Sunday, June 8 - Bronx River Parkway   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #1997 of 2213 |
This is a beautiful skate through southern Westchester on the traffic-free Bronx
River Parkway. It's a curvy, rolling 7-mile stretch of a 4-lane parkway that is
reserved for cycling and skating for 4 hours every Sunday in the spring and
fall. The road is smooth, the bike traffic is light, and the hills are 'just
right'.

We'll meet at the Bronxville train station (Metro North Harlem Line) at 11AM and
plan to get rolling at 11:15 sharp, since we have to be off the parkway by 2.
From the train station, we'll skate through a park for a couple of miles, take
the parkway to White Plains, skate a path to the Kensico Dam, and return to
Bronxville for lunch. Total distance will be about 22 miles.

If you're traveling by train, take the 10:25 from Grand Central (get your ticket
and meet up with fellow skaters at the information booth at 10:15). It's a
35-minute ride, and round trip off-peak fare is $12.00. The train also stops at
125 St. (Park Avenue) at 10:35. We'll be done in time to catch the 2:25 or 3:25
back to NYC. We’ll also have a car in Bronxville where you can stash your
shoes and bags.

For anybody who wants to bring a bicycle on the train, Leo has provided this
info:
* Bikes require a $5 lifetime bicycle permit purchasable at any
staffed ticket window or by mail. In addition to $5 fee a completed
form required. Usable on MTA Metro-North Railroad, and Long Island
Rail Road. See http://www.mta.info/mnr/html/mnrbikepermit.htm and
http://www.mta.info/mnr/html/getaways/bikerule.htm.

If you're driving, check maps.google.com for directions. Note that they usually
close off the Bronx River Parkway exit off the Cross County Parkway, so you may
have to take some local roads to Bronxville (see
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=199+parkway+road,+bronxville,+n\
y&sll=40.93605,-73.83124&sspn=0.098297,0.159988&ie=UTF8&ll=40.934136,-73.836365&\
spn=0.04915,0.079994&z=14
).

Bring your helmet, wrist guards, sun protection, some water (or buy some in
Bronxville before we take off), and some lunch money.
