SMS Report for Sunday March 16th

The Empire Sunday Morning Skate was back in full effect today.  Congradulations to the 23 skaters who showed up we conquered 23 miles of hard asphault and concreet and nailed three bridges along the way.  Mother Nature smiled on us today and gave us the best skating day thus far this year.  If you didn't find the courage to step outside of your house today shame on you it was a beutifull day, and if you did and missed the skate it truely was your loss.

We started out from columbus circle at 11:00 AM this morning with a few new faces to sunday morning and a few old faces sporting new skates for the new year.  We did a quarter loop in the park to warm us all up, but it wasn't really needed the spring sun was shining down on us warming our skin, and our souls and clearing the cob webs out of our minds in the wee morning hours, it lifted our hears as well as our feet everyone kept cmmenting "I remember my skates being much heavier...".  Our quater loop ended at 72nd st and we criss crossed our way down to 60th and 2nd where we started to hike up the 59th St bridge with Darci sweeping up so we wouldn't loose anyone.  From there we turned our feet south and before we knew it we we're skating over another bridge, this time the polouski and ppl started begging for a deli, stop.

I had something a little special planned, for no one really knew we where heading for my hood.  We stopped into the local corner Deli just accross the street from me.  It was sort of a mild publicity stunt and I wanted to give the my local Deli the buisiness.  But belive it or not when I stopped in just a few minutes ago on my way home to ask he if minding our group stopping by, he was really thrilled to have us.  Other customers from the nieghborhood saw us and we aksing about us. A few of them skaters themselves.  He agreed to let me drop some flyers off with him to give to the ppl who were aksing and to put a post on his commmunity board.  We then skated to the other end of my street and stopped just shortly of getting our feet wet in the east river, relaxed and enjoyed the view for a few minutes amoungst the broken glass and other littler.  Hey it was brooklyn who we trying to kid now, so I might as well be honest about the sceanery.

From there we continued our way south up bedford avenue and into williamsburg to the williamsburg bridge.  We skated over the new bike ramp and although it was crouded it was a major improvement to what the willaimsburg brige used to be like.  The only bad part of the bridg was a bump in the path that fell directly in the shadow of a support beam over head.  Your fearless leader and narator almost took a dive from it himself.  I turned arount warn others of the hazard motioning to slow down and keep thier eyes on the ground.  Unfortutely skating semifor is not universal, as I was pointing out the hazzard to an honored guest from philly she mistook my hand motions as a wave and smiled and waved back and hit the bump head on and ended up hugging the asphault.  Fortunately she WAS wearing her helmet and wrist guards so all she ended up with was a minor raod rash on her arm and knee.

We tore our way through downtoan Manhattan making a brief stop so daniel could but a bandaid on a blister his new pair of speed skates where giving him.  From there was headed up the west side bike path to 72nd st and from there to the west side brewery for beer, food and a massage or two.  ;-)  We left the west side and split up from there going our own ways. Some of us headed over to the park for the dance circle.

Thanks to everyone who showed up that skate wouldn't be anything with out your support. And special thanks to Darci for sweeping this week.  Keep a lookout for Sunday Skate anouncements.  Adam will be emailing me the pics he took this weekend and we will probably be doing another movie skate sometime soon.

Your fearless Sunday Leader
~Super D
