GROUP RIDES:
From Tibor Schimek:
Re: Saturday Ride
Last Saturday's ride (April 16th) from Walker's and Dundas was great as
usual. It Was great, first of all, because the same cast of characters
showed up again, so on this second ride of the season, we could catch up
on who did what during the winter. At the start, there were eight (8) of
us, and we started up
Walker's Line promptly at 9:03 AM. Some of the regulars, like Barry and
Daryl did not show up, because of a bout with a flue/cold, but we are
expecting them next weekend. The day was perfect for cycling, clear
skies, no wind, 10C at the start, which climbed to 18C by the time we
finished around 11:30 AM. Couple of riders were already sporting shorts,
the
rest of us had short sleeved vests or double jerseys.
We rode our usual course, west on Britannia to Millburough Townline, to
Centre Road, through Carlisle, to Campbellville Road and stopped for some
coffee and discussion at the Bruce Trail Eatery. This is a usual hangout
for cyclists on the weekends, as even on this occasion we were joined by
the Mississauga Cycling Club riders, who numbered in the thirties. Yes,
there was lot of money on show, tied up in bikes and outfits at this
coffee shop. After about 10 minute stop, we continued on our way back, in
a counterclockwise direction, traveling west on Campbellville Road to
Tremaine, up and down the terrain, to 2nd Sideroad, to Appleby, to 1st
Sideroad, and down Walker's Rd.
back to the parking lot. In all, the pace was quite synchronous,
averaging 28 km/h for a distance of 62 km, with a riding time of 2hrs 11
minutes. It was very evident who of the riders trained during the winter,
and who did not, but in a group ride like ours, it did not matter, as we
all re-grouped at logical intervals, like turns or stop signs. On the
whole, we all stayed together, stronger pulling at the front, and those
not so strong being nurtured along in the draft.
Personally, I want the Saturday ride to be all inclusive, and welcome
riders to this ride with all abilities. The more riders we get, the
better are the chances that someone else of your calibre will show up, and
then you will have someone to enjoy the ride with. If riders of different
abilities show up, we will try to all stay together, allowing some bursts
of speed, etc. now and then, but we will re-group along the way, or we
will make a conscientious decision to split up into logical groups. So
that's all for now, I don't intend to write about every weekend ride, but
I hope that I have given you a flavour of what to expect on a ride out of
walker's Line and Dundas St. Going forward, we will probably maintain
this speed, and distance for the next month or so, maybe a tad slower, and
then in June or so, increase both, speed and distance to say 29-30 km/h
average, and distances of 65-80 km. Are you up for it? See you on the
roads and trails.

From Joe Marangi:
Re: Sunday April 17th ride.
Our first easy paced group ride of the season was fantastic. We had 19
riders who took part. Departing from Neyagawa and Dundas in North
Oakville, we embarked on a beautiful ride through the picturesque routes
just north of the city. Ride time was approx 2 hours.
I have to say a big Thank You to Adam Scott who helped me lead the ride.
There were many new riders who came out, and with his help, everyone who
started – finished!.
We didn’t lose anyone. Our pace was a decent 23-25km/h. There were mostly
flat road – though Adam saw fit to take some of the gang up Bell School
Line and back down to see if all those spin classes worked or not.
I would like to say thank you to those that came out and took part. It
will be my pleasure and honour to lead you again this coming Sunday -
though if it is raining, we will NOT be riding.

Saturday April 23rd Spring Kick Off Social:
DON’T FORGET.
Saturday night is our indoor social night. Start time is 7pm at the King’s
Arms in Downtown Oakville. Greg and Anilee Andre-Barrett (club members)
will be giving an exciting slideshow of their recent bike tour across
Spain. Some of us have seen the show already, and it is second to none.
The evening should run to about 8:30pm – though we have the room until
10pm if some of you would like to say longer and tell a few more lies.
Also, the pub has a decent menu. Why not show up a bit earlier and get a
bite/drink before the meeting starts.
Remember, the meeting is in the upstairs meeting room.
Also, we will have information on our various sectors of the club and
aspects of the schedule. If you are new to the club and have some
questions, please come out and meet the other members. This is a great
opportunity to meet other members and find out what the club has to offer
you.
CLOTHING:
Club Clothing is in. If you would like to buy some, please visit:
http://www.oakvillecc.com/clubclothing.shtml
Omar will also have our clothing available at the race on Saturday and at
the Social on Saturday evening. Bring your cash or cheques and get the
clothing while there is still some left. Once it is gone, we won’t be
ordering any more this year.
