Fellow Members

Last year the Easy Pace group did a ride from Guelph to Elora and St. Jacobs and we would like to do it again if there is sufficient interest.

We would start at 10.00 on Sunday July 6 from Guelph and bike to Elora first and from there to St. Jacobs where we stop for lunch at the farmers market before heading back to Guelph where we would arrive between 2 and 3 pm.  Total distance is about 80 km at a leisurely pace (20-25 km). This is a fun ride rather than a training ride so we have time to enjoy the scenery and smell the flowers.

Can you let me know if you are interested in participating and I will provide further details.

Hi All,

Barry H has volunteered to help out - is there anyone else who can
contribute 2.5 hrs this Sat?

Location of race has yet to be posted, but it will be in Halton

The races are a great place to test your endurance
The club race is a 'friendly' way to get introduced to racing for anyone who
is interested

The more people who particpate, the better club we will have

Thx

Rob.

Fellow Members

Do you sometimes want to go for a ride and want to see if anyone else is interested?  Rather than phoning around to see if anyone is interested  or sending an email to everyone on Oakville Cycling Club’s email list, how about having an email list for everyone who might be interested in participating in a spur-of-the-moment ride?

Based on interest in a list like that, I have created a Yahoo Group called OCC Casual rides.  You can contact anyone on the list individually by sending an email from the group site or sending a note to everyone in the group.  How do you join the group?  It’s simple.  Just send me a note saying you are interested and I will add you to the list and send you full instructions.

Fellow cyclsts,

CanBiCuba C.C. runs a cycling development program within the high school system
in Cuba. We take donated used racing equipment and give it to the physical
education departments of a number of schools in Cuba.

Apart from our equipment donations we need additional revenue for such things as
transportation of the donations and team uniforms. Visit our site for support
event in August.

To help in our gathering of used racing equipment, the organizers of the CHIN
Picnic race at the CNE have kindly allowed us to put a “Bin @ the CHIN”. If
you have anything that you would like to donate, from patched inner tube to
complete bike, bring it and “Bin it at the CHIN”.

Form more information on our program:- www.CanBiCuba.ca

Hi All,

If you have 3 hours to help with the Time Trial this Sat it would be
appreciated
The location is No. 2 Side Road and Appleby Line
You would need to be there (church parking lot) at 8:30 AM
TT starts at 9:00 AM
Will be wrapped up by 11:15 AM

If you have a high school aged son or daughter who is looking to get some
community service hours, we can sign their form
   - we cannot drive the students as then we would require a security check
through the school and police

It is a minimal effort, just requires your time and it really benefits the
club and the riders

Thx

Please note that the parking lot is the gravel parking lot accessible from Steeles, not the paved parking lot as the town of Milton gets upset when we park there.

Just a quick note that there are three more races this summer put on the by the OCA for the little ones to get them interested in riding and racing.  The ages go from 10 years old all the way up.  My older son (11 years old) competed last week in Malvern and finished 5th in the time trial (2.5k) and 5th in the road race (13k).  The next race is this coming weekend in Newmarket called the Tour of Speed (June 14) and there are races August 24 in Windsor and September 27 in Toronto.

As well, I brought him out to the easy pace ride on Sunday morning (61k) and he did well and really enjoyed himself.  We rode off the back and we fell behind for a bit in the first half of the ride but he was able to keep up in the second half.  He needs experience riding in a group and the group we were with were very accommodating as he was sandwiched in between a couple of riders to protect him from traffic in the second half of the ride.  I encourage those with little ones to bring them out and get them interested.  I would be happy to ride slower with some other fathers or mothers and their children at the back and at a slower pace (I am slow in any event).  We had briefly discussed at the AGM to try and inject some youth into the club so here is an opportunity to do that.

Needless to say, our son has been bitten by the bug and keeps asking when we are going out riding as he is clearly motivated to improve after a participating in a few races.  I normally hear about hockey 24 hours a day from him, but thankfully not this summer...

This will be a short TT (17.6 km) so volunteer time would be in total < 2.0

Let me know if you can help out
No experience required

If you want to come out and ride, please be there at least 15 minutes before
the start
- a TT is a great way to test your fitness level
- 17 km is a nice introductory ride for new riders

Greg,

I don't think I sent you this like yet...on the weekend I finally posted my TALL
(60cm) Bianchi road bike on Craigslist:

http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/tor/bik/693749450.html

For friends (and friends of friends referred directly) it is negotiable. I might
consider selling the bike for less without the front wheel (i.e. keeping it for
my next bike). Since most riders who aren't 300lbs could get away with using any
well-built front wheel (Shimano 105 etc) this option might make it easier for
someone to buy it...especially if they have a spare 700C road wheel kicking
around (and honestly, who doesn't?)

I "Hope" all is well with you...

Hi All,

For 3rd Sat of the month TT, we have changed the location from Strabane to
Zimmerman
    - Strabane route roads are in very bad shape
    - there will be a TT in this location the 3rd Sat in May, June, July and
Aug
    - this will allow you to see how well you have progressed in your fitness
over the season

We will do 2 laps of this circuit starting Sat at 9:00 AM
   - start: on No. 2 Side Road (just East of Walker's Line)
   - go to Walker's Line, turn right on Walker's Line
   - go to Derry Rd, turn Right on Derry Rd
   - go to Appleby Line, turn Right on Appleby Line
   - go to No. 2 Side Rd, turn Right on No. 2 Side Rd
   - each lap is 16.7 km

If you plan to ride, please:
   - bring your OCA number, your OCC number and your $2 ($4 if not an OCC
member)
   - register by 8:45 AM
      - I will be there in dark grey Toyota Sienna van wearing a black 'Tour
de France' baseball hat

For parking, if the church parking lot is open on Sat (corner of No. 2 and
Appleby Line) that would be the best location
   - if not, please park on the south side of No. 2 Side Rd

If can volunteer, please call me at 905-332-6461

Thanks!

GREAT WATERFRONT TRAIL ADVENTURE

Registration for this 8 day, 680 km end-to-end tour of the Waterfront Trail will be closing on June 1st, and we don’t want you to miss the opportunity to join in the fun.  You can join for one or two days, or the whole week, come by yourself and make friends along the way, or bring your friends and family with you.  People have signed on from across Canada and the US and include a cyclist as young as 9 to as experienced as 76 years old; there are families, riders new to touring, and those who have done tours before, as well as non-riders excited to take part in the fun.  Check the website for more information and to view the updated itineraries: http://www.waterfronttrail.org/gwta_web/

The Waterfront Trail now has a facebook group, so join up, share your stories, pictures, and make new friends.

FEATURED ROUTE – Oakville to Hamilton

The Waterfront Trail connects 41 communities along the Canadian shores of Lake Ontario and the Provincial shores of the St. Lawrence River.  The Trail from Oakville to Hamilton meanders through the charming main streets of Oakville, Bronte, and Burlington, with unique shops, welcoming coffee shops and restaurants, museums, and scenic views.  The route is approximately 70 km round trip, depending on where you start and finish, with numerous places to stop, refuel, rest, and explore. Detailed maps can be found at:
http://www.waterfronttrail.org/trail.html

TRAIL TALE – by Cori Arthur
<<image.jpg>>
I tend to use the Waterfront Trail in Cobourg especially on my lunch hour as I walk alongside Cobourg’s sandy beach, but what a treat one night after work loading up the bicycles and heading farther east directly south of Grafton (Station Rd) to Orchard Grove Rd.  There my friend and I began an easy trek east in anticipation of visiting the newest accommodation on the Trail, Folklore Bed and Breakfast, and then proceeding farther along for a picnic dinner at Wicklow Beach.

A winding gravel driveway lead us through a grassy field towards Lake Ontario and a most picturesque 1860s log home--Folklore.  The view looking south was stunning; the welcome from the cat was charming.   I marveled at the way owner Leslie Benson toured us through her home telling us how this log home and barn were moved into place from away in numbered pieces.  Our picnic dinner at Wicklow Beach took place in Leslie’s kitchen since we chatted at length and dusk fell sooner than expected.

FEATURED ATTRACTION – Assembly Hall

The Assem <<image.jpg>> bly  Hall is located on the scenic Lakeshore Grounds in South Etobicoke. This  century-old building has undergone a major renovation by the City of Toronto,  which preserved its historic charm, blended with modern updates and  amenities.   Now serving as  a cultural centre, Assembly Hall presents a variety of activates including,  cookie decorating workshops, gardening days, art shows, and theatre.  http://www.toronto.ca/culture/assembly_hall.htm

FEATURED ACTIVITY – Nordic Walking

Nordic walking has <<image.jpg>> been likened to cross country skiing without the skis and is transforming Canada’s most popular physical activity into a total body workout. Urban poling can be done in any location you can walk. But the poles, which come with rubber boot tips for added shock absorbency and grip on asphalt surfaces, are most perfectly suited for settings like the Waterfront Trail where you can really step out, get a rhythm going, and let the poles help propel you forward at a good pace. WARNING: The informati <<image.jpg>> on and suggestions <<image.jpg>> in this newsletter have been developed to assist Trail users in planning both their recreational and commuting trips along the Waterfront Trail. It mentions signed routes of the Trail, as well as possible routes and connections in areas where routes have not yet been designated as part of the Waterfront Trail. The possible routes and connections have been identified in consultation with the municipalities and Conservation Authorities of Lake Ontario and from Trail users. Some of these possible routes and connections may not be ideal for cycling, in-line skating, or hiking. They may be unsuitable for some Trail users because of the close proximity to vehicular traffic or unsuitable trail surface. Whenever possible, indicators have been placed on the maps to warn of caution areas. However, be prepared to make your own evaluation of traffic, trail and road conditions, and plan routes appropriate to your riding, in line skating, and hiking skills and your comfort level. This newsletter is not intended as a guide for children.

Fellow members

For a number of reasons (including Mothers Day) there may not be ride leaders for this Sundays Easy Pace and Leisure Pace rides.  You can still enjoy the rides though – I attach maps of the two rides if you want to come out.  The start and finish point is Boyne Community Centre (on the North side of Britannia just East of Highway 25).

See you all on Tuesday where the rides will also start from Boyne Community Centre at 6 pm.

Hi,

I'm a participating in The Ride to Conquer Cancer and was wondering if you could post something on your website to the effect that The Ride to Conquer Cancer needs Crew Members to help out with the ride one the weekend of June 20-22, 2008.

Crew members help out as bike mechanics, bike parkers and road crew. They are our route guides, they install route signage they even distribute food and drinks along the route and turn an empty field into a camp site. There are so many diverse roles a Crew Member can take on, and it is the Crew that truly brings the event to life.

Registering as a Crew Member is a great way to make a difference and use your biking expertise to help others.

For more information you can call the Ride office at (416) 815-RIDE (7433) or

go to the website at www.conquercancer.ca . The Crew Information page is at

Thank-you,
Gail  Tedford

Subject: Spinning Event: I really need RIDERS please.

Hello My cycling Friends!

I am coming to you in the final hours asking for your help. I know the weather is turning nice outside and trust me, I love the road just as much as you do. In fact this last weekend, I got in over 7 1/2 hours of riding time in.

But all that aside, many of you of seen my emails about the event I have been planning for this coming Sunday, May 4th, 2008, and on that day, I have 20 spin bikes and 7 trainers available. With registrations, the numbers are lower then I had hoped and a little less from those I know best. I am calling upon you to help me fill the seats. I have 84 - 1hr spots still open. You can book multiple hours, or just one. My afternoon slots are the most open, but the board is pretty wide right now. Please see the attached schedule to see my open time slots.

Missing this many riders to fill the seats is going to have a drastic effect on the help I was hoping to provide these young kids in Africa. If you can find the time to join me, Please fill out the registration form online at http://www.rideforrafiki.ca and I will reduce the registration fee to $15 and if you can pull together a $150 or more in pledges per rider, I will waive the fee. I really want the room to be filled with energy and I know the power that you would bring would help me achieve that. I have seen what you can do, can you come help me out?

Again, please look at your schedule on Sunday, please see where you can fit me in after your morning ride, or morning gardening, or any relaxing thing you might have planned.

Most sincerely,

Adam

P.S. This is open to as many riders as I can get and you don't have to be a member of the gym and you can bring your cheering crowd and you can bring a friend if you want.
