I'm moving to Brooklyn in a couple of weeks and I'm looking for any details or
directions
to some pick-up, indoor or outdoor. Anything going on? I know it's a bit late in
the year
and all, but maybe I'll get lucky?
hey.
I'm often too lazy to haul myself all the way to Central or Prospect
parks just to get some pickup in.
Anyone live on Staten Island???
If you're interested please reply. There's an adequate size field
at Silverlake Park near the North Shore. I'm thinking Sunday
afternoons. I'll let you know when I hear from enough folks.
cheers.

All,
Please forgive the SPAM, but I want to make sure I
reach as much of the NYC Ultimate community as
possible.
The Amir Lopatin NYCPUL is in need of several graphic
designs for this years' league jerseys, and, possibly
a disc. If you, or anyone you know is willing to
donate their talents for this, please let me know via
email (branto@...) , or AIM (id: branto).
Once the designs are submitted, a poll within the
NYCPUL group will be created to determine the winning
design. Look for this in the next 2 weeks.

Hello all,
My name is Hadi and I have been playing in the dustbowl on
and off for the past 2 or 3 years. I have always had a blast, and I
figured I should join this group. I have been looking around online
everywhere, and I finally found you guys!!! I don't know if any of you
remember me, but I am currently studying abroad for the year in London
and will be back in NYC this summer starting June 1st. For the past
few years I have always been "too late" in signing up for league play
and being on teams well this year I am not going to let that happen. I
am so pumped to play some quality central park ultimate and eat some
tasty watermelon under the sun and hang out with all you people.
Please let me know how I can jump on a team for this years NYCPUL
summer league and whatever else is going on...
Cheers and beers from London,
Hadi
Can anyone give me information about summer leagues in
NYC? I played Ultimate in college but haven't played since I
moved to the city last year.
Thanks,

Howdy,
Last Thursday night myself and fireman Bob checked out the East
Meadow at 97th and 5th. The field was mostly free at 6 and totally
open by 6:30. I'd like to get a game going at 6 on Thursdays so
whoever is down please come tomorrow. Weather forecast says 70 and
sunny...
Thanks,
David Weinberg.
Hello All,
I am Amir's older brother, and I am touched and gratified by the
sentiments some of you have expressed in this group re:commemorating
my brother. If you should decide to do so, in any way shape or form,
please contact me. My family and I would be very happy to continue
to support an effort my brother poured so much of his love and
efforts into, and we would be honored to see his name attached to
something he loved.
Peace,
Uri Lopatin

Please contact me asap if you are interested in playing Spring League
and are not yet on a team.

Hey all,
I posted a few pix from a practice last May in the Yahoo group.
They're in the album May 2003, which you should be able to
reach from http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/nycpul/lst. I
have quite a few more, but the group has reached its photo
storage limit. I'll post the rest once there's more room. I'm
hoping to get out and shoot some more games this season.
Enjoy.

I am shocked and saddened to learn of Amir's passing. He was an all around great guy who will truly be missed. The NYCPUL league he created brought summer league ultimate to Manhattan for the first time in years. It was so much fun to play in the league and it wouldn't have happened without Amir's vision, dedication and hard work. Amir worked long and hard to create NYCPUL and it would be a shame if this league ended.
I was under the impression that when Amir left town, someone else had taken over the running of NYCPUL and that there would be a league this summer. Whether this is the case or not, I think the best way to honor Amir is to keep NYCPUL going and to rename the league in his honor.
HI all,
I played NYCPUL for the 2 years it existed. The first
year AMIR was on the same team as me. He did do a lot
for Ultimate in Manhattan by creating this league, as
Rocky said previously.
He was always very nice to everyone and worked hard to
keep the league together. I remembered how he tried
to give the encroaching soccer players beer to get off
our field, for the 2nd year finals i believe. I think
that's how i will remember him...smiling and trying to
make everyone happy.
If we do have a NYCPUL summer league this year, it
would be good to memorialize him in some way.
Respectively,
Chris Pae, 7Express!

Hi,
I regret to inform you of the passing of Amir Lopatin,
founder of NYCPUL. Amir was killed in a tragic car
accident near Las Vegas on March 25, 2004. He was 28
years old. Amir left his job as a computer programmer
in New York to pursue a PhD in Education Technology at
Stanford. He is survived by his mother, older brother
and sister, and many friends and family.
I was Amir's girlfriend and I know how much he loved
ultimate and how proud he was of NYCPUL. Please
consider renaming the league in his honor in order to
keep his memory, as well as his virtues of love and
dedication, alive.
Thank you

I know his family would deeply appreciate any stories or pictures you can
share.

Thank you all for your sentiments about Amir. It has meant so much to me and his family. A website has been set up in his honor at www.amirlopatin.com. If anyone wishes to contribute memories or pictures of Amir, please email them to admin@....
I recommend forming committee to make the Annual Amir Lopatin Central Park
Ultimate Frisbee tournament a reality. Our goals would be:
to secure permits for a given number of weekends in Central Park.
to design and order discs and tee-shirts.
to provide a special form of remembrance at such an event.
It is pretty simple, and a very obtainable goal.
I believe there will be enough support for this to make it a reality.
We also need to determine a schedule, dates and times...
A number of us have already been through the permit process.
I will help however I can.

Amir was a great guy. We should honor his memory by creating an Annual Ultimate
Frisbee tournament.
We should produce custom discs and tee-shirts.
I say we do it this year and start getting the necessary permits immediately.
I am so sorry to hear this tragic news. If I may, I have a few NYCPUL memories to share:
I was so glad when Amir created NYCPUL several years ago. It was a pleasure to have an organized ultimate league here in the city, since like most people I was used to playing pickup in the dustbowl in Central Park atop rocks and glass and whatnot.
Amir put a great deal of effort into getting the playing field and organizing the league, both tough tasks in NYC. I know many people (myself included), really enjoyed playing organized ultimate for the first time in a long time. I still have my t-shirt from the first season and will think of Amir whenever I wear it on the field.

To The Members of NYCPUL,
Hello, my name is Tsvi. I am a friend and former roommate of Amir
Lopatin, of blessed memory. I lived with Amir for much of time
during which he invested in building the NYCPUL into what it is
today. I remember how enthusiastically and energetically he spoke
of his love for the league that he was part of and developing in
NYC. I recall his campaign of creating t-shirts for the league, the
times he sat by his computer working on the league and thinking of
ways to improve the league, and I even recall some of the many faces
of the ultimate league circle that entered his life outside of the
field. The reason why I have chosen to communicate with the league
is that I wish to recommend that the league honor the memory and
life of Amir by changing its name to the AL-NYCPUL, The Amir Lopatin
New York City Public Ultimate League, or perhaps through the
creation of a tournament in his memory. I am sure that Amir would
have derived much pride and pleasure in knowing that his name was
commemorated by the institution that he valued so much, and I cannot
think of a more appropriate action given his instrumentality in
creating and founding the league. On a more technical side, I have
been instructed by the Lopatin family to suggest that a donation
would gladly be provided to the NYCPUL to facilitate the
commemoration of Amir in the league. If any of you would like to
communicate with me, or to pass anything along to the Lopatin family
through me, please feel free to do so.
Thank You,
Tsvi

Amir has always been so enthusiastic......I think that one of the best things I could say about him, about anyone I would play with, is that he never got angry with people, never took it personally if a call was made against him, or didn't go his way. I felt like he always gave me his best game.

Hey, my name is Sam and I've been down in NC going to Wake Forest
University. I just graduated and I'm moving back into Manhattan. I
never played ultimate in NY so I'm not sure how to get going in the
league or with pickup games, etc. If anyone can help me out... I'll
be back in NYC around June or July. I'd really appreciate it. I'm
going to try to check back here every few days for a reply but if
you could email me that would be best. sammy_bighead@...
Thanks a bunch. Hope to play with all of you soon!

It is a terrible loss for the Ultimate community. No one had done more in recent years to raise the level of play and visibility of Ultimate in Manhattan than Amir. His enthusiasm and passion for the game was virtually unrivaled both on and off the field. The anguish that his family and those that were close to him must feel is unfathomable. Perhaps, in time, they might find some small comfort knowing how this will be shared by some of those that did know him. So I echo Josh’s call for a tribute from those that wish to write something in his honor.
I am very sorry to pass on this news, from the nycultimate list. I played in
nycpul the first year Amir organized the league and he did a great job. He
was a good player and had lots of spirit.
