Golden Rose Ski Classic
June 4th, 2005 at Timberline
Mt. Hood Ski Education Foundation and Northwest Ski Club Council jointly
sponsor this race. The format has changed so please read the information
carefully. All registration information and updates are posted on the
MHSEF website at www.mthoodacademy.com.
Event: Head-to-head team racing on Timberline's Palmer Snowfield,
Saturday, June 4th, 2005. Teams of six compete in three runs of dual GS,
counting each racer's best two runs to calculate team's total points. Points
are based on a handicap system considering both age and gender. The fastest
time does not always earn the most points!
Format: During the first two runs teams will race head-to-head against
other teams. Each team will compete once on the Blue course and once on the
Red course. The third run is a "shoot-out", where the fastest scratch times
of the day are paired for final competition, regardless of team. A coin
toss at the start will determine who gets which course.
Scoring: Racers must complete two of the three runs in order to be
included in the scoring. The combined time of a racer's best two runs will
be converted to Golden Rose Race Points, based on total time, age and
gender. The best (lowest) four points from each team will be used to
calculate the total team points. At least one female racer's points must be
used in the team points. (The NEW Golden Rose Race Points will spread out
team scores.)
Team Entry Fee: The entry fee is $330.00 per team. Teams consist of six
racers and must include at least one female. Entry fees must be submitted
as a single check made out to MHSEF along with the team entry form and the
Timberline event release. Please mail completed entry form, entry fee and
releases to: MHSEF, Golden Rose Ski Classic, P.O. Box 189, Government
Camp, OR 97028.
Entry Deadline & Cancellation: Complete entries must be received by Friday,
May 27th. If the weather forecast looks bad, or not enough teams have
registered, a decision will be made on Wednesday, June 1st to cancel the
event. At that time entry fees will be refunded. If weather causes
cancellation on the day of the event, entry fees will not be refunded.
Lift Tickets: Lift tickets are not included with the team entry. Racers
needing lift tickets may purchase a $31.00 racer ticket at registration on
race day. Teams may pre-purchase tickets by submitting a separate check
made out to Timberline along with the team entry. Pre-purchased lift
tickets will be included in the team packet at registration. If the event
is cancelled prior to registration ticket money will be refunded.
Registration: Event registration will be from 7:30am to 8:00am in
Timberline's WyEast Day Lodge. Team captains should pick up the race
packet, which will include racer bibs, pre-purchased lift tickets, event
t-shirts, start orders, etc. Any significant changes to the program will be
announced at registration.
Awards Presentation: Following the "shoot-out" race run there will be a
reception in the Wy'East Day Lodge. Food will be provided and an event
video will be shown. Awards will be presented to the top three teams as
well as the fastest male and female competitors. Several other award
categories will also be presented.
Further Information: A list of competitors will be posted to
www.mthoodacademy.com as registrations are submitted. There will be a link
from the home page. Also check this web site for any updates and changes to
the event program.

Pacific Northwest Ski Areas Association (PNSAA)

P.O. Box 1720

Hood River, Oregon 97031-0720

PRESS RELEASE

The PNSAA Honors Steve Johnson as Forest Service Partner of the Year

Contact: Scott Kaden, PNSAA, (541) 386-9600

Release Date: Friday, May 13, 2005

Hood River, OR - Steve Johnson, a recreation specialist and special use
permit administrator from Oregon's Ashland Ranger District, was named the
Pacific Northwest Ski Areas Association (PNSAA) 2005 Forest Service Partner
of the Year. The Association bestows the Partner of the Year honor on USDA
Forest Service employees who make noteworthy contributions to the operations
of Pacific Northwest winter sports facilities.

Johnson has steadfastly served the USDA Forest Service for 25 years and has
been involved with the administration of the Mt. Ashland Ski Area special
use permit for the last 14 years. During this tenure, Johnson has served as
snow ranger, permit administrator, winter sports specialist, cultural
resource coordinator, trails specialist, and wildland firefighter (among
other duties). Johnson has also worked as a ski instructor and alpine race
director at Mt. Ashland and has held similar positions at the winter sports
facility in Thredbo, Australia, as well as at California's former Mt. Shasta
Ski Area.

Mt. Ashland's ski area expansion project is evidence of Johnson's leadership
and dedication to public service. When Johnson assumed the snow ranger
position at the Ashland Ranger District, he inherited a ski area in
transition - moving from private to public ownership - struggling with a
difficult administrative approval for its master development plan. During
the last decade, Johnson has administered two revisions to Mt. Ashland's
site-specific ski area expansion plan; reviewed, improved, and implemented
numerous other ski area-related projects; and, maybe more important,
fostered a working relationship with ski area management that he has helped
build from a foundation comprised of mutual respect. Some of Mt. Ashland's
programs have become touchstones for environmental stewardship. For
example, in May 2001, Mt. Ashland earned the coveted Silver Eagle Award for
Excellence in Environmental Education. Jeffrey Hanson, general manager of
Mt. Ashland, noted: "The Summer Service Program for which the Silver Eagle
was awarded would not have been possible without the extensive cooperation
of Steve and many Forest Service specialists."

"Steve Johnson epitomizes the Forest Service's mantra 'caring for the land
and serving people,'" noted Scott Kaden, president of the Pacific Northwest
Ski Areas Association. "One attribute of his public service has been his
unwavering stewardship ethic. Additionally, the Association is pleased to
have this opportunity to recognize Steve for his thoughtful administration
of Mt. Ashland's special use permit, as well as his extensive knowledge of
winter sports," remarked Kaden.

For additional information about the Partner of the Year award program,
contact Scott Kaden at (541) 386-9600 (or via email at skaden@...).
For more information about Johnson's public land management
responsibilities, contact Scott Conroy, Forest Supervisor of the Rogue River
and Siskiyou national forests, at (541) 858-2210.
