out www.nationalkidscancerride.com for more information and to sign up. We’d love to have you join us.

Cheers,

Steve Bright

Just another reminder that tomorrow’s touring ride starts from Hornby rather than Boyne.

Please note that this Sunday’s ride will start from HORNBY rather than Boyne.  The starting location is the gravel parking lot just East of 6th Line on South Side of Steeles. It’s not the paved parking lot at the baseball diamond but the one about 100 meters further East.  Starting time is 9.00 am.

See you there.

Toronto’s Bike Month is May 25 to June 25. Check out the website for all the amazing activities.

Some of the events this weekend include:

-May 29 St Lawrence Market Criterium 5-9:30pm speeds upto 60kph without gasoline!

-May 30 Bikes Without Borders Bike for Africa on beautiful Toronto Islands

http://www.bikeswithoutborders.org/bikeforafrica/intro.html

This May 30 from 1pm to 8pm, Toronto Islands will host one of the most fun, exciting, and inspiring fundraisers in Canada. The 1st Annual Virgin Mobile/Bikes Without Borders Bike for Africa on beautiful Toronto Islands will transform Toronto Islands into a rural district in Malawi - for 2 hours participants will live the life of an African community healthcare worker, with challenges and tasks such as delivering 'medications' to remote communities, providing HIV/AIDS 'education', and other community care support services. At the end of the bike/walk event, we'll have a community picnic dinner and will entertain you with some of Toronto's hottest local bands, including Mr. Something Something, the WitHouts, and Samba Squad. Although the cause of saving the lives of those affected by HIV/AIDS in Malawi is serious, the emphasis for participants will be on fun and hope - the hope that you will be providing to communities and people in Malawi. (please note: no knowledge of Malawi or HIV/AIDS issues is required - your tasks will consist of delivering and picking up task cards to stations along the route)

Subject: Malvern Road Race - Saturday, May 30, 2009
Importance: High

ATTENTION ALL RIDERS:

The Malvern Bicycle Classic is rapidly approaching and we need
participants. There are two components to the day that are open to
members. The first is the open race at noon hour for UCI licenced
cyclists, Junior through Master, Male and Female. This is another one
of those rare events in Toronto where we have closed roads and a
challenging circuit. It is one hour of racing plus one lap. If we have
full entry there is a great prize board and even a prime or two. The
second event is the first stop on the Ontario Youth Series. Both races
are held on a great urban circuit with distances suitable for our youth
participants. We ask racers to bring old racing gear for us to donate
to the up and coming youth racers from the city of Toronto.

Racing opportunities within Toronto, on a closed circuit, do not come
often and right now the event is at risk due to a lack of registration
for both the youth and open race.

Please consider coming out to this race. Pre-Registration
<http://www.integratedsports.net/oca/ocaeventregistration.asp> is
through the OCA on line system and we will be taking entries up until
noon on Friday, May 29, 2009. Entry to the open race is limited to 100.

Sincerely,
