Let's try that again. Yahoo likes to filter everything...
"On the morning of my departure, I find myself staring at a mountain
of baggage.
Two bikes, four sets of wheels, spare parts and tools, and a minimal
amount of clothing..
Maybe I should have tried swimming instead.
I have stressed the past three years, doing all I could to make my
third Olympics.
This time around was even worse, as the size of the team continues to
shrink and the standards become more difficult to achieve.
Fortnuately, I have had great support from many sponsors: my trade
Teams, the Tim Horton’s National Cycling Team and most of all my
partner Helene. She will be travelling to Athens later this week to
cheer me on.
I also deeply appreciate the support I have received from all of my
family and friends back home in Northern Ontario. The opportunities
and inspiration provdied to me from this great comminuity has given
me the backbone to get this far.
I guess the good news is that on the 6th of August the Internatinal
Olympic Committee (IOC) has granted Canada us one spot for the
Individual Time Trial and the Canadian Cycling Association has
choosen me. I will now be racing the Cycling Road Race (224 km,
August 14th) and the Individual Time Trial (50 km, August 18th). I’m
honored.
I have just completed another big block of training in an attempt to
peak for next week. My daily rides have been a mix of 160-180km treks
through the Santa Cruz Mountains to the Pacific ocean and several
motorpacing sessions (I draft Helene on our scooter at 55-60 kmph) to
bring up my leg speed. I have also been racing regularly with the
Sierra Nevada Team, and have had some good races despite my efforts
to drive myself into the ground.
My diet of watermelon and squash has trimmed me down to fighting
weight (check with your doctor before embarking on this adventure).
I have been going back and forth with the rest of my Tim Hortons
National Teammates who I’ll be racing with in Athens. Like myself,
Gord Fraser chose to remain home in North Amercia to race with his
trade team and complete his training period. Mike Barry has been over
in Europe, racing with the Postal Team. I think all of us are going
well. Although we do not race together frequently, we know each
others strenghts and have a great deal of respect for each other.
This makes it easier for us to lay it on the line for the good of the
team, instead of the individual.
There’s no doubt we’ll have our hands full, as our team size is only
three (most countries have 5-6), and many riders are just coming off
the Tour de France. As much as I hate to admit it, some good luck and
proper planetary alignment could help us a great deal. However our
plan is to just “GIV’ER”.
I’ve a plane to catch.
Stay tuned!
Eric"
