Not sure this reached everyone, as I have had NO responses!! We need club volunteers for this ski show in Portland, in the NWSCC Booth. I need to complete the registration list by Oct 15th. Appreciate hearing from you soon---it's a great way to get into the show free and meet people.
It's SKI SHOW time in Portland!! We are looking for club volunteers to staff the NWSCC booth. All clubs in NWSCC are welcome to have club flyers/brochures in the booth---even if they do not have volunteers for the show. All the details below. Please get back to me ASAP, as I need to complete the Volunteer List by October 15th.
SHOW:
Portland SkiFever & Snowboard Show
Portland Expo Center
2060 North Marine Drive
Portland, OR 97217
503-736-5200
DATES of SHOW:
Thursday, October 30: 1:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Friday, October 31: 1:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Saturday, November 1: 10:00 am - 10:00 pm
Sunday, November 2: 10:00 am - 6:00 pm
BOOTH DETAILS--------NWSCC is BOOTH #131 (subject to change at last minute):
10' x 10' booth space, back & side drape, 8 foot table, two chairs, carpeting. Typically, we like the booth set up with the table up against one side of the booth---so that people can actually walk into the booth---the table should not be sitting horizonatly in the booth and we do not want volunteers behind the table. It's easier to engage people if the booth has that open feeling.
Booth space is reserved for only those clubs who have paid dues in NWSCC---any club can have their flyers at the booth. Remember---we only have an 8 foot table to share with all the clubs for NWSCC---please be conscientious of how much club material you bring. Somehow, it's all got to fit on one table----and hard telling how much stuff we'll have until we all get there. Clubs usually bring a flyer or brochure about membership, and/or a flyer listing your club activities (please do not bring separate flyers on all your trips----takes up too much space). If room for photo albums, they may be used also. If you have any of those nifty plastic things that stack up and consolidate the holding of flyers---great!
Working in the booth is fun---you get to tell people all the great reasons for joining a ski club. Volunteers will represent NWSCC as a whole and ALL clubs of NWSCC (not just your own club). You will speak mostly on behalf of the Oregon clubs, but remember there are some in Washington as well. You will promote the benefits of joining a ski club in general (great trips, make new friends, see new places, etc), pass out flyers on club membership/trips, and pass out NWSCC Skiers Directories and NWSCC related flyers. You will find even if you are not that well-versed on all the clubs and such, that it's pretty easy & fun to answer questions (and you can find alot of the answers in the Skiers Directory!).
MOVE-IN:
Move in begins Tuesday, October 28, 8:00 am to 10:00 pm; Wednesday, October 29, 8:00 am to 10:00 pm; Thursday, October 30, 8:00 am to 10:00 am. NWSCC board members will basically decorate the booth on Wednesday night. Clubs just need to drop off their flyers/brochures during these hours if they want their materials from the opening of the show. Many clubs may not bring their items until Sat afternoon or so----when someone from their club works a shift. The people working the first shift, and thereafter, will arrange the table---it's a work in progress as more club stuff arrives. We do the best we can with all that shows up. I will personally be at the show setting up on Wednesday night about 7:00 pm.
MOVE-OUT:
Move out begins Sunday, October 26, 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Each club needs to make arrangements for the removal of their club items (or talk to Mary Olhausen).
ADMISSION TO SHOW:
Volunteers in the NWSCC booth will get FREE admission to the show, the day of their shift. You may arrive when the show opens and leave when it closes, working your shift in-between. Admission to the show is only possible by me FAXING your names to the show management ahead of time. I'll need all the volunteer names no later than October 13th. Please provide to me, your full name, club name, phone numbers, and email address. You will pick up your badge and/or ticket at the WILL CALL DESK (located at the front entrance). PLEASE do NOT pick up any other volunteers' badges----only your own. Your club ID badge will be critical when picking up your show tickets.
BADGES--NAME TAGS:
Entrance into the Expo will be smoothly facilitated IF you where your club badge. PLEASE make sure you wear your club name badge at all times during the show.
PARKING:
Parking is not paid for volunteers.
VOLUNTEERS' SHIFTS:
We would like two people per shift. For each person who volunteers, I need full name, club name, phone number, & email address (send email to Mary Olhausen):

This is urgent. If interested, you need to act right away! (OK, sleep on it one night, if you must!!!!). But respond by July 15.
Here's an opportunity to enjoy an affordable visit to Shining Mountain, America's largest ski area! Shining Mountain is the name the UTE Indians gave to the mountain we now know as Vail.
When asked where they want to ski on club trips, one of the most named destinations is Vail. However, peak-season prices are some of the priciest anywhere. Lift tickets sell for $71. Ouch!
But Steve Coxen, the NWSCC Chairperson, has put together an amazingly affordable trip to Vail for this coming December 9 - 14, 2003. Almost everything is included in the total price of only $700 for 5 nights and 4 days. This includes:
- 5 nights lodging at the Enzian Lodge (3 bedroom, 3 bath)
(or an optional upgrade to the exceptional
Landmark Towers (2 bedroom, 2 bath)
for $50 per person more)
- 4 days all-day lift tickets at Vail
- Airfare to Denver from Portland (or Seattle)
- Ground transportation from Denver to Vail
- NWSCC Party !!!
THIS IS A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY!!!
Just imagine: All of Vail, but without the crowds! You have to ski Vail to believe its size.
1. The famous back bowls are 6 miles wide! Powder, powder, powder!
2. The new Blue Sky Basin is a whole new mountain on the back side, opened for the 2000 winter season. Its famous Cloud 9 trail includes tree skiing on groomed snow!
3. Total of 33 lifts, covering 5,289 acres.
4. One gondola and 14 high-speed quads!
5. Maximum vertical is 3,450 feet.
6. The base village is at an elevation of: 8,120 feet.
7. The summit is at an elevation of: 11,570 feet.
Will there be enough snow? Well, statistically, the mountain has been receiving an average of 61 inches of snow in November. That's 5 feet of snow! And then another 60 inches of snow in December. So, it's reasonable to expect at least 5 or 6 feet of snow by mid-December.
If you ever plan to visit Vail, this is a good time to do it. Not only is the price reasonable, but, like Warren Miller says: "If you don't do it this year, you'll just be a year older when you do!"
Also, for PACRAT racers, keep in mind that this year we will most likely not have a race in December. So, your whole month of December is free for trips just like this one.
BUT YOU MUST ACT QUICKLY!!!
The airlines have very strict deadlines for group reservations, so a deposit is needed immediately! If you want to go on this trip, here's what to do:
Send a $50 deposit (per person) - due immediately - in the form of a check made payable to NWSCC, and mail it to Steve Coxen, 620 N. Hayden Bay Drive, Portland, OR 97217. (Full payment will be due by October 1, 2003).
For more information, call Steve at 503-285-7491 or email SteveCoxen@....

PACRAT racers will have their last race of the season on Saturday (April 5). Come race or come cheer our racers! Far West Race Championships will be held. The last PACRAT race will be held on the same day (Saturday). Because the Far West racing rules are a bit stricter, and the number of racers larger, make sure to give the Far West race a priority. The PACRAT rules will be relaxed and more flexible, to allow everyone to do both races on the same day. For example, members of the same PACRAT team will not be required to race at the at the same time. There will be at least 6 separate courses set up for each of the Far West races. Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced racers will race on entirely different courses, set up on different slopes on the mountain. The information will be posted in the lodge at registration time. Make sure you go to the correct race course for your category at the appointed time. Races usually proceed at a fast pace, faster than our PACRAT races. So, don't be late showing up at the starting gate. Racers will be divided into 2 gender groups, 2 age groups (21- 44; and 45 and over), and 10 ability levels. You only compete against people in your own category. Far West race courses are usually 2 or 3 times longer than our average PACRAT course. The Slalom course may average about 1 minute and a half. The Giant Slalom may be as long as 2 minutes. Usually, as soon as a racer is mid-way down the course, they let the next racer go. So, if you fall in the race course, get out of the way quickly!

Northwest Ski Club Council (NWSCC) would like to thank everyone for their response to the recent e-mail concerning “Friends of Cooper Spur Mountain Resort.”While the majority of the comments were in support of the group’s efforts, we did receive a few negative remarks. Most of these noted an opinion about keeping Mt. Hood undeveloped; however, there were several that criticized the political nature of the e-mail.
It should be understood that the "Friends of Cooper Spur Mountain Resort" is an organization whose members are users of winter recreation areas on Mt. Hood.Northwest Ski Club Council shares this constituency. At no time in the history of organized skiing in the State of Oregon have the skiers (Alpine or Nordic), snowboarders, or other recreational users of Mt. Hood had a voice in influencing the development on the mountain.Environmental organizations have a long, successful history. The voices of the developers are certainly heard.Where have we, the user, been?
It needs to be understood that "Friends of Cooper Spur Mountain Resort" has not been created to act in opposition to the efforts of any environmental group. On the contrary, the environment is a huge concern of the "Friends of Cooper Spur Mountain Resort"----they are in existence to give people and organizations like your ski clubs and their members a voice, whether you are pro-development or no-development.NWSCC supports any and all efforts to provide safe, fun, environmentally sustainable settings where we can enjoy ALL of the winter sports we love, anywhere in the Northwest. To that end, we will continue to make our club members aware of the activities of organizations like the "Friends of Cooper Spur Mountain Resort". We leave it up to you, the clubs and club members, to make the decision whether or not to support those activities. No board member of NWSCC will represent the views of his/her individual club & it's membership, and will not use their leadership position of their individual club, without permission from their club(s).
From FRIENDS of COOPER SPUR MOUNTAIN RESORT:
Friends of Cooper Spur request your support to attend a public hearing on Jan 22, 2003, 7:30 pm at the Best Western Hood River Inn. The meeting is held in order to take public testimony regarding its Goal 8 mapping. The outcome of this project will determine the sites in Hood River County where destination resorts will be allowed under Goal 8. While Cooper Spur Mountain Resort has not turned in a formal proposal to the county, Goal 8 mapping process will have an important role in determining how and when Cooper Spur resort will apply for approval. If the county maps the former Inn at Cooper Spur property as eligible, which we believe is appropriate, then it will indicate the county's support for a destination resort at Cooper Spur Mountain Resort. The developer will still have to go through a Conditional Use permitting process which will allow everyone an opportunity to debate the plan.
Friends of Cooper Spur are providing transportation (two locations to board the bus) to Wednesday's hearing in Hood River:
Please call in your reservations to ride the bus to 503-287-5438.
