NWF News: THURSDAY, APRIL 13, 2000
<<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>>

Nittany Wrestling Federation presents:
VERY INTENSE PUNISHMENT - PREVIEW
Monday, April 17, 2000
5:30 PM - HUB Lawn, Penn State campus
FREE ADMISSION

The NWF's final event of the semester is scheduled for this coming
Monday, April 17 at 5:30 PM! The show will be held outdoors on the
HUB Lawn and is titled "VIP: Very Intense Punishment!" This will be
the NWF's "season finale," and it will be a night to remember as all
of the titles will be on the line! Here is a brief preview of the
matches that you can expect at "Very Intense Punishment!"

NWF HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP BEST 2 OUT OF 3 FALLS MATCH:
"ZERO GRAVITY" MASON CAGE vs. CHALLENGER "TOO PHAT" YUTZAK ARAFAT
(w/Camel Candy)
The main event for "VIP" will pit two former friends against each
other as NWF Champion "Zero Gravity" Mason Cage will defend his newly
won title against challenger "Too Phat" Yutzak Arafat. This match
came about when Mason Cage, formerly known as "Nittany Lion" Nick
Mason, turned his back on his friend Arafat and Penn State
at "Retribution" less than a week ago. That night he attacked the
current Penn State Nittany Lion mascot, then he attacked Yutzak
Arafat from behind twice. Finally in the coup de gras, Cage won the
NWF Title in despicable fashion when Joe Rules was holding Arafat's
feet down so that "Too Phat" was unable to kick out during Cage's pin
attempt. After the match Arafat challenged "The Turncoat Champion" to
a best two-out-of-three falls match at "VIP" this coming Monday. The
first fall will be a normal match, the second fall will be
a "submissions" match, and in the event that there is a third fall,
it will fought under "Nittany Street Fight" rules. These two have
fought twice in the NWF, with the match at "Retribution" being the
most brutal encounter yet. Three tables were broken and a ladder was
involved, but at "VIP" Cage and Arafat will look to take their
rivalry to the next level of intensity.

NWF TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS: "THE DAMNED" vs. CHALLENGERS JOE
RULES/FUMAR (w/Luxurious Lynne)
The NWF Tag Team Champions "The Damned" will be making their second
title defense against two former tag team champions in "As Seen on
TV" Joe Rules and Fumar. Mad Dog and Draven easily handled their
opponents, Troy Buchanan and John Balsamo, at "Retribution," but
Rules and Fumar will not be as easy. In fact "The Damned" would seem
to be at a serious disadvantage because Fumar and Rules will have the
backing of the Rutgers Revolution, a stable that will do anything to
capture NWF gold, as we've seen in the past. However even though the
Revolution is underhanded, "The Damned" have shown that they have a
few tricks up their sleeves as well and they will make this a
competitive tag team encounter.

NWF UNIVERSITY PARK CHAMPIONSHIP: "LIVEWIRE" DAVE DESIRE
vs. "DANICING" DON JUAN DESANTO
"LiveWire" Dave Desire has fully recovered from his injuries in
the "Nittany Ladder Match" three weeks ago and will be making his
first University Park Title defense against a very worthy challenger
in "Dancing" Don Juan Desanto. When he climbed the ladder to retrieve
the University Park Title at "Pain State," Desire became only the
second man in NWF history to hold the Triple Crown: the NWF
Heavyweight, University Park, and Tag Titles. Even though those are
great accomplishments and will look good on Desire's resume, those
accomplishments will mean nothing to Desanto. Desanto is a free
spirit, a man who has a lot of fun in the ring, but at the same time
he can get serious and put a big hurting on you. In addition to his
size and strength, Desanto is quite agile as well, with the moonsault
being a big part of his arsenal. Desire also is quick, and he will
need every bit of his quickness, plus some toughness and ring smarts,
if he wants to hold onto his gold.

You can expect more information and insight about VIP as it draws
closer. You will not want to miss all of the excitement, all the
pageantry, all the glitz that is VIP!

News from the Big 3: THURSDAY, APRIL 13, 2000

USA NETWORKS SUES WWF, VIACOM, CBS
WILMINGTON, Del., April 12 (Reuters) - The USA Cable division of USA
Networks Inc. has sued World Wrestling Federation Entertainment Inc.,
Viacom Inc. and CBS Corp. to enforce a first refusal right intended
to allow USA to continue broadcasting WWF wrestling matches.

In papers filed Wednesday in the Delaware Court of Chancery, USA
alleged that the Viacom/CBS offer, which included exploitation rights
for publishing, motion pictures, and theme park events, ``represents
a transparent and unlawful attempt by WWFE, Viacom and CBS to
frustrate USA's contractual rights.''

USA said ``WWFE has no right to force USA to match the terms of the
Viacom/CBS 'offer' addressing such different subject matters in order
to exercise its rights of first refusal with respect to'' the series
USA now distributes.

The series, which consists of ``Raw is War,'' cable's most popular
programme, WWF Livewire,`` WWF Superstars,'' and ``Sunday Night
Heat,'' represents one of USA's principal assets, court papers say.

USA, which has broadcast WWF programming for nearly 20 years, claims
that its right to broadcast the wrestling matches is now extended for
five years because of USA's agreement Wednesday to match what it
considers the applicable components of the Viacom/CBS offer.

USA has asked the court to act on an expedited basis to block the
defendants from acting to violate USA's agreement with WWFE, to void
any agreement among WWFE, CBS and Viacom, and to compel WWFE to act
in accordance with its agreement with USA. A CBS spokesman said the
company had decided to decline to comment. No one at Viacom or WWFE
could be reached for comment.

Meanwhile USA Networks said it has matched a rival offer for WWF
programming rights from Viacom Inc. and CBS Corp., which plan to
merge. USA Cable said that in exercising its first-refusal rights,
its cable rights for WWF programming will be protected for five
years. Viacom and CBS, which are awaiting regulatory approval, were
trying to lure the highly-rated wrestling programming to the CBS-
owned TNN cable channel.

MIKE AWESOME TO JOB TONIGHT
Mike Awesome will lose the ECW World Title tonight in Indianapolis to
an undetermined wrestler at this point as an agreement with ECW and
WCW for his appearance on Nitro this past Monday night. Awesome was
cleared to appear on Nitro with strict guidelines: near the end of
the program, in plain street clothes, without the ECW World Title, no
badmouthing ECW, and the commentators were to refer to him as
the "ECW World Champion" so it would not make ECW look like small
potatoes.

However in the latest developments, apparently ECW was unhappy with
the way WCW used Mike Awesome, and that they failed to live up to
part of their obligations. At Thunder tapings Awesome was prevented
from appearing on camera.

No word as to what this means, but Awesome is still slated to do the
JOB tonight, and a hot rumor is that Sandman will become the new ECW
Champion. This will set up a match between Sandman and Rhino at
Hardcore Heaven in Milwaukee.

Keepin It Real...A Night of New Blood
by B-Real

Well Monday night sure was interesting, wasn't it? Between another
solid effort from the folks at Titan, and a Nitro that was unlike
anything we have ever seen WCW produce before, Monday offered a lot
of action to digest. I haven't really been on the Net for awhile(new
job, yay me!), so I am not sure of the reaction it got, but I was
entertained by Nitro, if only for the Kidman/Hogan angle. Enough of
the introductory phase, let's take a look at the two shows, in a
format that has been the norm for this column as of late.

NITRO NOTICES
Russo and Bischoff. Bischoff and Russo. Who would have ever thought
that these two men would team up in an attempt to restore WCW's share
of the marketplace? I have never liked Bischoff as an onscreen
character, but something about the promo he cut on Monday struck me
the right way. This is how the young vs old angle should have been
done last summer. You know you cracked a smile when Russo was busting
on Flair, and when Bischoff "shot" on Page. While it is a work/shoot,
it makes for a much more interesting atmosphere, where seemingly
anything can happen. That's exactly what WCW needs right now:
unpredictable booking. It's what got the WWF back on track, and it
has kept ECW at the forefront of the game, originality-wise.

They finally gave us a conclusion to the Hummer angle. Internet fans
can now drop the subject forever. Thank God.

Booker T and Vampiro look to be in store for big pushes, and if
you've ever read this column, you know I have been crying for this
for a long, long time. Booker is in his mid 30's, and Vamp is about
31 or so, so these men can not be considered young, but they are new
blood, and they have what it takes to be on or near the top. Maybe
Booker can restore some respectability to the now worthless US or TV
titles, with the other one going Vamp's way. I liked the punking of
Sting, who hasn't done a damn thing worthwhile since early '98.
Brothers in paint my ass.

Mike Awesome. In WCW. How can that not be a typo? I hope he thought
long and hard about this decision, giving up the World title of one
organization to join the ranks of another in a stage where no one is
established. Could go either way I guess. Best of luck to the big
guy, but I don't want to hear any cries if he gets misused. What does
this say about the worth of being ECW champion? Hopefully a more
suitable champion will come out of this mess.

Kidman beat Hulk Hogan's ass. What more could a smart mark ask for?
Hopefully this will lead to the farewell Hogan job-o-rama, or more
suitably, jobbermania.

RAW VISIONS
Vince calls out The Rock on his anal fascination. About time.
However, mucho props to Rocky for the gushing blade job, in an effort
to get even more heel heat for The Game, Triple H. That has always
been the best thing about the people's champion, his ability to be a
team player. I don't think you would have seen Shawn Michaels doing
that a few years ago. If Michaels ever does make that big-time
comeback, and don't bet against it, it better be against one of these
two, or else it would be a huge letdown. Who would you want to see
HBK face?

LATINO HEAT! Eddy breaks free of the crowd, and becomes a star in the
process. He is getting great heel reaction, and could prove to be the
most valuable of The Radicals. I always knew he had it in him to be a
great heel, because if you saw him as a Gringo Loco in Mexico, you
would have thought he was Satan himself.

Taka finally gets a high profile match, and it actually appeared that
he was going to win, even though we all knew that there was no chance
in hell it would happen. What a great way to elevate the second best
wrestler in the federation(guess who's first?). Maybe now both Taka
and Funaki can be seen as more than a side-show attraction, and be
allowed to showcase the skills that have made them legends around
certain wrestling circles.

Other than this stuff, RAW was average. 'Nuff said.
