You may not be aware that the MidWeek Cycle Club is organizing the Provincial Road Race Championships in Burlington on July 26th. See the route here. This is a huge undertaking and we wish that Andrew & Craig (the organizers from MidWeek) have a resounding successful event.
To ensure they have a huge success, they need volunteers. For an event of this size to be successfull, it is extremely dependent on having lots of volunteers. Please read the following 2 blue paragraphs and respond to Andrew and CC me if you can in any way help out.
We would be thrilled if some of your members were to volunteer to help out with the provincials. The positions available are the standard bike race stuff, including Course Marshal, Registration, Setup, Strike, Pit Crew, Runners, Photographers, Lap Counter, etc. If anyone is interested, you can have them contact me directly and we'll get them set up right away. We even encourage high school kids to come out since they need the volunteer hours.
As for how the OCC could help? Like any club that puts on races, we've got a kit full of most of the essentials, but not a full service race production. If there's anything that you could provide to us to help keep the costs down, that would be great. Things like staging/tents/killer PA/radios or anything you think we could use. Also, if you know any motorcycle enthusiasts who would be willing to do lead out for the various pelotons, that would be very helpful.
- Peter B, Claudiu T and possibly Joe M - I have already tagged you as photographers
- we need more...
- Mark - can you use your motorcycle?
- I may use mine - not sure if I can descend Waterdown Road that fast though!
- if anyone is aware of a motorcycle club that rides in Halton, please contact them or let me know and I will contact them
- I will contact Long and McQuade to see what we can do for PA system / speakers
- but if any one else has any 'ins' on a PA, let me know as I don't really have any contacts there
- I will contact Aldershot High and Corpus Christi High to see if any of the students can volunteer
- feel free to contact other High Schools, but be sure to let us/me know who you are contacting so we don't go to the same school twice
This is really a big event for cycling, Midweek Club and the City of Burlington. It would be great if this event is such a huge success that there are more events in our Region. I have often said, and been told by people from across Ontario, that we have the most amazing riding here in Halton Region. (I do wish we had a climb like the Col de Peyresourde though... just a nice 15km hill with 6% grade - loved it)
So what is in it for you?
- You will feel great helping out the riders who are training like crazy, following thier dreams.
- I know the riders aren't riding for money at this level, it is a love of the sport
- The atmosphere is great (remember the World Cycling Champioships in Hamilton in 2003?)
- Hang out with people who love cycling
- you may also get a few tips on shaving those hard to get places on your legs
- Get to oggle some really hi-tech bikes (look but don't touch!) and dream of your next purchase...
- Get really inspired to get in better shape (still lots of riding left in the season!)
-
Make people want to come back to our Region because we are such great hosts!
- More awareness of cycling and hopefully more respect from the car drivers.
- Cycling is slammed for various reasons, let's show non-cyclists that we can be courteous and helpful
- The weather will be great (it never rains on my wife's birthday) so you can work on your tan and enjoy a great day
Contact Andrew and CC me please to see where you can help out.
Merci, ciao, cheers!
