Subject: Fw: Extraordinary NWSCC ski trip to Vail !

Dear Skiers:
NWSCC Presents VAIL
This is urgent. If interested, you need to act right away! (OK, sleep on it one night, if you must!!!!). But respond by July 15.

Here's an opportunity to enjoy an affordable visit to Shining Mountain, America's largest ski area! Shining Mountain is the name the UTE Indians gave to the mountain we now know as Vail.
Vail Powder Skier
When asked where they want to ski on club trips, one of the most named destinations is Vail. However, peak-season prices are some of the priciest anywhere.  Lift tickets sell for $71. Ouch!

But Steve Coxen, the NWSCC Chairperson, has put together an amazingly affordable trip to Vail for this coming December 9 - 14, 2003.  Almost everything is included in the total price of only $700 for 5 nights and 4 days. This includes:

- 5 nights lodging at the Enzian Lodge (3 bedroom, 3 bath)
(or an optional upgrade to the exceptional
Landmark Towers (2 bedroom, 2 bath)
   for $50 per person more)
- 4 days all-day lift tickets at Vail
- Airfare to Denver from Portland (or Seattle)
- Ground transportation from Denver to Vail
- NWSCC Party !!!

THIS IS A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY!!!
Just imagine: All of Vail, but without the crowds!  You have to ski Vail to believe its size.

1. The famous back bowls are 6 miles wide! Powder, powder, powder!
2. The new Blue Sky Basin is a whole new mountain on the back side, opened for the 2000 winter season. Its famous Cloud 9 trail includes tree skiing on groomed snow!
3. Total of 33 lifts, covering 5,289 acres.
4. One gondola and 14 high-speed quads!
5. Maximum vertical is 3,450 feet.
6. The base village is at an elevation of: 8,120 feet.
7. The summit is at an elevation of: 11,570 feet.

Will there be enough snow?  Well, statistically, the mountain has been receiving an average of 61 inches of snow in November.  That's 5 feet of snow!  And then another 60 inches of snow in December. So, it's reasonable to expect at least 5 or 6 feet of snow by mid-December.

If you ever plan to visit Vail, this is a good time to do it.  Not only is the price reasonable, but, like Warren Miller says: "If you don't do it this year, you'll just be a year older when you do!"

Also, for PACRAT racers, keep in mind that this year we will most likely not have a race in December. So, your whole month of December is free for trips just like this one.

BUT YOU MUST ACT QUICKLY!!!
The airlines have very strict deadlines for group reservations, so a deposit is needed immediately!  If you want to go on this trip, here's what to do:

Send a $50 deposit  (per person) - due immediately - in the form of a check made payable to NWSCC, and mail it to Steve Coxen, 620 N. Hayden Bay Drive,  Portland, OR 97217.   (Full  payment will be due by October 1, 2003).

For more information, call Steve at 503-285-7491 or email SteveCoxen@....
Also, visit Vail's web site at www.vail.com.

The last PACRAT race will be held on the same day (Saturday).  Because the Far West racing rules are a bit stricter, and the number of racers larger, make sure to give the Far West race a priority.  The PACRAT rules will be relaxed and more flexible, to allow everyone to do both races on the same day. For example, members of the same PACRAT team will not be required to race at the at the same time.   There will be at least 6 separate courses set up for each of the Far West races.  Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced racers will race on entirely different courses, set up on different slopes on the mountain.  The information will be posted in the lodge at registration time. Make sure you go to the correct race course for your category at the appointed time.  Races usually proceed at a fast pace, faster than our PACRAT races. So, don't be late showing up at the starting gate.  Racers will be divided into 2 gender groups, 2 age groups (21- 44;  and 45 and over), and 10 ability levels. You only compete against people in your own category.    Far West race courses are usually 2 or 3 times longer than our average PACRAT course.  The Slalom course may average about 1 minute and a half.  The Giant Slalom may be as long as 2 minutes.  Usually, as soon as a racer is mid-way down the course, they let the next racer go.  So, if you fall in the race course, get out of the way quickly!

Bend, Ore. — February 25, 2003 –Continuing a strong, growing relationship with Oregonians with disabilities, Mt. Bachelor is again hosting the Oregon Special Olympics Winter Games on Saturday and Sunday, March 1 and 2, 2003.

Mt. Bachelor has hosted the Winter Games every season since 1982.  During the two-day event more than 300 athletes will compete in a variety of Alpine and Nordic races near the West Village Lodge and Nordic Center.  Mt. Bachelor employees do more than just set up slope fences and race courses for the games.  Besides donating all lift tickets and Nordic Trail Passes, Mt. Bachelor donates employee time from every department for making lunches for the hundreds of Special Olympians, coaches and volunteers.

Reaching beyond the Special Olympics, in recent years Mt. Bachelor has expanded its employment program to include participants from the Opportunity Foundation of Central Oregon (OFCO).  Through OFCO and the State of Oregon Vocational Rehabilitation Services department, Lodge Services Manager Jim Pierce employs numerous Oregonians with disabilities during the ski season.  Working independently, these employees are responsible for stocking supplies for resort guests’ use, clearing tables in cafeterias and maintaining resort bathroom facilities.  Starting with one full-time employee two years ago, this program has grown to three full-time employees during peak season.

Mt. Bachelor also offers many recreation opportunities for guests with physical and mental challenges outside of the Special Olympics.  Working closely with Oregon Adaptive Skiing (OAS) volunteers, Mountain staff provides instruction and assistance for guests who sometimes need a little extra attention.  More than 15% of the 125 Mt. Bachelor ski and snowboard instructors have experience working with disabilities of all varieties.  In addition to discounted Adaptive lift tickets, the Mountain and OAS share the use of special equipment, such as Sit-Skis with outriggers, for guests who need more than just the normal ski or snowboard gear.

The Mt. Hood Cultural Center and Museum - SKI THE GLADE DAY - March 1, 2003

Do you remember when the last run of the day from Timberline took you all the way to Government Camp? “Let’s take the Glade” was a familiar call for years to many, many skiers on Mt. Hood. Years have passed, however, since the Glade Trail has been open to recreational skiers, but the memories live on!

The Mt. Hood Cultural Center and Museum, in cooperation with the Forest Service, is presenting

"Ski the Glade Day", a Museum fundraising event March 1, 2003. This unique opportunity will allow skiers to relive the unique experience of skiing the Glade Trail and introduce new skiers to this historical activity.   Ski the Glade Day will include a continuous shuttle to Timberline, groomed trail, local trail guides, ski patrol services, a hearty lunch at the Museum, an après ski party, an action photo, and much more!   This event is organized under a special use permit from the USDA Forest Service, Mt. Hood National Forest and in partnership with Timberline Lodge. Luxury Accommodations is providing shuttle service, and special ski equipment rental packages are available from Valians’ Ski Shop.

Space is limited and reservations are required, so don’t miss the opportunity to “Take the Glade” once again. Event tickets are $150 each, of which $100 is tax deductible. Call the Museum at 503-272-3301 with your name, address, phone number, and number of reservations to hold your spot. Proceeds from the Ski the Glade Day fund raiser will directly support operations at the Museum.

Hi Friends,
Due to lack of snow, the 6th annual Scotty Graham Memorial X-Treme Competition for Skiers and Snowboarders will NOT be held this year at Mt. Hood SkiBowl.  Instead, Timberline has come forth and is hosting us as a part of the annual Windell's Timberline Classics Series on Sunday, February 23.  The Fund will receive an undecided portion of the proceeds.  This is a slopestyle event open to all ages.  If there is enough snow at SkiBowl, we will hold the "Speed Trap" event on Saturday.  Otherwise we'll have an innertube race.

Subject: Cooper Spur--Please Read to Understand More

Northwest Ski Club Council (NWSCC) would like to thank everyone for their response to the recent e-mail concerning “Friends of Cooper Spur Mountain Resort.”  While the majority of the comments were in support of the group’s efforts, we did receive a few negative remarks.  Most of these noted an opinion about keeping Mt. Hood undeveloped; however, there were several that criticized the political nature of the e-mail.

It should be understood that the "Friends of Cooper Spur Mountain Resort" is an organization whose members are users of winter recreation areas on Mt. Hood.  Northwest Ski Club Council shares this constituency.  At no time in the history of organized skiing in the State of Oregon have the skiers (Alpine or Nordic), snowboarders, or other recreational users of Mt. Hood had a voice in influencing the development on the mountain.  Environmental organizations have a long, successful history.  The voices of the developers are certainly heard.  Where have we, the user, been?

It needs to be understood that "Friends of Cooper Spur Mountain Resort" has not been created to act in opposition to the efforts of any environmental group.  On the contrary, the environment is a huge concern of the "Friends of Cooper Spur Mountain Resort"----they are in existence to give people and organizations like your ski clubs and their members a voice, whether you are pro-development or no-development.  NWSCC supports any and all efforts to provide safe, fun, environmentally sustainable settings where we can enjoy ALL of the winter sports we love, anywhere in the Northwest.  To that end, we will continue to make our club members aware of the activities of organizations like the "Friends of Cooper Spur Mountain Resort".   We leave it up to you, the clubs and club members, to make the decision whether or not to support those activities.  No board member of NWSCC will represent the views of his/her individual club & it's membership, and will not use their leadership position of their individual club, without permission from their club(s).

From FRIENDS of COOPER SPUR MOUNTAIN RESORT:

Friends of Cooper Spur request your support to attend a public hearing on Jan 22, 2003, 7:30 pm at the Best Western Hood River Inn.  The meeting is held in order to take public testimony regarding its Goal 8 mapping.  The outcome of this project will determine the sites in Hood River County where destination resorts will be allowed under Goal 8.  While Cooper Spur Mountain Resort has not turned in a formal proposal to the county, Goal 8 mapping process will have an important role in determining how and when Cooper Spur resort will apply for approval.  If the county maps the former Inn at Cooper Spur property as eligible, which we believe is appropriate, then it will indicate the county's support for a destination resort at Cooper Spur Mountain Resort.  The developer will still have to go through a Conditional Use permitting process which will allow everyone an opportunity to debate the plan.

Friends of Cooper Spur are providing transportation (two locations to board the bus) to Wednesday's hearing in Hood River:

Please call in your reservations to ride the bus to 503-287-5438.

As most of you know, Mt. Hood Meadows purchased the little Cooper Spur Ski Area, and  now wishes to make some housing on the PRIVATE LAND in the vicinity of  the present Cooper Spur Inn.  So far so good.

Enter the environmental extremists who seemingly oppose most everything, and who will be addressing the Wasco County Planning Commission on the evening of January 22nd.  Dave Riley of Mt. Hood Meadows asked if we could get together some skier types to speak in behalf of the Cooper Spur resort, to counter the environmental group.  What with our present organizations, the Northwest Ski Club Council, and its member clubs, we should be able to fill a bus or two on the Wednesday evening, Jan 22nd, for a little jaunt to Hood River, and put on a real show for the Planning Commission.   Hopefully, we will overwhelm the xtremists with numbers.
From what I can gather, the Planning Commissioners will not speak, and each attendee who wishes to speak must register beforehand, and is allowed a maximmum of three minutes at the microphone.  It was suggested we run some busses from Portland, and Riley & Co offered to pick up the bus fare.  We need to have some idea of who wishes to board which bus.  Call in your reservations to the Meadows office:  503-287-5438.
Check the website www.friendsofcooperspur.com.  It lists 10 reasons for the improvement.  You might get some ideas to air to the Commissioners.

Thank you!

Top Snowboarders at Mt. Bachelor February 5-9, 2003

Bend, Ore. — January 14, 2003 — For the second straight year  the top snowboarders in the country will be competing at Mt. Bachelor in the Chevy Truck U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix February 5-9, 2003.

The premier snowboard series in North America, last season the Mt. Bachelor stop on the Chevy Truck circuit was an Olympic Qualifying event.  In 2003 this competition will be a huge draw for the athletes due to the $10,000 in cash prizes for first place finalists, and television coverage on NBC and ESPN.  The USSA sanctioned event features Parallel Giant Slalom and Superpipe competitions, plus fan favorite Yahoo! Big Air & Style exhibition on a specially designed hit.

“Expect some big name riders,” said Mt. Bachelor spokesman Chris Johnston.  “At our Grand Prix last year the four eventual Olympic Halfpipe medal winners, Kelly Clark, Ross Powers, Danny Kass and J.J. Thomas, all competed.”

“We also hope to see local favorites such as Leslee Olson and ’02 Olympic GS medal winner Chris Klug,” Johnston added.

Subject: More Info On The Stolen Skis
omary@...
Send Email Send Email

As you can see---NWSCC has lots of information to share with you.  Here is some information on the Stolen Skis dilemma (Sat, Jan 4th @ Cascade Lodge).  We appreciate any help you might be able to provide.

A lot of the skis stolen were brand new (Christmas presents). If you have any information, the contact person is their coach: Andrew Beckham, Beaverton High School Coach.    503-244-5280.

After the news was circulated among club members, there has been a call for action from Dick Woolley, Plaza/Edgeset Ski Club.  He is aksing if anyone has skis to donate to the Beaverton Team, so the team does not fold, please call the coach.
Dick is donating two pairs of skis!!

And here is a story from Violet Anderson, Pacrat member----she urges everyone to put your name on your skis----at minimum, note the serial number of your skis and keep in a safe place.  After winning the Golden Rose and a certificate for a tune-up at the Raven's Perch in Government Camp, I left my skis for a tune-up.  After months of trying to get a hold of anyone there, I learned that they went out of business.  I talked to anyone I could in Gov't Camp, and most folks said everything was gone and I was out of luck.  Finally one night, by pure luck, Greg and I ate dinner in Huckleberry's at a table next to the person who had 'acquired' my skis.  He first said everything in the shop was gone, then he said he could come up with them for $150. Then he got a conscious and left them at the Gov't Camp coffee shop. I now have my skis back (that would've cost me $800 at any ski shop to replace).
Having your name on your skis not only is proof that they are yours, but it is a deterrent to thieves.  Skis are too expensive to lose.  And knowing your serial number can also help!!!

COOPER SPUR MOUNTAIN RESORT EXPANSION PLANS: HOW CAN YOU HELP??

The Hood River County Planning Commission is currently taking public input regarding an ordinance which will establish appropriate locations for destination resorts in the county. This ordinance will influence the
future expansion plans for Cooper Spur Mountain Resort (CSMR).

CSMR currently consists of a mountain lodge with condo suites, hotel rooms, log cabins, log homes, restaurant and lounge, tennis court, and hot tub facilities. Only about 3 acres of the 775 acres of private land
has been improved. Additionally, CSMR operates a small ski area with a new double chairlift, three surface lifts and lodge buildings. The current improvements are contained to only 50 acres of trails for
skiing, snowboarding and inner tubing - however the ski area permit would allow for expansion to 1,400 acres.
For the past year, CSMR has been carefully studying different alternatives for developing the private land, as well as the Forest Service Permit Area. While CSMR has not finalized its plans, the options
being studied include overnight housing for destination visitors, vacation homes and expanded outdoor mountain recreation facilities for year-round use.

The location is perfect for an expanded destination resort. The area already has 35 vacation homes adjoining CSMR private land, and all the private land has been logged off by prior owners. The majority of the
ski area permit area was logged off or burned several years ago, and needs thinning. Ski trails will create forage and edge habitat for elk and deer. A good road system already serves CSMR.

Hood River County suffers from high unemployment and a small tax base. Jobs will be created from ongoing operations and the construction of a destination resort which may take over 10 years to complete. Property
tax receipts will help the county fund schools, which is needed desperately.

Unfortunately, there is opposition to the expansion of CSMR. The tactics of the opposition have been to clog or bog down the process, and CSMR expects them to be out in force at an upcoming public hearing.

CSMR is announcing the formation of "Friends of Cooper Spur Mountain Resort," to support sustainable recreation and resort facility development in the Cooper Spur area, in harmony with the natural
environment.  FCSMR is dedicated to high quality mountain resort experiences, the development of first class facilities and CSMR, and access for the public to enjoy outdoor recreation on the beautiful
northeast side of Mt. Hood.

CSMR invites the Northwest Ski Club Council and its members to join "Friends of Cooper Spur Mountain Resort" as charter members. A web site:
www.friendsofcooperspur.com has been established to communicate the vision, mission, and goals of the organization. You will find ways to become involved in the effort by contacting the website. The first public meeting is on January 22, 2003. Letters to county commissioners, to the Hood River News, and attending a few public meetings will be
necessary to counteract the opposition's plans to kill recreation and resort expansion at Cooper Spur.

If you believe there should be more opportunities for well-planned, environmentally friendly resort facilities, then go to the web site and sign up, or call 503-337-2222, ext. 259 now!

Please keep your eyes open for stolen skis !!!!!!

Saturday morning a crime occurred at the Cascade Lodge in Government Camp, OR, sometime over Friday night (Jan 3).  MANY pairs of new race skis (12 pair) were stolen from the wax/storage room at Cascade lodge (listed below).  In an effort to keep the thieves that took these skis from re-selling them around the mountain and in hopes of gaining a lead on who these people are, we would like to request that this message be sent out to all your club members so they can be aware of this situation.

If you are buying skis from someone, be sure to question the source of skis being purchased outside a shop.  If someone is offering up deals too good to be true they probably are right now, and unfortunately there are a number of high school racers dealing with the loss as a result.

If you have a lead, please feel free to contact us at contact@..., or call the Beaverton High School Coach (listed below).

Thanks,
Northwest Ski Club Council

NOTE FROM THE BEAVERTON COACH:
As you may have heard, Beaverton High School Ski Racing Team had a devastating event on the mountain Saturday prior to Cato Race. Our team had 8 (actually 7 1/2) pairs of skis stolen from Cascade Lodge in
Government Camp. The skis were in the wax/store room. We discovered the theft at 6:30 AM. The Tigard team had 3 pair stolen and one girl from the Meadows Race Team had one pair taken. Our kids and coaches are extremely upset at the loss. Timberline generously offered to put our team in demos for the day so we could compete in the race. We could not leave Cascade Lodge until the police arrived to interview everyone and make a report. The police did not arrive until 8:45 AM. By the time the police completed interviewing all victims - the race had begun and it was impossible to enter the race at that point.

Could you please keep your eyes open  for the skis. I am sure someone will try to sell them as all the skis were new, most were Christmas presents.  Many had only been skied on twice - Thursday and Friday. This is a
tremendous loss to our team. It may prevent many of of our racers from racing this season as it was the only pair of skis they own. Most of the skis are slalom racing skis so the thief may try to unload them on some
local racers. Please help keep your eyes out for our equipment - we need all the help we can get.

If you have any information or questions please do not hesitate to call me,
Andrew Beckham, Beaverton High School Coach.    503-244-5280.
