Pick-up Ultimate, Saturdays at 11:30AM on Roosevelt Island. On the grass soccer
field by the tram, which leaves from Second Avenue @ 59 Street. You can also
get to the Island by subway or bicycle.
Hi Ultimate people,
So now that MUD has started up its first ever Summer Recreational league, we've
found ourselves with a few open spots. So we've reopened registration, but only
for the recreational league (competitive league is full). For those who are just
hearing about the league, we play on Saturday afternoons at Inwood Hill park, in
northern Manhattan. More details on the league, and how to register can be found
here:
http://www.manhattanultimate.com/registration.php
Registration will remain open as long as we have open spots (currently have
about 10-15 spots open), so if you'd really like to join up register soon!
/hubert for MUD League Administration
I've only gotten about 4 responses so far, but I'm hoping that more people will turn out. Email me if you're planning on coming. Also, I don't have any cones, so could somebody with cones bring them?
We had a good turnout for pickup on Memorial Day (a fun, spirited 6 on 6, at its peak), and since the weather's supposed to be nice this weekend, let's give pickup another go-round. As in the subject line, it's tentatively scheduled for noon on Saturday at the Dust Bowl (near 97th and 5th).
Email me at eschultz10@... if you are interested in coming so I can get an idea of numbers, or if you have any questions. All ages and levels of experience are welcome. Sunday is also a possibility if there is interest in playing then as well. Once again, email me (not the nycpul group) if you are interested in coming so I can make sure that we will have numbers. Tell your friends.

Sorry for the double-post, took 2 messages before I realized the list was
moderated. Anyways, game is on, starting at noon, come out and enjoy the
weather!

Anyone up for some pickup at the Dustbowl tomorrow? Lets say starting at 11:30,
so that we don't end up going all afternoon. Reply to me privately if you're
coming (late or otherwise) and I'll see if we have enough for a game.

You have all endured a very busy week with the WUDI Draft the final call for MUD. Anyone keeping track knows that UltimateRec has moved to a new field on Saturday afternoons. As Jon "Bandsaw" Ream shared this week, factoring in location and quality, this is the best field I have encountered in NYC. It is just up the road from McCarren Park, down the road from Astoria and a very easy commute for the Manhattan population. We are looking for an 8-12 team division of coed 7 on 7 Ultimate. Early Registration ends tomorrow, May 15th at the low price of $50 (it will then go up to $70)
The UltimateRec Challenge:
If you sign up a team for the summer division and win, we will let you defend your crown free of charge in the fall. Even if the whole team can't make it back in the fall, as long as you are registered with the championship team, we will waive your registration fee.
Flexible Schedules:
We will work with any team that wants to play. If you have a group vacation, out of town tournament, or just feel like taking a week off, we can create a schedule that works for you.
Fun Teams:
We realize that some teams are not looking to win the league and just want to get outside and play this great game. We don't want to have separate leagues but might do two conferences within
the same league to allow the less serious teams a change to play each other more often. That said, the championship will be determined by a single elimination tournament with every team in the bracket.
Field Space for scrimmages or practice:
For teams getting ready for nationals, feel free to contact me if you need space to play.
Thanks for your time everyone. Have a great rest of your evening and don't just think about signing up for UltimateRec, do it. Click this link (www.ultimaterec.com) and register while the getting is good. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.
I was planning to be there.

Hello,
I just moved to Williamsburg and I was wondering about ultimate out
here. I've heard that there's Monday night game, Just wondering what
time and when there's anything else happening.
Thanks,
Amanda
We apologize if you are getting this multiple times.
We wanted to let you know that we will be closing registration for M.U.D. Summer League 2009 by midnight tonight or possibly sooner. There is a good chance we may reach full capacity before then, therefore please register as soon as you can.
NYC Public Ultimate League,
UltimateRec Summer League is now open for registration. We are moving Ultimate
to Saturday afternoons in Long Island City at Queens West Sportsfield in hopes
of an 8-12 team division. Games start June 27th and play every Saturday for 9-10
weeks (depending on our fall schedule).
Here are a few notes about the league:
-Games are 7 on 7 coed with a 5/2 gender ratio
-Long Island City is very easy to get to (first stop on the 7 train)
-We are not a draft league so you can sign up with friends
-All skill levels welcome
-It is a great way for experienced players to get their friends to try ultimate
-We keep statistics and have awards for top players and teams
-We will work with any teams schedule if they need to take a week off for
tournaments
-Soccer is also offered if you would like to play in a soccer league that
doesn't charge $150/player
-Early Bird registration ends May 15th with soccer at $65 and Ultimate at $50.
Don't miss out.
Our website is www.ultimaterec.com.
We are also offering a pickup game tomorrow night if you would like to check out
the field and meet some of the players. You can find this information at
www.meetup.com/ultimaterec. Please join the group so you are up to date on
future announcements. The field is minutes from midtown Manhattan so bring your
gear and give UltimateRec a shot. I will be out there at 6:15 and we will play
until the sun goes down. Come and go as you please.
If you have any questions, please email Cullen at ultimatenewyork@....
Thanks for the generosity a lot of you have already shown with offering discs and donations for the workshop in Nairobi, Kenya.
As I mentioned previously, I'll be offering Ultimate workshops in Kenya to youth from across Africa as a means of promoting peace and development through good governance; eg. spirit of the game. Ultimate has now become a central part of the conference :)
I'm still hoping to receive about 50 more discs so I can give one to each participant to take back with them after the conference and spread Ultimate throughout Africa.
I'm also looking for donations to give each participant a jersey. Donations are tax deductible as my organisation, World Youth Alliance, is a 501(c)3 nonprofit.
If anyone will be at Bell Crack and wishes to bring discs please let me know and I'll track you down! Or, if you live in NY, I'm also happy to meet up with you some evening after work.
THANKS!!!
Mary
ps. If anyone wishes to keep reading, through my initial email I've discovered there is already an Ultimate community in East Africa and some of those players will likely help to run the workshop and hopefully recruit from the youth at the conference to start new teams, join existing ones, and generally make Ultimate in Africa even bigger :) woop woop!
This coming August, Ultimate will be brought to 100 youth in Nairobi, Kenya for the first time!
Last November as I travelled throughout Africa (always bringing my disc with me…) I played Ultimate in many countries teaching how to play and of course Spirit of the Game. The comment that stuck in my mind from one person in Rwanda was: “imagine if Africans, especially African leaders, could learn to call their own fouls and accept the call.”
World Youth Alliance Africa (my organisation...) is hosting a conference in Nairobi, Kenya from Tuesday 4th to Saturday 8th August 2009 on the theme ‘Peace: Our Responsibility for Integral Development’. As part of the conference an UltimateWorkshop will be offered.
What better way to promote peace than through Ultimate and Spirit of the Game? Youth from throughout Kenya and Africa will learn about promoting the dignity of every person as the basis for peace, and hence development. They will also take home with themUltimate and, through playing, make Spirit of the Game part of their local culture and mindset.

I need your help! I am looking to bring 100 discs with me to our Africa Region. They don’t need to be new.If anyone wishes to donate $, it will go towards the cost of providing jerseys for participants in the workshop.Tax deductible receipts can be offered for $ donations, but not for discs.

Westchester Summer league still has spots open. Our coed league has room for women, and our open league has room for men. Head on over to wudi.org to sign up. I've attached our list of common reasons people think they won't be able to play in WUDi, along with responses to those objections:
Top10 reasons
people think they can’t play WUDi:
1) It’s too far away.
Westchester does seem pretty far away to people who live in
Manhattan, Queens, or Brooklyn. But plenty of us choose to make the trek up
there, for the opportunity to play on gorgeous grass fields in one of the most
competitive summer leagues in the country.
2) I don’t have a car.
You don’t need a car! Lots of people drive up to league and
it’s usually pretty easy to find a ride, depending on what time you can get off
work (see number 3 below). If worse comes to worse, you can take the train from
grand central:
You can also use our ride board to connect with people
offering rides.
3) I can’t get out of work in time.
A good rule of
thumb is that if you work in midtown and can get off work by 5 pm, you'll get a
ride almost every time. If you can get off a little before 5, like 4:45, you'll
probably be able to get a ride every time. Plenty of people drive up from the
city and it's just a question if you can get to where they leave from in time.
Midtown is right in the middle, so it's pretty easy to get places. Sometimes
you can even take the subway up to the Bronx to meet someone driving from up
there, which is actually probably the quickest way to get there, as you avoid
all the city rush hour traffic. If you work downtown, like in the financial
district, you may need to get off a little earlier than 4:45.
Getting a ride home is usually even easier. Just head out to
the lot and announce your destination, and there’s always someone heading near
where you live.
4) I don’t know anyone.
You don’t need to know anyone! That’s the fun of playing the
league. We use a draft system. Based on ranking you create yourself, captains
will draft you on a team, and we work as hard as we can to make sure the teams
are equal in skill level.
5) I won’t get drafted.
Everyone admitted into the league gets drafted. You don’t
have to worry about getting on a team.
6) I’m not a good enough player/ I’ll let my teammates down.
WUDi is a fantastic place to learn the game of ultimate from
some of the best players in the world. We have people of all skill levels in
the league, so there is a place for everyone. If you’ve never ever played
before, and want to start out gradually, consider the rec league, which plays
on Thursdays only.
7) I can’t commit to playing enough games.
You don’t have to play all the games! When you sign up for
the league, we will ask you how many games you think you can make, and the
captains will take your attendance into consideration when they draft their
teams, so they won’t end up with a team full of people who can’t come very
much. Just be as honest as you can. Some people, for example, can only play on
Mondays, and can’t make Wednesdays. That’s totally fine!
8) I’m too skilled a player to play leagues.
As noted above, WUDi is known as one of the most competitive
leagues in the country. You’ll have the opportunity to test your skills against
some of the best female and male players in the country, many of whom have
attended college and club nationals multiple times.
9) I’m too young.
As long as you’re over 15, you are eligible to play in the
league, and we always have a few high schoolers every year. You just need your
parent to sign a waiver for you. Again, if you’re very experienced, rec league
on Thursdays may be the best option for you.
10) It’s too expensive.
The draft league costs $75. That might seem like a lot of
money, but for that price you get 22 games on some of the nicest grass fields
in the area, plus an entire day of playoffs. That comes out to about $3 a game.
Plus you get a top-notch wicking jersey.

Good news! Though we are already 2 weeks into registration, there are
still slots available in all three of the WSL 2009 leagues. But the
bad news is that won't last forever. The WSL 2009 registration
deadline is 11:59 p.m. on May 3rd and slots are dwindling, so visit

takes a few minutes to finalize your summer plans for ultimate.

Players, friends, and anyone else willing to contribute to a couple GREAT causes!
As many of you already know, we are holding our annual Amir Lopatin Spirit of the Game Memorial hat tournament tomorrow, SUNDAY, March 29 starting 11 AM where NYCPUL was created by Amir Lopatin, that hallowed patch or earth otherwise known as the "dust bowl" for anyone new to this group. Go to this link: http://nycpul.com/amir_lopatin.html
We are just posting this as a confirmation that... YES, the games will go on tomorrow, despite a chance of passing showers. For anyone familiar with that location, some light rain will create ideal surface conditions by wetting down the dust, but as the saying goes, "be careful what you ask for"... so bring some dry clothes, especially socks, plastic bag for your stuff or any rain gear.
On that note, does anyone have one of those free standing "picnic tents" available? If so, let us know and please bring it out. Even if you cannot make the tourney, let us know as we could likely use it to give some cover if it actually rains.
First off, sorry for any duplicate emails sent to those of you on
multiple frisbee lists. We're just trying to get the word out about
this awesome tournament.
What: Annual Amir Lopatin Spirit of the Game Hat Tournament
When: Sunday, March 29 11AM to 4PM
How much: $25, includes a T-shirt
Where: Upper East Side in Central Park
Who: Frisbee players of ALL LEVELS
Why: It's frisbee, need I say more? Plus your tournament fee will be
supporting two great frisbee organizations which help disadvantaged
youth and attempt to cultivate peace in regions of social and political unrest.
For more information, and to register, visit
http://nycpul.com/ultimatepeace_register.html
Be sure to register soon to ensure yourself a spot. The two
organizations being supported are Disc Abilities www.discabilities.org
and Ultimate Peace www.ultimatepeace.org , two great organizations.
Additional donations are encouraged, but certainly not required.
This is a fundraiser that we are asking all to support, whether or not they are
able to play in the tournament.
The organizations will also be selling discs and other items, as well as holding
raffles to try to meet their fundraising goals. Please bring your wallets!
Did anyone find a GW Hungry Hungry Hippos disc at last week's game at 128th and 3rd? If so, could you please bring it tonight or send me an email at jordan.paul@....
Thanks,
Jordan

Once again and with great enthusiasm we are pleased to announce the 5th Annual Amir Lopatin Spirit of the Game ultimate hat tournament in Central Park. On Sunday March 29, we will gather starting at 11 AM at the familiar East Meadow, also known as the "dustbowl" - the traditional setting for this event. It is also the site where NYCPUL (New York City Public Ultimate League) was born, founded by Amir Lopatin in whose memory we are producing this event. As in past years, players will be randomly assigned to teams to play spirited and competitive ultimate in a hat tournament format. In addition, this year we will have a regulation disc golf baskets for pitch and putt games, and we have even invited "frisbee dogs" to this event. This event is open to players of all levels, and as in past years it is also a family event, so bring the kids and plan for a picnic.
As an additional incentive to participate this year, we have identified two very deserving organizations to be beneficiaries of this event. Please check out "Ultimate Peace " at http://www.ultimatepeace.org/ a unique organization that uses ultimate to build bridges of friendship and understanding for youth from different social and cultural backgrounds, and "Disc Abilities " at http://www.discabilities.org/ that applies specially designed disc activities to benefit at risk youth and kids who face physical and developmental challenges.
We encourage you to register and donate even if you are not an ultimate player or not sure you will be able to attend, as your donation will go to support a fundraising effort that will make a difference for those who really need and deserve your support. To that end, we left the online donation field open, so feel free to donate any amount. All those who donate at a minimal recommended level of $25 will receive an event tee shirt. In addition, representatives from Ultimate Peace will be on hand to sell discs to further support their mission to send players to Tel Aviv on April 5th.
