Willie Randolph believes Cliff Floyd and Pedro Martinez deserve All-Star consideration. But the Met manager is not going to be calling Cardinals manager Tony La Russa — who will manage the NL team and decide the back end of the roster — to campaign for his players.
"No, I try to stay out of that. It's tough enough making those types of decisions for managers," Randolph said yesterday. "And I understand from being in a lot of All-Star Games as a coach and a player that you're not going to make everyone happy.
"Obviously I'm going to push for my guys, but I don't think it's appropriate. Unless he calls me and asks my opinion or whatever. I don't believe it's right to call someone and try to push for anyone in particular because it just puts you in a tough spot because there are a lot of guys who probably deserve to make it. If he calls me, we'll talk about it. But I wouldn't call."
Thanks to the fan voting, the Mets will likely also have two starters in Mike Piazza and Carlos Beltran. Actually, Randolph noted he does not like the fan balloting, saying, "I don't think the fans should vote."
Martinez is a strong bet to be chosen, and the ace said on Thursday he would probably go if picked but would defer to Randolph and the trainers if they want him to skip it.
Randolph said yesterday he would not prohibit Martinez from going, saying, "I wouldn't get in the way of that. . . . It's an individual thing. Just tell him, 'Just have fun and be careful, that's all.' "
