RE: [NYCAdGeekBikers] Ride this weekend?

I dont think the rim is warped but uneven tension is likely. I used to be a bike mechanic in HS and college but don't have the time, tools, or space to do anything other than the most basic repairs these days. Didn't deal with a lot of broken spokes when I was a wrench so thx for the info.

Regarding your spoke...even if you have a cassette puller, it is recommended (unless you are a well experienced technician) to have this done by a professional.   You probably broke the spoke due to your wheel being unevenly tensioned or due to a warp in your rim pulling at that spoke.

Spokes will wear out over time, but usually in a decently maintained bike if they fail it is a fault of the wheel not be true or by way of an accident.  This means you need to be careful adding in the new spoke to make sure the rim is nicely trued or you will might end up breaking the replacement spoke as well in short order.

I learned this lesson the hard way with an old bike of mine

Good luck on your cert this weekend.

PS unless the shop can fix the broken spoke on my ride before this weekend, I'm probably not in action. How does one break a spoke anyway? I broke it by the cassette otherwise I'd fix it myself. I dont have a cluster removal tool. or a big vise to hold it.

So Peter,

That's the equivalent to being certified as insane, right?

I'm actually going for my licensing certification test this weekend for skydiving... (Geeky photo attached.) Will be out this weekend, but count me in next.
