FARWEST SKI ASSN.
Re-Cap of 2001 Convention in Reno, NE
(Editors Note: Some of the information for this article was provided by Sheri
Parshall, NWSCC Chair) WOW! What a great Far West Convention. First: NWSCC's
very own Steve Coxen was re-elected President of FWSA!
Second big news - Mt Bachelor, OR was selected as site of the 2003 Farwest Race
Association Championships! Please see the article in the Future Events. This
is a huge opportunity for Oregon, and NWSCC is already beginning to plan.
Other fun news: Bergfreunde Ski Club won the Tollakson award for outstanding
ski club in the class AAA division. Chris Miller of Cascade Ski Club won the
award for outstanding historical project, and NWSCC's web site won First Place
as well - Mary Olhausen is our Web Manager and Chris Miller is our Web Master.
The newsletters for Plaza/Edgeset and Skiyente Ski Clubs won awards in their
division, and I am proud to announce that NWSCC's own newsletter was awarded a
gold certificate on the Council level. Thank you Linda McGavin and Chris Miller
for your help with NWSCC newsletter.
The convention's special guest speaker was Debbie Armstrong who won a gold medal
in GS at the 1984 Olympics in Sarjevo. Debbie grew up in Seattle, and has
trained on Mt. Hood. Charlie's at Government Camp, Mt. Hood has a life sized
wood plaque of Debbie on its walls. Debbie was invited to an impromptu Skiyente
meeting at the Convention, and became an honorary club member.
In other fun events, Dale Parshall of Schnee Vogeli and Tracy Chosa of Skiyente
Ski Club were on the first and second place teams, respectively, at the golf
tournament. Several NWSCC club members bought trips to Big White and Big
Mountain, as well as luggage and Amtrak tickets. NWSCC Board member Linda
McGavin won three nights at any ClubMed resort in North America as a door prize.
This was the first FWSA Convention that I have attended, and I was very
impressed with how well this event is planned and executed. I do not want to
sound gushy, but I came away with much more information than expected. And now
we turn our attention to the 2002 FWSA Convention to be held in Portland, OR.
2002 Convention in Portland, OR
The Marriott Hotel on Front Street will be the site for the FWSA Convention in
June 2002. Sheri Parshall is overseeing the planning of this great convention.
The Travel Carousel and Silent Auction for the 2002 Convention will be held in a
14,000 sq. ft. banquet hall. The vendors from the Reno Convention are excited
to come to Portland, as are the delegates from many of the California, Nevada,
and Arizona, and New Mexico clubs. The prospective list of guest speakers is
impressive. And there will also be golf and tennis tournaments, skiing at
Timberline, the Portland Rose Festival, shopping excursion, award banquets,
parties, and much more (we are looking into a fly-fishing excursion). Needless
to say, NWSCC has a huge job ahead in planning. Volunteers will be needed to
help with registration, decorations, fliers, the tournaments, gifts, and much
more. Volunteering to help is a great way to familiarize yourself with the
event a year before it even happens. I encourage all NWSCC clubs to plan on
attending this event, and hope that many club members will volunteer to help
with all of the festivities. Please contact Sheri Parshall at
cougskier@..., or (503) 245-3782 for more information, or come to the next
planning meeting on Monday, July 2nd at 6:00 pm at the Rose and the Raindrop.
Club Recognition and Awards at 2002 FWSA Convention - Intent to Enter and Judge
Due July 1, 2001
Club Presidents, NWSCC Reps, Club Newsletter Editors, Club Website Managers:
All NWSCC clubs are encouraged to complete the enclosed forms and return by the
July 1, 2001 Deadline. For some unknown reason, very few NWSCC member clubs
participate in this annual competition and recognition. Many clubs have great
newsletters that would be probable contenders for top honors. Since next
year's convention will be held in Portland, OR, it would be terrific if many of
our clubs entered the judged events. After all, wouldn't it be great to pick up
club awards while attending the convention? So please complete the forms and
qualify your club to participate.
UPCOMING CLUB & REGIONAL TRAVEL & EVENTS

and is now due in full. An eight-day add-on trip is an additional $850. Call

NWSCC Ski Fair, September 27, 2001, Monarch Hotel, Portland OR Yes, plans for
this year's Ski Fair are well underway! This year's event will include paid
booths for local retailers and regional resorts, free booths for NWSCC's
commercial members and clubs, a no-host bar, dancing, and much more. We need
volunteers to help with this event - volunteers to help with set-up, tear-down,
decorations, fliers, prizes, auction, and so forth. Please contact Mary
Olhausen at omary@... to volunteer or for additional information. Or,
come to the next planning meeting on July 10th at 6:00 pm at the Rose and the
Raindrop.
NWSCC CLUB MATTERS
(Editor's Note: We are all challenged with trying to discover ways to ensure
that our clubs' memberships continue to grow, and that we do not rely on the
same people left with doing everything. This editorial was in the May issue of
Plaza/Edgeset Ski Club's monthly newsletter, and I decided to share it with
other clubs, because Emilio's observations and conclusions apply to all of our
clubs and at the Council level, too. L. Kovacs)
Editorial: Diversity, Club's offerings, Membership Benefits, by Emilio Trampuz
It is the editor's job to editorialize, at least from time to time. So, after
our first year as a merged club, and after my first season as the newsletter
editor, let me share with you some thoughts on our club's activities, and the
diversity of our members.
Even though we are primarily into snow-related activities, our club offers a
wide variety of other activities and events throughout the year, such as
bowling, golf, wine and seafood tasting, picnics, parties, or going to the
movies (Warren Miller's for example). Even in the midst of the ski season, we
have some non-skiing related activities, such as the Chocolate party. It is a
pity, though, that a lot of our members miss out on at least half of all that
the club has to offer.
I must admit, for a long time, I was rather one-sided myself, skipping a lot of
the club's events. Someone once remarked that they mainly saw me at PACRAT races
and nowhere else. When I became the newsletter editor, I felt compelled to
attend more of the club's functions so as to cover them better. This is when I
became more aware of the diversity among our members.
At our Valentine's Day Chocolate party, I noticed that there were very few
PACRAT racers there. Of the 40 racers in our club, only 2 or 3 were at the
party. A few more of them showed up at our Anthony Lakes trip, but not very
many. The PACRAT league is recreational racing, just for fun, and the racers are
just ordinary folks like you and me. But they may be shy when it comes to
socializing.
It seems that, within our club, we have perhaps 3 distinct groups of members:
a) those whose main interest is in the ski trips;
b) those who mostly enjoy the social events, parties, picnics, etc., and
c) those who are primarily into ski/snowboard racing.
On top of that, there is a further division into those from the Plaza club and
those from the Edgeset club. This distinction will naturally disappear with
time, as we get to know each other and the club truly blends into one, but for
now we are still running into lots of new and unfamiliar faces.
What I would like to suggest, based on my very satisfying experience so far, is
that we should all make an effort to mingle more, participate in more events,
and get to know our fellow club mates better. It will enrich our lives, expand
our horizons, and we'll get to meet some really neat people.
So, come on you partiers - sign up for a season of ski racing; it's fun, even if
you just snowplow through the race course! And you racers don't be shy to show
up at the Bashed Ball party after the snow melts! And lets all go bowling and
golfing and wine and seafood and chocolate tasting a bit more often! And let's
make it a point to take part in at least one ski trip every season. And let's
all show up at least once at the regular monthly meetings, the first Tuesday of
every month. Let's find out what we've been missing all these years!
FUTURE TRAVEL
USRSA Ski Week, January 5 - 13, 2002, Park City, Utah This should be an
inexpensive trip. Utah ski areas are booked for the Winter Olympics, but
scrambling to bring people before and after the events.
FWSA Ski Week, January 26 - February 2, 2002, Copper Mountain, CO. The cost of
this trip will be approximately $650 for standard room or $695 for a premium
room, excluding airfare. This is much lower than first anticipated! Copper
Mountain has three base areas, one of which is for beginning skiers/boarders.
All three areas offer chairlifts, lodges, food service facilities and
cafeterias. NWSCC has only 62 spaces, and ½ are reserved. To sign-up send a
$100 non-refundable deposit to Sylvia Kearns at 7006 NE 72nd Circle, Vancouver,
WA 98661, or call her at (360) 260-7169.
Heliskiing, Tyax Resort, British Columbia, Canada, March 8-15, 2002 NWSCC is
promoting this South Jersey Ski Club sponsored trip because of the relatively
close proximity of Tyax Resort (65 miles northeast of Whistler). The price is
$4,564 US and includes: 7 nights lodging, 3 meals a day, powder ski rentals,
and transfers from Vancouver, B.C. Transportation to Vancouver is not included.
A deposit of $600, payable to SJSC is due now, and the balance of the trip cost
is due no later than December 8th, 2001. If interested contact Ernest Kraus,
Trip Chair, South Jersey Ski Club (856) 468-8537, or DMertz000@....

this ski trip to Grindelwald, Switzerland. For information contact Tucker
Hoffmann at (510) 278-5900 or TravelFWSA@..., CANCELLATION PENALTIES WILL
APPLY AFTER August 1st, 2001.
FWRA Racing Championships, April 5 & 6, 2003, Mt. Bachelor, OR This is the first
time that this event will be held in Oregon, and Mt. Bachelor and NWSCC are very
excited! NWSCC is hoping to have over 100 racers participate in this event.
Historically, NWSCC's has had anywhere from four (4) to thirty (30) racers
compete. They have almost always either won or placed in their event - and now
NWSCC has the opportunity to dominate these Championships. A trip package will
be organized and offered to club members wanting to go. This event is not
limited to racers - club members are encouraged to come and watch these exciting
races, or enjoy Spring skiing/boarding, and many other activities. If you
would like to help with the planning of this event, please contact Sheri
Parshall at cougskier@..., or (503) 245-3782. NWSCC will need help
arranging lodging, parties, transportation, and so forth.

SAFETY UPDATE
Sylvia attended the FWSA Convention, and learned what other councils and clubs
are doing, and will be considering what NWSCC could implement to enhance its
Safety Program. Sylvia is researching the feasibility and cost of ordering a
video on preventing ACL injuries, which would then be available to the clubs.
