Hello potential NYCPUL'ers,
It is fast approaching the time when the NYC parks officially open
for the spring and once again I am confounded by the continued
incompetence of the Parks Department. I submitted a permit
application in january and was told I would have a response by the
end of february. February came and went and I was assured that I
would have a response by the end of march. Well that came and went
too and still there is no official permit. All is not lost though
because at least now it finally seems that someone is working on
getting us some field space. In fact, I have verbal confirmation of
a permit for the turf-soccer field in chelsea from april 13th-may 4th
( 6 - at least 8:30 pm on sundays) and we should have our trump
permit agian from June until the end of the summer (trump is closed
from april till june for resodding). While this chelsea permit is
clearly not enough time nor space to run a league with, I am
hesistant to pass it up because I am sure we can do something good
with it. Anywas here are the options I am thinking about and I am
interested in feedback:
1) running a very long season (end of april- august) using a
combination of Chelsea park, trump park and the east meadow(which I
assume is very easy to get permits for)
2) running a shorter league in mid June-through early september and
using the chelsea paermit either for :
a)pay for play pick-up (2-3$/person/day)
b)a mini single elimination tournament with 4 teams (50$ /team)
Week 1: pickup..
Week 2: teams 1v2
Week 3: teams 3v4
Week 4: winner week 1 vs winner week 2
I think it would be cool if we could form these teams from the 4
major pickup areas in/around NYC:
Team 1: -Central park players
Team 2: -East river park players
Team 3: -Prospect Park players
Team 4: -NJ/misc. players
I think this would be kind of fun to have a bragging rights
tournament like the mets/yankees have during exhibition.
Anyways, here is what I need from you guys now. Please respond to the
poll I am about to put up so that I can gauge interest in the above
options. Also, please contact me if you think you are someone who
could effectively put together a team from your local pickup
community. Although, it is not definite that this tournament will
happen it is neccessary to get a move on because the first round
would be in only two weeks.
I also need volunteers who can help me with the following:
-design a new logo for this season
-help me figure out how to incorporate NYCPUL
-captain during the regular season.
-Field marshal. I did a terrible job running things on field last
season so I am looking for one or more alpha-male type personalities
to take-over those responsibilities.
