We are anticipating decent conditions in the East Meadow (98th and 5th
Ave, aka dust bowl) this weekend after a few days of dust-settling
showers. Games start 2 p.m. If you show up earlier, please claim a
field before the soccer or football players arrive!
On Saturday in particular, we ask that all players respect the following
concepts:
During the first half of the afternoon, from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m., the games
will be played with a sensibility epitomized by the "Nomad" spirit with
an emphasis on encouraging new players, giving a priority to having fun
over open competition, and a relaxed application of the UPA rules, such
as not necessarily enforcing stall count or dropped pulls, etc.
AND
After 4 p.m. games will be played more consistently to UPA rules along
the lines of "open" club level, with a standard 10-count stall, dropped
pull = turnover and sides distinguished by lights and darks.
With this distinction we hope to foster the best of both worlds on
behalf of those on the one hand who wish to play casually for fun and
for those on the other who desire a more competitive game to challenge
their skills to play at their personal and collective best.
So, if you are not a competitive player, please show up early and get
some practice in with players who will respect that you are learning,
players who will hopefully show by example how to improve your game. If
you are confident to play with the more high level players you will
certainly be welcome, and it will certainly bring your game to the next
level, but be prepared to play by the rules.
If you are a more competitive player, you are welcome to show up early,
but be ready to cut some slack to the less experienced players, keep the
stall count to yourself, that is until 4 p.m. After 4 p.m., be prepared
to go to lights and darks, play to UPA 10th edition, and don't even try
to catch that pull if you are not sure that you can bring it in, because
if you drop it, it will be a turn over.
This is not a hard and fast rule, but rather a spirit of understanding that we
hope will provide a workable compromise for the various groups that play pick-up
ultimate in the East Meadow.
