Davis, Calif. - UC Davis shortstop Ryan Coultas was taken in the 6th round by the New York Mets during the first day of the 2004 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft on Monday.
Coultas, a junior from Ventura, was the only Aggie selected in the first 15 rounds of this year's draft. This past season Coultas batted .337 through the first 27 games before suffering an injury against UC San Diego on April 2 that limited him to pinch-running duty the remainder of the season.
The week prior to his injury, Coultas had his best series of the year, batting .450 (9-for-20) against Grand Canyon University, including a season-best five hits in the series finale. He finished his three-year career batting .345, 10th-best all-time at UC Davis.
"Ryan is an outstanding player with a lot of potential and the Mets saw that by taking him in the sixth round," said UC Davis Head Coach Rex Peters. "Anytime you are drafted in the top 10 rounds, you are certainly considered a prospect. Ryan has worked very hard for what he has accomplished and is a great representative of the student-athlete here at UC Davis."
Last month Coultas was named an All-California Collegiate Athletic Association honorable mention pick after being a first-team selection in each of his first two seasons.
Last season Coultas was drafted in the 13th round of the 2003 MLB Draft by the Chicago Cubs. Rather than begin his professional career, Coultas returned to UC Davis for his junior season and to complete his degree in economics, which he will earn later this month. He is the highest Aggie draft pick since pitcher Justin Reed was a fourth-round selection by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1999 MLB Draft.
UC Davis concluded its 2004 season with a 37-15-1 overall record, including a league-best 32-7-1 record in CCAA play.
