Northwest Ski Club Council (NWSCC) would like to thank everyone for their response to the recent e-mail concerning “Friends of Cooper Spur Mountain Resort.”  While the majority of the comments were in support of the group’s efforts, we did receive a few negative remarks.  Most of these noted an opinion about keeping Mt. Hood undeveloped; however, there were several that criticized the political nature of the e-mail.

It should be understood that the "Friends of Cooper Spur Mountain Resort" is an organization whose members are users of winter recreation areas on Mt. Hood.  Northwest Ski Club Council shares this constituency.  At no time in the history of organized skiing in the State of Oregon have the skiers (Alpine or Nordic), snowboarders, or other recreational users of Mt. Hood had a voice in influencing the development on the mountain.  Environmental organizations have a long, successful history.  The voices of the developers are certainly heard.  Where have we, the user, been?

It needs to be understood that "Friends of Cooper Spur Mountain Resort" has not been created to act in opposition to the efforts of any environmental group.  On the contrary, the environment is a huge concern of the "Friends of Cooper Spur Mountain Resort"----they are in existence to give people and organizations like your ski clubs and their members a voice, whether you are pro-development or no-development.  NWSCC supports any and all efforts to provide safe, fun, environmentally sustainable settings where we can enjoy ALL of the winter sports we love, anywhere in the Northwest.  To that end, we will continue to make our club members aware of the activities of organizations like the "Friends of Cooper Spur Mountain Resort".   We leave it up to you, the clubs and club members, to make the decision whether or not to support those activities.  No board member of NWSCC will represent the views of his/her individual club & it's membership, and will not use their leadership position of their individual club, without permission from their club(s).

From FRIENDS of COOPER SPUR MOUNTAIN RESORT:

Friends of Cooper Spur request your support to attend a public hearing on Jan 22, 2003, 7:30 pm at the Best Western Hood River Inn.  The meeting is held in order to take public testimony regarding its Goal 8 mapping.  The outcome of this project will determine the sites in Hood River County where destination resorts will be allowed under Goal 8.  While Cooper Spur Mountain Resort has not turned in a formal proposal to the county, Goal 8 mapping process will have an important role in determining how and when Cooper Spur resort will apply for approval.  If the county maps the former Inn at Cooper Spur property as eligible, which we believe is appropriate, then it will indicate the county's support for a destination resort at Cooper Spur Mountain Resort.  The developer will still have to go through a Conditional Use permitting process which will allow everyone an opportunity to debate the plan.

Friends of Cooper Spur are providing transportation (two locations to board the bus) to Wednesday's hearing in Hood River:

Please call in your reservations to ride the bus to 503-287-5438.
