Oops! Sorry.
The Tuesday Night Skate meets at 8:00pm on (you guessed it) Tuesday in front of
Krispy Cremes on 72nd Street between Broadway and Columbus. If you have any
further questions, please feel free to contact me of the listserv at
scrappy907@....
I'd love to attend, but you've left out two critical pieces of information,
my dear friend Jay.
Where and when does it begin?
----Original Message Follows----
The following message comes from Steven Lue who is the leader of the Tuesday
Night Skate. If interested, please remember that the Tuesday Night Skate is
a more advanced skate then Wednesday (almost twice the distance in roughly
the same amount of time). If your interested and feel you can keep up then
please stop by and support the NYC skating community. I will and I hope to
see you there.
Jay Dickens
I just spoke to a reporter from the Metro Channel.
They plan to film next Tuesday's night skate (4/17/01)
for a piece. If you are available, please show up so
we get a decent crowd.
Barrie, she was especially interested in you as she is
the same reporter that interviewed you after you won
A2A.
Hope to see you all there. Spread the word.

Please refrain from posting stuff to this list that is not related to
skating. Furthermore, as the admin of this list, I have a very low
tolerance for stuff that may be construed as demeaning or offensive to
certain people. I have just received emails from a couple of members of
this list telling me that they were shocked to see this pop up in their
email.
As is customary, this is a warning before suspension. Anyone who posts
offensive material to this list will have their list privilege
revoked.

Dave works hard at the plant and spends most evenings bowling or playing
basketball at the gym. His wife thinks he is pushing himself too hard, so
for his birthday she takes him to a local strip club.
The doorman at the club greets them and says, "Hey, Dave, how ya doin?"
His wife is puzzled and asks if he's been to this club before. "Oh no,"
says Dave. "He's on my bowling team."
When they are seated, a waitress asks Dave if he'd like his usual
Budweiser. His wife is becoming uncomfortable and says, "You must come
here a lot for that woman to know you drink Budweiser".
"No, honey, she's in the Ladies Bowling League. We share lanes with them."
A stripper comes over to their table and throws her arms around Dave. "Hi
Davey," she says, "Want your usual table dance?"
Dave's wife, now furious, grabs her purse and storms out of the club. Dave
follows and spots her getting into a cab. Before she can slam the door, he
jumps in beside her and she starts screaming at him. The cabby turns his
head and says, "Looks like you picked up a real bitch tonight, Dave."
Best Personal Regards,

Last weeke 40 skaters took to the streets as we headed up to Riverside Park to
enjoy a beautiful view of the Hudson River. This week we expect even more
skaters to join as we skate to .............. well, you'll just have to show up
to find out. Please remember that we are now meeting on the NORTH side of Union
Square Park. This change of venue has nothing to do with the orange-yellow
discrepancy. Parks & Rec has informed me that they intend to start enforcing
the no-skating ban on the south side and requested that we move north. So come
join us Wednesday night at 8:00.
See you there!

Yo California Rocker,
I read your message with great interest. I am planning to bring a group of San
Francisco skaters, Venice Beach skaters and San Diego skaters to New York at
some time in September. We are going to try to establish new type of national
skating network I was planning to contact and coordinate with all the NYC
skate groups about this later this month.
It seems to me that when you strip away surface, money and power may be at the
root of this problem. A night skate in New York, Manhattan in particular, would
be looked upon as a fantastic promotional opportunity. This is not true for just
skate-related companies. You live and skate in the land of nearly every major
Fortune 500 listed corporation along with their officers and staff who live and
work there. Some of them probably skate with you.
What is happenning to your group is similar to what happenned to one of the
original night skate groups in Detroit. Years ago there was a split in the
group. I'm sure that if you did a little research, nearly every night skate
group has faced this kind of division at some point. This is not necessarily a
bad thing. Some skaters want to let it all hang out and have a fast paced, high
intensity skate experience. Some want to hop from bar to bar (ever been to
Houston?) Most just want to hook up with a great group of people, cruise through
the City and have a great time.
I believe that the S.F. Friday Night Skate really has a life of its own. I am
the central figure, but I once I yell out "LETS GOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!", I really have
little control over what happens.. The skaters respect me and have cooperated
with me because they understand that one person can ruin all of our paradise.
Still there are some skaters that get to the stop points on the route all right,
but how they get there is a mystery even to them.
The forces vieing for control will soon find out that they are not having fun.
When this night skating stuff becomes work, it loses its appeal. Tthe money will
never add up to the energy amd resources it takes to make it really worthwhile.
When there is a serious accident or someone mentions lawsuit, watch the person
who gets the money hair turn grey right in front of your eyes. Fun must be the
focus. That is what makes the experience of skating the streets at night so
addictive. People are not there to be herded like cattle and have rules and
regulations heaped upon them. They can get that at work. We have a Skate
Patrol, but everyone is skate patrol. Everyone needs to feel they are a
important part of this organized chaos in the streets.
You can't control the ambition of others. I would look at the split as more
optons for the skaters. The skaters just want to have a good time. I could be
biased, bit I think that someone should start a skate on Friday night in New
York. Works pretty well for S.F. Paris and Amsterdam.
I hope this helps.
Keep Rollin',
D. Miles Jr.

Dear Mr. Miles:
I moved to the Bay Area of California in 1997, and shortly thereafter, I
read on the Internet (www.cora.org) about your weekly Friday Night Skate in
San Francisco. The first time that I participated, I was hooked. I had
never imagined how much fun it would be to get together with 300 other
skaters and skate through the streets of the most romantic city in the
world. Needless to say, over the next three years, I skated with your group
whenever I could. Not once was there anything but the most incredible
harmony amongst all of us, and it was truly a "love fest" of roller blading.
I think what truly makes the Friday Night Skate an incredible experience
is the very inspiring speech that you give everyone before the skate,
clearly explaining the safety rules. I especially enjoyed the part when you
would say, "When one of us does something bad, people don't say, 'That damn
skater!', but rather, 'Those damn skaters!'", meaning that it's up to each
of us to follow the rules for the common good of all skaters in the city.
In June of 2000, I had the good fortune to move to the greatest city in all
the world, New York City. I quickly took up with the Wednesday Night Skate,
also known as Blade Night Manhattan (I believe), and I had an absolute blast
last summer and early fall skating with hundreds of skaters. Skating
through the streets of San Francisco can't begin to compare with skating
through New York City. In fact, if I may editorialize here, even though I
am a Californian at heart, I must say that in general, the city of San
Francisco can't hold a candle to the Big Apple by any measure.
Incidentally, law enforcement is much more skater friendly here than in
California, I've noticed. I understand that there are a million skaters in
New York, including Mayor Rudolph Giuliani (can you imagine Downtown Willie
Brown on skates?!).
However, at the start the 2001 skating season, which is happening now,
something terrible is happening to upset the joyful experience that has been
Wednesday nights. Apparently, some members of the group have actually split
off to form another group. I'm not sure who's to blame, and a lot of this
is hearsay and "he said, she said", but from what I can gather, two warring
factions are sparring over issues such as routes and control and
incorporation and God knows what else, and I even understand a lawyer has
been hired. This past Wednesday I witnessed the most ridiculous scene that
I could ever have imagined at an open skate-the two factions were dressed in
two different colored shirts-orange for one group, yellow for the other-with
both groups pleading with all of us to join "their" side and "their" skate.
The result was 38 skaters going off in one direction, and eighteen going off
in another. In the past few days, we've all been inundated with a flurry of
colorful emails with various points of view about the controversy.
David, why is this happening? I know that New Yorkers and Californians are
different animals, but the skaters over here are such wonderful people, just
like the skaters on the left coast. In fact, wherever in the world I have
traveled, I have found skaters to be the most wonderful people of all, no
matter where they're from. I've made some dear friends in both the orange
and the yellow groups, and no matter which group I'm skating with, I feel a
sense of loss about not skating with the others. In addition, I feel that
skating together in a large group is a right that we have that can't be
taken away from us, and that nobody should be allowed to regulate it or
incorporate it or control it as long as the skaters are law abiding and as
long as this is still a free country.
Is there anything that we can do about this puerile nonsense? With your
arsenal of skating experience and your extensive dealings with dispute
resolution and with the various levels of city bureaucracy, what would you
suggest? Any chance you might want fly out here and help us become one big
friendly group again a la Jimmy Carter or Jesse Jackson or Henry Kissinger?
Hell, I'll even pay for your round-trip ticket.
Please help us. I don't want to go to another skate and have to choose
between two sets of friends. In the words of the great Pink Floyd,
"Together we stand, divided we fall".

Listen ya'll,
I'm for open discussion and all that. But getting 20 emails a day arguing
for the better platform is just the thing that makes me, and most people I
know, want to be removed from a mailing list.
Please don't let that happen.
I'll be at Union Sq next Wednesday. If anyone wants to skate with me, I'll
won't be wearing a yellow or orange shirt.

No thanks, buddy.
----Original Message Follows----
Hi everyone,
This Wednesday there will be a new skate group meeting on the northern side
of Union Square. We'll meet one half hour earlier than the other groups to
plan our tactics for the evening. Please wear black or urban style
camouflage only - no sissy helmets or pads (unless they have spikes).
Blinking light buttons = NO. Blinding laser pointers = YES.
Our new group will be called, "SKHATERS" and together we'll roll over
anything that gets in our way! We'll ride the route I designate each week
until I say otherwise (so there is no need for deliberation). Our initial
route will consist of a trek into the upper east side where we'll loot and
pillage several wealthy communities. Bring small weapons (roller blades) and
wear backpacks.
Please look forward to upcoming weeks where I will randomly pick an evening,
area, store, or neighborhood to "affect." The SKHATERS are not owned by
anyone and cannot be censored! Two sides? Who cares? Let the skates spread!
We'll see who the high rollers are! Get in line or get out of town! One
group is correct, the other is the skate goat! It's obvious that shifting
weight in the leg of power has thrown things off balance! Skate night is out
of control!
Which reminds me, what if I haven't skated in a while and don't really know
how to stop so well? Will I fit in? And because I'm a little scared of
skating, and intimidated by having to choose a "side", does that mean I
automatically joined the yellow team?

GG,
Last week we had a great time.
When I got there I was a bit worried about what would happen, but it went over
smoothly. Just a few words were exchanged (which were really unnecessary) and
then we took off and had a great time skating.
Please join us. No matter what happens between 'staff' folks, we will skate.
So come on down.
Victor.
P.S. I am not staff of any type. I just want to get people talking so that we
can end this problem.

I haven't attended any skates since last October. I have been reading all the
emails that have been exchanged on the Blade night vs. Wednesday Night skaters
conflict. There aren't that many free activities in NYC. This is a rare
opportunity to do something physically and socially enjoyable. I had so much
fun last year and would like to again this year. Please explain what happens
when I show up next week? Do I have to pick a color squad? I am so confused!!!

True, Tuesday do not have 10 or so staff members but Tuesday is also a
smaller skate which is targeted as more advanced skaters. I think the
great thing behind the Wednesday night skate is that it allows people of
almost all level to skate together.
You may also disapprove of our trying to enforce not running red light,
respecting pedestrians, and trying to keep the group together, but our
main goal is to create a relatively safe skate that is reasonably within
the bounds of the law. I think it is much to the credit of the staff of
previous skate that no one ever got killed on a Wednesday night skate
(*knocking on wood*).
I agree with all of you that yellow or orange shouldn't matter... which
is why we are trying to resolve this issue between the two groups right
now. In an ideal world, none of you would have had to know about that
issue. We (the people in orange) were a bit surprised this week as we
didn't think that there would be an issue this week since we've been
talking with them and they told us they weren't starting until May 2nd.
We didn't want it to be confrontational and proposed that both group
rejoin and skate together. Unfortunately it wasn't so. Maybe the next few
weeks will make it easier.

Let's grow up and go skating, and let's leave politics to the politicians, and skating to the skaters. Period! Yellow or Orange, I wil see you guys next Wednesday....
I think this entire thing is a big waste of time and energy (which could produce far better results if applied to skating).
If the two groups can't get their stuff together then I rather like the idea of splitting command of the skate (previously known as Blade Night Manhattan) between the groups (your suggestion of alternating weeks seems perfect). It is much better then splitting the group because of silly politics (no pun intended). That way we would have a united (*strong*) group skating every Wednesday until the organizers figured out what they need to figure out (you guys would have all Summer ;-).
PS. I would really like to thank the organizers (I've met some of you) for doing such a wonderful job and guaranteeing that I have a great time at least once a week during the warm parts of the year.
The way I understand it, a faction of the staff from last year stole the name. If that faction (sounds so serious doesn't it :) ) included the person who has the password for the mailing list, then they could be subscribing everyone to their new yahoo group.
So I'm not sure if that's true.
Either way, we had a great skate yesterday. Fourty or so people showed up and we had nothing but fun after the initial confrontation between the staff of the two groups.
I'm actually very disappointed with this whole situation. I was hoping that by going to the skate yesteray the "good guys" and the "bad guys" would become "bloody obvious" (hi angie!). But it didn't work out that way. Instead both group's staff showed their worst colors.
Each group's staff has an agenda. They are basically playing politics just like China and the USA. Each one is a little right and a little wrong and is hoping that the other backs down so that they can claim a moral victory. In the end its the people in the middle that are represented by these staff's that lose.
And yes I think this could really hurt the skate. Imagine how confused new skaters are going to be? And after they pick a group (assuming that they are not so turned off by this that they go off on their own) they only get to mingle and meet the people that also choose that group. Again, the only losers in this mess are the skaters.
At the end of yesterday's skate a couple of us were talking and someone pointed out that neither staff has any power. The real power lays with the skaters. But even better then that basic idea, was this idea: alternating weeks-- one week we skate with yellow and the next with orange.
Its not supposed to be a compromise. Instead its a way of showing both groups that neither of them has any power and that we will skate with or without either of them. Once they see that they don't matter, perhaps the heads will deflate, the ego's will be a bygone and we will ALL roll under a new name.
From now on I'm just referring to them as yellow and orange. Neither is blade night manhattan.
What do the 95 people on this list think? Would you be willing to try alternating groups on a weekly basis? Both groups meet in the same place so the only difference would be who's plan do we follow.
Roll on! Victor.

Actually, i can vouch that this new list was created by the same people
who ran the skate yesterday as I manage both the rollerbladers list and
this new list. Essentially, a lot of people told me last night that they
had sent messages to the listbot server and had problems seeing them pop
up on the list. As I taked to listbot this morning, they told me that
they didn't see a problem. As the issue was also raised to me on other
lists I manage on listbot, I figured that it was time to start moving the
lists around to a more stable world (i.e. yahoogoups).
Victor, I agree with you that this split is bad. We're currently trying
to resolve the situation and hope that yesterday's situation will not
reproduce itself. I think I can speak for all the orange shirt folks by
saying that all we want in the world is to organize a fun skate for
everyone, without having any other issues get in the way. I can't speak
for the people who were wearing yellow shirts yesterday but I dare hope
that they see it that way too. Both groups are currently chatting and we
hope we'll resolve this without dragging the rest of the skating
community into it.
Hopefully, we'll resolve that issue soon enough and won't have to expose
the rest of you to the petty weirdness that happened in the process.
