What's New in 2006

Message from the President Tibor Schimek

Dear cycling enthusiasts.  This newsletter is being sent to you as a comprehensive synopsis of the decisions and plans discussed by the Oakville Club Executive that you may want to know about.  Each section below is authored by the respective Chair, and we hope that you will find them informative.

This year we hope to build on the successes of the past fifteen (15) years of the club's existence, and we hope that you will like our plans and participate in our events.  The club is only as good as the sum of its members and a receptive executive to help it reach its potential. Our club is an all inclusive club, open to all cycling enthusiasts, to people who would like to get or stay fit, and to people who would like to socialize, race or go on a local or far-away tour.  We would like to see many more new members, be it family or friends as well as keeping the old ones, because this sport has no age limit.

Going forward this year, I would like to encourage you to show up at our rides, to give a helping hand to any newcomers, and to volunteer on occasion whenever you can to make this club what it could be.  Family members are most welcome to show up at our events, to help us with promotional activities, or to help us distribute refreshments, etc.  If you have any ideas, time, or ability to benefit the club, please feel free to contact me or any member of the Executive or our key contacts.  I hope that you will enjoy being part of our club this year, and that I will meet you on the roads or trails!

Mountain Biking - TBD

We are looking for a new MTB Chair.  Any member who mountain bikes and is interested in chairing this activity is welcome to submit their name for consideration.  This section of our activities is a vibrant part of our club's offerings, and we need someone to be the key contact.

Road & Touring Rides – Daryl LeBlanc

This year we will have two types of rides: Road Rides at a brisk pace and Touring Rides at an easy Pace. To find out which type will suit you best, visit our web site and check them by clicking on these links, and of course by participating:

Brisk Pace Rides

Easy Pace Rides and Schedule

Racing – Terry Rooney

Our new season is longer than before so that we can still race into the early fall. Our points championship rewards results and consistently turning out and there are prizes for many riders because of the age group awards in Time Trials. We have a new road race series for members only; this is designed as a fun experience for new racers of all ages and is handicapped according to ability. Our Elite series of races is designed for OCA licence holders or serious racers who want to test themselves against some of the best riders in the Province. Come and join the programme and don't forget to volunteer too as part of your racing programme. To find out more, check our web site.

Membership – Omar Arango

This year will be a great year. The club has re-dedicated itself to bring more excitement to all, so to take advantage of the new season, register as soon as possible by going to www.oakvillecc.com, download the membership forms (3 forms), complete them and mail them in.

Clothing - Omar Arango

For 2006 clothing will be done on an order basis only. There is still some stock left but it is minimal. So to not miss out on this great opportunity, all orders have to be in by March 20 (shorts and jerseys)

Web Site

Our club maintains two web sites, one located at http://www.oakvillecc.com, and the other is a Yahoo Group site at http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/oakvillecyclingclub/.  The first one is easy to remember, and can be easily promoted to interested enthusiasts. It adds a more formal look and feel to the club.  The Yahoo Group web site offers a little bit more interactive elements, where members can view and post messages, allowing for more spontaneity to say, announce your attendance at the upcoming event or an observation that you would like to share.  Currently, we do not have a dedicated individual to manage our web site, but we manage the content collectively through our executive.  Each chair or key contact for the area is responsible for their web page, so if you have any questions, ideas or concerns, please contact these individuals directly.  We hope that we cover the material you wish to see on our web sites to your liking, and that they will serve your needs well.

We have on a number of occasions received emails from other groups who would like to participate in their events or tours.  Rather than sending you emails every time that happens, we have decided to add links their web pages on the Important Links page on our web site.  So check it out and see if there are any tours or events that appeal to you.
