August 2001
Editor: Lynn Kovacs

Update from NWSCC's Chair
I know, I know. It's August. But since most of you
are either ski club officers or snowsports industry
employees, you know that August is one of the busiest
months of the year. And when it comes to being busy,
your Northwest Ski Club Board and Council are no
exceptions. Our first event of the year is the Ski
Fair, which we're bringing back in all its spectacular
glory on Monday, September 27th at the Monarch Hotel
in Clackamas, OR. Want to visit with some terrific
ski resort vendors? We've got 'em! Want to buy this
year's Mt. Hood Meadows 10-punch pass at a special ski
club discount? This is the ONLY night you can do it!
And how about checking out Mt. Bachelor's terrific
season pass bargains. So much to do, and only one
night to do it. This is not to mention the incredible
bargains you're going to be able to bid on at our
second annual Silent Auction and raffle. Trips, lift
tickets and other goodies will be available for a
steal!
Other events in the planning stages are (yes, it's
true) "The Last Blitz" happening December 5th - 9th in
Bend, OR. PACRAT is offering a deal your club can't
refuse-an incentive rebate!! You've gotta check it
out. NWSCC's Member Benefits Directors in both
Washington and Oregon are hard at work putting
together this year's new list of benefits, and a new
membership card will be forthcoming very soon.
Speaking of membership, our new Membership Directors
are already mapping out "Road Trip 2002" and will soon
be visiting your club!

The brand new 2001-2002 Northwest Skier's Directory is
in process and will also premier at the Ski Fair. The
Council has trips planned to Copper Mountain, Mammoth
Mountain, Mt. Bachelor and Sunshine Village. And
behind the scenes, you'll notice the ever-improving
looks of our newsletter and web site. Last but not
least, we're working hard on hosting the Far West Ski
Association Annual Convention, to be held June 6-9th
at the Marriott Hotel here in Portland.
Yes, we're having a very busy summer. But if we can
help our clubs get just one more member, or get just
one more snowrider on an Oregon or Washington slope,
we'll consider it worth every minute. Just let us
know, and we'll be there for you. Don't forget to
keep up on the news at our web site, www.nwskiers.org.
And if you have ideas or suggestions, please let us
know.
Now, here's to ten feet of snow on the ground by
Halloween!

Warm regards,
Sheri Parshall
Chairman, Northwest Ski Club Council

NWSCC Council Meeting Format Changes
At its recent annual planning session, the NWSCC Board
evaluated the format of the monthly Council Meetings.
All Club Reps are encouraged to come and participate
in the revised format of future meetings. Beginning
with the September 17, 2001 meeting, we will have a
no-host social hour from 6:00 - 7:00 PM. This will
give everybody a chance to review upcoming event
fliers and visit. Meeting agendas will include
upcoming event information including dates and contact
names and phone numbers. The meeting will begin at
7:00 PM. Scheduled guest speakers, including our
commercial members and sponsors, will have an
opportunity to give their presentation to all
attendees. The meeting will then open up to Club Reps
to discuss pre-determined topics. The topics may be
issues affecting all clubs - insurance, family events,
attracting and retaining members are just a few
examples. Club Reps will have the opportunity to
learn how other clubs handle trip/event expenses,
members bringing pets, alcohol policies, and many
other topics. The new format is intended to exchange
ideas, experiences, and other information.
Club President: Please urge your Council Rep to
attend the monthly meetings, scheduled for the third
Wednesday of each month. Feel free to come yourself!
Club Reps: Please mark your calendar and plan to
attend future meetings. If you cannot attend, please
arrange to have another club member go to the meeting
in your place.

NWSCC & S'no Joke's Retailers Night
(Contributed by John Perkins, NWSCC Washington Member
Benefits Director)
Monday, August 13, was NWSCC's Washington Clubs
Retailers Night held at the Executive Inn in Seattle,
WA. Good attendance from Sahalee, Seattle, SkiBacs;
SkiHawks, Snowbus, S'no Joke and WIHSKI Ski Clubs.
After announcements from the various ski clubs, the
retailers listed below displayed their wares, and
talked with attendees: Mt. Pilchuck Ski and Sports,
Olympic Sports, Recreation and Equipment Inc. (REI);
Sturtevants Ski Shop, Ski Mart, World Cup Service,
Alpine Hut, Moxies Powder House, and Oregon's own GI
Joe's. The upcoming season's new equipment was a
topic of hot interest. The event also included
give-aways, promotions of upcoming sales and demo
days, and ski tuning. Many attendees were asking
afterwards when another interclub event would be held
in Washington. NWSCC's Washington clubs and club
members are urged to contact John Perkins to help
organize more NWSCC events in Washington. We thank
everyone who contributed.

In prior years, NWSCC racers have competed and won or
placed in their category at both Northstar-at-Tahoe

event - why it will be a dress rehearsal for the 2003
Championships, which will be held in our own backyard
at Mt. Bachelor, OR! This season, we will be
arranging n two trips. Trip 1 will arrive Wednesday

FWRA Racing Championships, April 5 & 6, 2003, Mt.

This will be the first time that this event will be

excited! NWSCC is hoping to have over 100 racers

these Championships. A couple of trip package of
varying durations will be organized and offered to
club members. This event is not limited to racers -
