The New York Mets head into the All-star break with a 44-43 mark, which is two games behind Philadelphia for the lead in the National League East. The Mets are in fourth place in the division, a half game behind Florida and one game in back of Atlanta.
It's a sharp contrast to last year when the Mets were 40-53 and in last place in the division, 21 games behind the front-running Braves.
On Sunday, the Mets suffered a 5-2 loss to the Marlins at Pro Player Stadium. Shane Spencer had two hits, drove in a run and scored once for the Mets, who dropped the final two contests of the three-game set.
Mike Piazza, who will be the starting catcher for National League in Tuesday's All-star Game, leads the Mets with a .297 batting average and has 16 homers and 40 RBI. Spencer is second with a .295 average.
The Mets start an 11-game homestand on Thursday with the opener of a four-game set versus the Phillies. Following that the Mets will take on Florida and Montreal in two-game sets, and will conclude the stretch at Shea Stadium with a three-game series versus the Braves.
