We've got another one up! Here's a preview of the machinist article
for those new to the machining trade: "Help For Novices." If you wish

What is the best way to learn something? For my money, it's hard to
beat the "just do it" method, which may land you in hot water once in
a while. So be it.
The following are some basic shop practices for newcomers. The
information is also about avoiding blunders. Not all mistakes in a
machine shop are of the dimensional type. Blowing chips on the guy
next to you is an example of a nondimensional mistake. By learning
some of these basics, newcomers will be in a better position to work
independently and with other shop personnel.
- Avoid using the support table of a disc sander to deburr thin plates.
I've worked with two people who severely ground down their thumbs
trying to deburr the edges of a thin plate in a disc sander. As they
were sanding an edge, the plate got sucked into the small opening
between the table and the disc, which pulled the plate and their
thumbs into the disc. If you are going to deburr a plate with a disc
sander, make sure you hold the plate above the support table.
- Understand nominal sizes.
Nominal sizes are convenient labels used to discuss part sizes that,
in reality, nobody will ever hit. However slight, there is always some
tolerance or error in every machined part. People sometimes say, "Just
shoot for the nominal." That means if the nominal size you're working
to is 1/2", then you need to do your best, within reason, to machine
the part to 1/2", taking into account the type of machining process
being used. You wouldn't be expected to hold 1/2" nominal size as
closely with a milling machine as you would with a surface grinder.
- Know the difference between 'absolute' and 'incremental' ...

The Blue Ridge Mountain Garden Tractor Pullers Association
(BRMGTPA)will be having an indoor pull on July 19th and it should be a
big event. We will be heavily promoting this event. Anderson Coliseum
is the location inside the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, VA and
the website is http://www.horsecenter.org . It is an incredible
facility and is easy to get to. It is right on the intersections of
I-81 and I-64 in Virginia. You can see the facility from the
Interstate highway. Check it out on their website. This will be a
no-rain-out event due to it being indoors. Please contact me (Greg
Edwards) for more info at sdrawde@... or you can email me for
my phone number. Our pulling club website is

i don't post on here much but i wanted to let everyone know that i
made it another year. i had pepole tell me that i would never see 18 {
i was pretty wild with cars and trucks, could never grow up} well
today i trun 51 and i still act like a kid when i get behind the whell

Hi all. I'm looking for some info. I am building a 1969 Whell horse
commando V8 with an 18hp Briggs IC twin cylinder Vertical shaft. It
is an extra in my collection of Horses, and i thought I would take off
the 8hp pull start Briggs someone put on it and put the 18 I had on
it. I know this is a vertical shaft tractor, but its also a 69 with a
solid frame and unidrive rear like its big brothers. I live in
Chillicothe OH. Are there any groups or classes in my area that I
could pull this tractor in? Again its a toy. Not planning to pull
every week, and no dreams of rooms full of trophies. Just want to
have some fun with it. Like to say it does a little more than just go
to shows and look pretty. Thanks
Joel
I am designing a new micro controlled ignition system to address NLA
Tecumseh OH series engines, and a few HH models for that matter.
Since I needed to address a start/retard feature anyway, I can now
offer any desirable performance curve. So, what is it?
I plan a start at TBD for < 500RPM. Above 500, the first shift would
be to stock full advance. To squeeze out more power, I would imagine
another 3 degrees advance at 4000 RPM or so would be a good thing -
right?
This can either be a step or true curve - Any ideas?
This product will also provide a tach output so that any desired
automotive tach will work correctly.
Any other ideas of desirable features? Rev limiting? An LED to
indicate a given RPM? Redline?
I look forward to your thoughts...
Thank you,
Dale Colvert/Overnight Solutions

it to the pulls for the guys if you want me to bring you some and
save you a 100 mile trip to Toledo and back. Let me know what pull
you will be at and I will have some.

Just google Jerry's Speed Shop. It's on Rugby St just off Anthony
Wayne Trail. Do you have a stocker? 2 or 3 gallons will get you thru
a year easy. Take your own jug and make sure it's a good one that
will tolerate all the stuff that's in race gas. I get new once every
year right before the season. Dumb as hell them specing C12 for stock
motors but I guess that's the easiest thing for them to check.

Hi everyone. We are kicking off our regular pulling season in Virginia
on April 7th. We would like to invite anyone from anywhere that loves
the sport of pulling to come join us and try out our first class sled
and pulling organization. Our goal is to become the best pulling club
on the east coast. We have classes that will just about fit any
tractor you may have to pull. We have classes from 6 year old juniors
up to 4 cylinder car engines and everything in between. Some of our
classes may have different names than what some of you may be
accustomed to but you will find a spot for your tractor, I am almost
positive. Stock Altereds, Pro Altereds, Super Stocks, Pro Stocks, 30
Cubes, Open Super Stocks, etc. can all fit into our Modified
divisions. Check out the rules and cubic inch class you fit in. Our
Super Modified classes will encompass about any motorcycle, compact
diesel, or automobile engine tractors short of v8's. We even have a
Hot Stock class for those that like to do a "little something" to
their tractors that may be deemed "illegal" in most clubs. We have a
class just for your style of tractor. Just make sure you have a
4,000rpm limit governor on it. Check out those classes as well. We
would love to invite anyone to be a member but membership is not
required to pull with us. If you are looking for a non-intimidating,
fun-to-pull-with club, then this is it. Visit us at
www.blueridgemountainpullers.com and feel free to email or call me for
more information. I will give you my number upon request. We have
about a dozen sponsored pulls already and more may be in the works.
Thanks.
