FEATURED GUEST SPEAKERS
Oregon Cancer Ski Out
Dick Woolley of Plaza/Edge Ski Club and Larry Chadwick were the featured
speakers at the recent NWSCC Council Meeting, and spoke about the growing
success of the Oregon Cancer Ski Out. Larry and a few friends started this
event in 1988 with the objective to benefit cancer research, hospice and cancer
prevention programs. Larry continues to act as Chair, and Dick is a Board
member.
Next year's Cancer Ski Out will mark the 14th anniversary of a fundraising event
that is looking to grow beyond its current two day consistency race format.
Larry and his Board are hoping to add a new event on Saturday. Additionally,
the underlying Willamette Falls Foundation, which is a 503(c)3 non-profit
organization, is looking into the feasibility of helping organizations in other
States to run a 'Ski Out' event benefiting their own hospice, cancer research,
education and prevention programs.
The 2002 event will be held March 3 and 4th at Mt. Hood Meadows, Mt. Hood, OR.
35 five-member teams compete for prizes during a two-day ski/board consistency
race. Speed is not the key to success here, so skiers/boarders of all abilities
are invited to participate. An oral and silent auction keep participants busy
when they are not skiing/boarding.
If you are interested in more information about either participating in next
year's event, or becoming involved with the organization, please see their
website www.cancerskiout.org, or contact Larry at (503) 699-9722, or
chadco@....

DISABLED SKIERS/BOARDERS
Even though most of our clubs may not have disabled members, it is important to
be aware of the programs and activities that are available to any person with a
permanent physical disability. It isn't just to single out a group of people.
Rather it is because NWSCC club members know physical and mental emotional
rewards of participating in an activity. And these organizations provide the
opportunity to learn something new, set and strive to meet new goals, gain
confidence and self-esteem, meet new people, and have fun.
Over the past 10 years, FWSA member Bay Area Council of Skiers ("BAC") member
clubs have raised and contributed approximately $150,000 to the Tahoe Adaptive
Ski School for disabled skiers. In 1976, a group of disabled Vietnam vets began
this program, which has since expanded and become the Disabled Sports USA (see
accompanying article). The Tahoe Adaptive Ski School programs include classes
for skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing. Students include local school
children, and adults from various parts of the USA, as well as other countries.
Disabled Sports USA ("DS/USA") is a national nonprofit organization with
chapters in most States, including Washington. It offers year-round sports
rehabilitation programs to individuals with permanent physical disability.
DS/USA activities several different snow and water sports, horseback riding,
volleyball, golf, hiking, rafting, and much more. Area chapters work with
resorts and businesses to organize classes, fitness events, trips, competitions,
and much more. DS/USA membership contributions are tax-deductible. For more
information, including Washington contacts, please check www.ds/usa.org.

members participating in a FWSA function.

in a FWSA event or program and is intended to maximize the enjoyment for all
participants and provide guidelines for the FWSA. All participants are
requested to observe common courtesy and generally accepted standards of social
and moral behavior.
In accordance with Federal and State laws, FWSA will not tolerate the use of
illegal drugs at any FWSA sponsored trip or event. If there is evidence that a
participant is using, dispensing or selling illegal drugs, the person will be
removed from the trip or event and forfeit any funds paid for the trip or event.
Additionally, the participants will not be allowed to attend future FWSA
sponsored events or trips.
Alcohol and tobacco use is allowed in moderation and where permitted by law.
Smoking is prohibited on any ground transportation for an event sponsored by
FWSA. A FWSA authorized representative or monitor will remove and or isolate
any participant who violates the law regarding the use of alcohol or tobacco.
Participants will also be removed and/or isolated if they become obnoxious or
offensive to other participants due to the use of alcohol or tobacco.

or harassment because of race, religion, color, national origin, ancestry,
disability, marital status, sexual orientation or age. Verbal, physical or
visual harassment and discrimination is unlawful and will not be tolerated.
