Subject: Phillip Buchanon gone to the Texans
oaklandsoldier
Offline Offline

A Raiders organization source confirmed Tuesday night that the team
traded cornerback Phillip Buchanon to the Houston Texans for a second-
round pick (47th overall) and a third-rounder in this weekend's NFL
draft. It wasn't clear whether the third-round selection was
Houston's 73rd or 78th overall.

The Raiders rid themselves of Buchanon, 24, and now have nine picks
in Rounds 2 through 6. Also, the team still covets a first-round
choice, according to a second source within the organization. That's
a pick Raiders executives have quietly sought since March 2, when
they traded the No. 7 overall selection to the Minnesota Vikings for
Pro Bowl wide receiver Randy Moss. The Raiders haven't been without a
first-round pick since 1989.

The Buchanon trade appears to be a Raiders coup, along the lines of
dumping disappointing linebacker Napoleon Harris in the Moss trade.
Over the last two seasons, opponents have avoided four-time Pro
Bowler Charles Woodson to pick on the often-out-of-position Buchanon
as many as 15 times per game. The one-time lethal punt returner also
became inert in 2004, often refusing to even field kicks. At one
point, the 5-foot-8 Buchanon complained that opponents' punts
were "too high."
Buchanon also pouted through the end of last season, saying in
December that he wanted out of Oakland.

Wish granted.

The second source said earlier Tuesday the Raiders were
having "discussions" with the Washington Redskins about trading
Buchanon and a second-round pick (38th overall) for the ninth overall
choice. Ultimately, the Redskins found that too steep a price for
Buchanon, although their leaders denied any talks about the ninth
pick ever took place. The Redskins later acquired the No. 25 overall
pick from the Denver Broncos for a third-round selection this year
and first-and fourth-round picks in 2006.

The source also said the Raiders are trying to trade tight end Doug
Jolley and continuing their attempts to deal Woodson. Jolley, 26,
emerged as a leading downfield receiving threat during the 2002 Super
Bowl season, but that was under Bill Callahan's short-passing West
Coast offense. Last season, Jolley fell out of favor with first-year
coach Norv Turner, whose power-running, deep-passing scheme requires
tight ends to be primarily blockers.

The Buchanon trade and the fact the Raiders are seeking to deal
Jolley amounts to an indirect - and rare - admission that the team
largely whiffed on the 2002 draft.

Buchanon was the Raiders' first choice, 17th overall. Their second
choice in the first round, at No. 23, was Harris, who briefly was
benched for ineffectiveness last season.

The Raiders' second choice of the second round was Jolley, at 55th
overall. The only high pick left from that draft is second-rounder
Langston Walker, who has started 11 games in three seasons. The
offensive tackle appears destined for another season as a backup.

LaDainian Tomlinson isn't going to let a strained groin keep him
from playing, not with the San Diego Chargers' biggest rival coming
to town.

Despite playing hurt in the past three games and missing several
practices this week, Tomlinson is expected to play when the Chargers
meet the Oakland Raiders.

"I consider the Raiders our biggest rival because everybody around
town loves that game," Tomlinson said. "That's the game you look
forward to playing."

Two of Tomlinson's five best games as a pro came against the Raiders
in 2003. He had a career-high 243 rushing yards in a home victory in
the season finale, and 187 yards in an overtime loss at Oakland on
Sept. 28.

Of course, how he does this time will depend on how his groin feels.
Tomlinson hasn't cracked 65 yards in any of the past three games,
although he did catch four passes for 78 yards the week after he was
hurt.

"It was pretty bad at first, but it's getting better," said
Tomlinson, who was hurt in the second half of a home victory against
Tennessee on Oct. 3 after rushing for 147 yards.

Backup running back Jesse Chatman has done a nice job of spelling
Tomlinson over the past three games, rushing for 207 yards and three
scores.

Tomlinson limped off the field Oct. 24 after the Chargers defeated
Carolina 17-6 to improve to 4-3.

San Diego arguable was the NFL's worst team in 2003 and ended up
missing the playoffs for the eighth consecutive season. The Chargers
already have equaled their victory total from last year.

Keenan McCardell and the new-look Chargers face a soft Oakland
defense.

"I think we are in a very good position," said quarterback Drew
Brees, who was all but shoved aside by management in the offseason,
only to bounce back remarkably with a 95.5 passer rating, sixth best
in the NFL.

The Raiders' season is coming apart quickly after four consecutive
losses. Injuries and inconsistent play from quarterback Kerry Collins
have been the biggest reasons for their demise.

In a 31-26 defeat to New Orleans on Oct. 24, the Raiders lost
starting left guard Frank Middleton and rookie receiver Carlos
Francis for the remainder of season because of injuries.

Middleton, an eight-year veteran who turned 30 on Oct. 25, was carted
off the field Oct. 24 with a torn left quadriceps muscle. Francis
tore the ACL in his left knee when he fumbled a fourth-quarter
kickoff.

"It's the game. Guys get injured," right tackle Robert Gallery
said. "Somebody's got to fill his spot. Somebody's got to be ready to
go. We've just got to get better. We've got to do the things to win.
When we start winning, we'll talk about our progress."

Collins has recorded nine interceptions and only four touchdown
passes in 4½ games since taking over for Rich Gannon, who broke a
vertebra in his neck last month and is out for the season.

However, Collins did have his best game Oct. 24, completing 26 of 45
passes for 350 yards and two touchdowns.

Sebastian Janikowski kicked field goals of 28, 42, 44 and 40 yards
for the Raiders, who outgained the Saints 432-322.

Two days after saying, "I'll be all right," cornerback Charles
Woodson showed up on the injury list as doubtful for Sunday's game at
San Diego. But Turner said Wednesday that Woodson told him he expects
to play.

The team's franchise-player designee banged his left knee into New
Orleans' Joe Horn's right knee last Sunday.

There is some added significance to Woodson possibly missing - or
being hampered for - the Chargers game. San Diego acquired veteran
receivers Keenan McCardell and Bobby Shaw as new targets for
resurgent Drew Brees, who this month has completed more than 70
percent of his passes for six touchdowns and one interception.

McCardell, with just three days of practice with his new team, had
five catches for a team-high 65 yards and four first downs - two on
what proved to be San Diego's game-winning drive at Carolina.

After CIA-like intrigue all summer over where the Raiders' second-
overall draft choice would start, or if he would start, Gallery has
been mostly inconspicuous through the 61/ 2 games he has played at
right tackle - at least as inconspicuous as a 6-foot-7, 325-pound
behemoth can be.

Of course, that's not such a bad deal for an offensive lineman. The
more well-known he is, the more likely he has been holding, jumping
into false starts or being beaten by opposing pass rushers.
Sunday, Gallery shut down the NFL's leading sack man, Saints end
Charles Grant - a large reason the Raiders prevented a sack for the
first time this season. For the season, Gallery has two holding
penalties - one in each of the last two games - and four false
starts. Three of the false starts came Oct. 3 at Houston, quarterback
Kerry Collins' first start.

"I think he's quietly having a real good year for a rookie," coach
Norv Turner said of Gallery, the 2003 Outland Trophy winner as
college football's best interior lineman. "And he's become more
physical. He's a physical player, anyway. He's really going to be
special."

If so, Turner and the Raiders still believe that will be at left
tackle, the key offensive-line position to protect the backside of a
right-handed quarterback, which the Raiders have in Collins. Gallery
has been at right tackle since replacing struggling Langston Walker
late in the first half of the Sept. 12 opener at Pittsburgh. It's a
position Gallery has played only once in his life - and only for a
week or so, during his freshman season at Iowa.

In that time, Gallery, 24, has been receiving the normal rookie
indoctrination to the NFL each Sunday from opposing veterans.

"Everybody's, 'Hey, Rook! I'm going to do this. I'm going to do
that,' " he said. "But I didn't hear much after a while in a lot of
those games. They can say what they want. Yeah, I am a rookie. But
I'm going to bust you like I've been around for a while."

Still, Gallery isn't satisfied.

"I'm not one for patting myself on the back because I don't think I
deserve it," he said. "When I deserve it, I'll do that. That will be

Kerry Collins is now being booed by his home fans just for stepping
onto the Coliseum field, roasted by the same fans who a month ago
begged for him to be the Raiders' starting quarterback.

Then again, eight interceptions, two fumbles and three straight
losses - his tally heading into Sunday's home game against the New
Orleans Saints - do tend to lower a guy's standing.
Times are so gnarly for Collins this week that team owner Al Davis
was referring to him as "the tough situation."

"The tough situation was trying to find his way and still is," Davis
said Tuesday. "He was brilliant against Tampa Bay (16 of 27 passes,
228 yards, one touchdown, one interception in relief of Rich Gannon).
He was brilliant all preseason. And we'll see if we can get him back
to being brilliant again."

But there is something missing in all this Raiders rushing to
judgment. Namely, Raiders rushing.

Sure, Collins has given away more than Bob Barker since taking over
for Gannon early in the 30-20 win over Tampa Bay on Sept. 26. It was
Oakland's last victory.

He and coach Norv Turner have said after each of the three losses
since that Collins is trying to do too much. He's trying to force
passes that are covered, that just aren't there.

So why not give Collins fewer passes to force? Why not run more?

"I think any quarterback benefits from having a strong running game,"
Collins said. "I know I certainly have in the past."

Collins' mercurial NFL career has shown balance to be the ally that
propelled him to the two best years of his 10-year career.

In 1996, as a second-year player with the expansion Carolina
Panthers, Collins was aided by a rugged running game that averaged 31
rushes per game and featured 1,120-yard back Anthony Johnson.

The Panthers went a surprising 12-4 and advanced to the NFC
championship game. Collins threw for 2,464 yards, with 14 touchdowns
and just nine interceptions - one of only three years he has thrown
more touchdowns than interceptions. He averaged 23 passes per game
that year.

In 2002, Collins threw for a career-high 4,073 yards while averaging
34 passes per game as a reborn New York Giant. Meanwhile, Tiki Barber
ran for a career-high 1,387 yards as New York averaged 30.4 carries
per game.

This year's Raiders have 128 rushes in six games, or 21 runs per
game - the lowest rate in the NFL. Collins has thrown a massive 140
times in the 15 quarters - an average of 35 per game - since Gannon
was hurt.

So much for Turner's power-running, deep-passing offense.

"I think we're trying to create that balance here," Collins
said. "We've shown we can run the ball real well. I think we'll get
back to running the ball well."

Collins and Turner see this need to run as a chicken-and-egg
conundrum. Teams that win run, like mighty New England or AFC West-
leading Denver, which just walloped Oakland 31-3. Those teams are
either leading games or have defenses stout enough to keep them
close, allowing them to stay within their balanced game plans.

Losing teams don't run, and thus don't have the balanced offense.
They have to abandon the run when their defenses are trampled early
in games.

At least that's what Turner has said after each of the last two
losses, when the Raiders fell behind 21-7 in the first half at
Indianapolis on Oct. 10 and 21-3 before halftime last weekend against
the Broncos.

"When teams have a lead on us, they've sat back in zone (coverage),
and it's tough to get the ball downfield," Collins said. "But that's
what happens, and you'd like to be in more competitive situations at
the end of the game than we've been.

"It's just been tough the past few weeks, because we've gotten down
and had to throw."

Turner has said three times in the past three weeks that he needs
better play-calling to stick with the run. Turner's play-calling
featured Emmitt Smith in Dallas in the early 1990s, Stephen Davis in
Washington in the late '90s, and LaDainian Tomlinson in San Diego and
Ricky Williams in Miami earlier this decade.

Turner's quarterbacks thrived to some degree in those situations,
first Troy Aikman of the Cowboys, then Brad Johnson of the Redskins
and Drew Brees with the Chargers.

"Three or four times in the first half we threw the ball and said,
maybe we would have been better off running the ball here," Turner
said after the loss to the Colts. "We've just got to find a way to
stay in run mode in those situations where it's 50-50 run or pass."

Because of injuries to Tyrone Wheatley and Justin Fargas, Amos
Zereoue is the first run option. He agrees more running will cure
Collins of his turnover troubles.

"Oh, most definitely," Zereoue said. "As a quarterback, you need that
to alleviate some of the pressure defenses bring. You definitely need
the running game. It all starts with the run."

Maybe that's why Collins has failed to start fulfilling the Raiders'
supposedly shrewd move in hiring him.

The Raiders are deeply committed to Collins - a guaranteed $3.7
million in 2005, and three years and more than $12 million in all -
and Turner has said benching him for Marques Tuiasosopo is not an
option.

"I've always come out of it, and I expect to come out of this one,"
Collins said, as resolute as he's been since he arrived in May. "It's
tough, there's no doubt about it. It's not fun."

Didn't we just get rid of a complaining receiver named Jerry?
Only two days after all-time great Jerry Rice got his wish with a
trade out of Oakland, his supposed heir and presumptive leader of the
receiving corps, Jerry Porter, said he also wants out after reading
the team was shopping him around.

"(Shoot), they tried to trade me. So what does that say?" Porter
said, smiling as usual. "What the (expletive). But, what do you do?
They got rid of Rice, got rid of (receiver Tim) Brown. It's a new
regime."

Porter said he read an item in The Sporting News, in the issue that
reached newsstands Thursday, describing the Raiders as having
contacted Cleveland about swapping Porter for underachieving Browns
wide receiver Quincy Morgan. Morgan wound up going to Dallas for
receiver Antonio Bryant.
Raiders brass said the magazine article missed the mark.

"It was completely erroneous," Raiders senior personnel executive
Mike Lombardi said Thursday, without specifically refuting the team
had Porter on the trade market this week.

Just after the trading deadline Tuesday, Cleveland coach Butch Davis
said, "We did not talk to the Oakland Raiders - today."

Porter signed a six-year contract as a rookie in 2000. But according
to his New York-based agent, Joel Segal, Porter has played enough in
his first five seasons to void the final year of the deal, making him
eligible for free agency after this season. Segal declined to say
whether the Raiders have shown an interest in re-signing Porter.

"I'm done," Porter said Thursday. "I've got 10 games here to do
whatever with."

Porter, 26, sees a prime opportunity possibly passing him by. New
coach Norv Turner has said repeatedly of his deep-strike passing
game, "Jerry Porter fits this offense, and this offense fits Jerry
Porter."

Yet Porter is not even the Raiders' leading receiver - his 21 catches
through six games is three behind third slot receiver and converted
quarterback Ronald Curry. He has not caught a touchdown pass this
season.

Yet Porter is undoubtedly being scrutinized - by the almighty Raiders
scrutinizer himself.

"We think that (with) Jerry, it's not a question of developing,"
owner Al Davis said Tuesday. "We think Jerry should be there by now,
and we'll watch that progress as the year goes on."

Porter said he didn't know what to make of Davis' comment.

"In 2003, I was hurt all year," he said, referring to torn stomach
muscles that required surgery both during and after the season. "This
year I thought I would be having a larger role in the offense. I
mean, I play a lot, but I just don't get a lot of balls.

"I probably play about 90 percent of the plays, but I don't get a lot
of balls."

In 2002, his last healthy season before this one, Porter had 24
catches and four touchdowns through six games. He finished that year
with career highs of 51 receptions, 688 yards and a team-leading nine
touchdowns.

Sunday, Porter lost a fumble at the Denver Broncos' 6-yard line after
catching a Kerry Collins pass on his knees and scrambling to his feet.

So this year, his contract year, has been anything but the one he
envisioned, being the Raiders' new "go-to" guy.

"That's what I was thinking," Porter said. "It hasn't turned out like
that, and it makes me look bad because I don't have so many catches
or whatever. But of the balls they've thrown to me, I've probably got
80 percent of them, or whatever."

Turner rolled his eyes and laughed when asked to respond to issues
surrounding the team's latest unhappy receiver.

"Jerry's working hard," Turner said. "I think he's doing a lot of
good things. He's where we are. We're kinda in transition."

Turner noted that Denver felt Porter was such a threat, the Broncos
assigned stud cornerback Champ Bailey to shadow him last weekend.
Turner also acknowledged that Porter has suffered from having passes
thrown from four Raiders quarterbacks (Rich Gannon, Marques
Tuiasosopo, Rick Mirer and Tee Martin) last season and now Gannon and
Kerry Collins this season.

Turner added he'd like to see Porter with the team beyond next
season - despite the receiver's desires to the contrary.

"He's a good football player," Turner said. "Certainly, you want to
keep every guy you can in the same system as long as you can."
