NWF News: TUESDAY, APRIL 11, 2000

Nittany Wrestling Federation presents:
NWF: RETRIBUTION
results from Friday, April 7, 2000
White Building, Penn State campus

Last week, the NWF executive committee had announced plans for a
special four-man elimination tournament to crown the #1 contender for
Tommy Golden's NWF Heavyweight Championship. The winner was to go to
face Golden at VIP: Very Intense Punishment, later this month for the
NWF Title. But due to the physical toll of the Nittany Ladder Match
at "Pain State" two weeks ago, Golden was forced to have knee surgery
that will put him out of action until sometime after April. This also
put him in violation of the NWF's rule that all titles must be
defended within a one-month period, and the NWF executive committee
was forced to strip Tommy Golden of the title. They also decreed that
the tournament that was to crown his opponent at "VIP" was now to be
for the vacant NWF Title.

The show began when "Nittany Lion" Nick Mason made his entrance to
the ring. Mason was making his first return to the NWF since February
11. He got on the mic and talked about how the Penn State mascot had
won a recent ESPN.com poll for best mascot. Then he introduced the
newest Nittany Lion mascot Chuck and said he would like to present
him with a certificate on behalf of the NWF. Before he gave him the
certificate, Mason said that being a former Nittany Lion for two
years himself, he knew what Chuck would have to go through and what
would be expected of him. He asked Chuck to demonstrate some of the
mascot's trademark behaviors, such as push-ups. Mason then suddenly
attacked Chuck, screaming "You don't know what you're getting
yourself into!" and other comments to illustrate his frustrations
about not being appreciated and feeling cheated by the NWF. Finally
Yutzak Arafat came down to the ring to make the save. The two men had
a stare off and Yutzak questioned where Nick's head where was, but
Mason replied by saying that he was just under a lot of stress and
apologized before. A skeptical Arafat left the ring, as did Mason,
and the first match was set to begin.

ROUND #1: "TOO PHAT" YUTZAK ARAFAT (w/CAMEL CANDY) vs. "AS SEEN ON
TV" JOE RULES
Yutzak Arafat beat Joe Rules in a 1st round tournament match, but the
match was not without incident as Mason came down at ringside to make
his presence felt in the match. He tried to interfere against Arafat
by holding a chair up against the ropes. Rules attempted to whip
Arafat into the ropes but Arafat reversed it and Rules took the
punishment. Arafat then executed the Sitar DDT on Rules and got the 1-
2-3 to advance to the finals of the NWF Title tournament. After the
match, Mason attacked Arafat with a chair, blindsiding him. After
awhile Arafat got back to his feet, but Mason wasn't done as he came
charging back and nailed Arafat from behind again. Arafat had to be
helped back to the locker room, but he would return for the final
match.

NWF TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS: THE DAMNED vs. JOHN BALSAMO & TROY "THE
BOY" BUCHANAN
The NWF Tag Team Champions "The Damned" Mad Dog and Draven made their
first defense at "Retribution" against a returning Troy "The Boy"
Buchanan and John Balsamo, a newcomer to the NWF. Draven and Mad Dog
won the belts against former champions Rick Silver and Joe Rules
at "Pain State" just two weeks prior. Buchanan and Balsamo made their
way down to the ring first, with Balsamo sporting the colors of Italy
and waving tiny Italian flags. Then The Damned made their entrance
and at first Buchanan and Balsamo wanted to forfeit the match because
they were afraid to step into the ring against the frightening tag
champs. However they soon changed their minds and agreed to fight the
match. The Damned dominated Balsamo and Buchanan, and would have won
the match quickly had it not been for the interference of Nick Mason
who started the match as a guest commentator for NWF television.
Mason took every opportunity to interfere against The Damned, but
despite his actions The Damned still won the match and retained their
NWF Tag Titles. Meanwhile there seemed to be some friction between
between Buchanan and Balsamo, as Buchanan refused to tag in on a
couple of occasions when Balsamo was desperate to tag out.

ROUND #1: "NITTANY LION" NICK MASON vs. DON JUAN DESANTO
Before the match, Mason came to the ring and said that from now on he
would be known as "Zero Gravity" Mason Cage, the name that he has
been using throughout the indy circuits. He said the days of
the "Nittany Lion" were over. Mason Cage's opponent in the first
round was Don Juan Desanto. Desanto definitely had the size and
strength advantage over Cage. Also, Desanto was quick and agile in
the match for a big man, but Mason was quicker. He also displayed a
new intensity in the ring, bending the rules and doing whatever it
took to defeat Desanto. At one point Desanto tried to go upstairs for
the moonsault, but Mason nailed him with a low blow. Then Mason Cage
climbed the top turnbuckle and executed the "Zero Gravity" shooting
star press that finished off Desanto. The final match for the NWF
Title was set, as "Zero Gravity" Mason Cage would be taking on "Too
Phat" Yutzak Arafat.

SPECIAL CHALLENGE MATCH: FUMAR vs. REFEREE TOM KENNEDY
This match came about when Fumar and Referee Tom got into a
confrontation after "Pain State" and had to be separated from each
other. Fumar took exception to Referee Tom trying to climb the ladder
and retrieve the titles during the "Nittany Ladder" tag match and had
some not-so-kind words for the NWF official. The history was not
limited to just that incident either, as Fumar pasted Referee Tom
with a brutal chair shot a few shows back. It was not known what kind
of wrestling skills Referee Tom would have coming into this match,
but he would definitely have to give it his all if he expected to
defeat the former two-time University Park Champion, Fumar. The match
started off in the ring, but over time it degenerated into a hardcore
match. They brawled on the outside, and up into the crowd. Referee
Tom even put Fumar through a table, but still Fumar would not give
up. The two men then entered the ring and each man delived several
brutal chair shots to the other. Finally it was Fumar who won the
match when he executed the Fumacity and got the 1-2-3. This was one
of the most brutal matches in the history of the NWF, and it showed
that even a referee can rise to the occasion and give the fans an
entertaining match.

NWF TITLE TOURNAMENT FINALS: "ZERO GRAVITY" MASON CAGE vs. "TOO PHAT"
YUTZAK ARAFAT (w/CAMEL CANDY)
If fans thought that the match between Fumar and Referee Tom was
brutal, they hadn't seen anything yet. These two former friends, Cage
and Arafat, locked up in a match that had everything. It had
scientific wrestling, it had high-flying, it had hardcore wrestling,
and it had some insane bumps by both men. In fact, not long into the
match we saw Joe Rules and Fumar from the Rutgers Revolution make
their way to ringside, and at that point we knew that things were not
looking good for the former NWF Champion Arafat. At one point Arafat
battled Fumar on the outside the ring, and inside the ring Cage began
to set up a ladder and two tables. Joe Rules then attacked Camel
Candy, putting her into a sleeper. He then dragged Candy's
unconscious body into the ring and was about to give her
the "Rikishi" treatment against the turnbuckle when Arafat returned
to the ring and attacked Rules. Meanwhile Fumar was now going after
Referee Tom once again. He tried to execute a hurricarana off of the
top turnbuckle to the outside of the ring and put Tom through a
table, but instead Tom launched Fumar off the top turnbuckle and
threw the table with a sickening thud. As Fumar lie amongst the
broken pieces of table Cage and Arafat were still going at it,
although now outside of the ring. At one point Cage climbed to the
top of the bleachers and jumped off the back of them onto Arafat in a
leap that had to be at least 15 feet. The match found its way back
into the ring, where Arafat speared Mason Cage through a table as he
was climbing a ladder in an attempt to hit the shooting star press on
Camel Candy. Rules then distracted Arafat, and the brawl once again
continued outside the ring. The ring was a cluttered mess by this
point, and the fans were having a hard time keeping track of all of
the action. Cage intriduced a chair into the ring, where he was going
to hit a face plant on Arafat, only for Arafat to reverse it into a
short powerbomb. Arafat then signaled for Da Bomb, but Fumar
distracted Ref Tom, allowing Rules to hit Arafat with the NWF Title.
Mason then stunned gun Arafat through a table, and Rules held his
legs for the 1-2-3, allowing Cage to become the New NWF Champion. But
before leaving Arafat nailed Rules and Fumar with a chair and then
hit Da Bom on Cage, much to the enjoyment of NWF fans. Arafat then
went on the outside and set up a tabel, and he and Ref Tom set Fumar
on it, only for both men to climb to opposite turnbuckles and hit
stereo flying elbow drops on Fumar,
destroying the table. Arafat then grabbed the ring mic and challenged
Mason Cage to a 2 out of three fall match for the NWF Title at "VIP"
later this month, to which Cage accepted and the match was set.

Wrestling fans, you have only one more chance to see the NWF this
semester as the next NWF show will be called "VIP: Very Intense
Punishment" and held later this month on a date and time to be
announced. Last year VIP was the biggest card of the year for the
NWF, and it figures to be just as important this year as well. This
figures to be a night where all of the bitter rivalries and feuds of
this year will come to a head. Already confirmed for VIP will be new
NWF Champion "Zero Gravity" Mason Cage defending the title
against "Too Phat" Yutzak Arafat. Also Dave Desire making his first
University Park Title defense against #1 contender Little Dixie. More
matches are sure to be announced as VIP draws closer. You will not
want to miss all of the excitement, all the pageantry, all the glitz
that is VIP!

excerpt from Dave Meltzer's Wrestling Observer:

MIKE AWESOME SITUATION
*Regarding Mike Awesome, all day there were faxes going back and
forth between ECW and WCW. To avoid any possibility of legal action,
WCW bought out a contract release for Awesome for a term reported in
the six figures. ECW's demands were that Awesome be referred to as
ECW world champion on the show, that they plug his upcoming ECW title
defense (he is coming to Indianapolis on Thursday to drop the title
in the ring although we don't know who will be getting it) which they
really didn't but can say they did, and that he appear in street
clothes.

SHANE DOUGLAS RE-SIGNS WITH WCW
Dave Meltzer is reporting that Shane Douglas signed a two-year deal
before Nitro on Monday morning. On Nitro he attacked Ric Flair during
a promo while Scott Steiner had him distracted. The two men that
fought a match in street clothes, which Flair won by DQ when Vince
Russo attacked Flair with a baseball bat.

BEING ACOST-ED
by AJ Acosta
April 11, 2000

It€  '²s me, it€  '²s me€  '¥ it€  '²s that D-O-Double G€  '¥ oh
wait. Sorry. Ahem.
Welcome to another edition of the column that€  '²s chock full of
knowledge, criticism, and sarcasm€  '¥ Being Acost-ed. In this
week€  '²s
column I€  '²ll be talking about the stellar NWF show: Retribution,
the
so-called new era of Nitro, and believe it or not, Doink The Clown.

CAGED LION

Finally. Finally. Finally. Finally, Nick Mason, AKA "Nittany Lion
Nick" has wizened up and seen the true error of his ways. Nick has
been panhandling responses from the crowd as a goody-two shoes for
far too long. He has been associated with Yutzak Arafat for far too
long. Thank God he€  '²s seen the light.

NWF Retribution will be remembered for a lot of things€  '¥ it was a
helluva card with some great matches. But for me it will be
remembered for the night Nick Mason got a clue. Tired of being under
appreciated by the NWF Championship committee while undeserving
nimrods like Arafat and Dave Desire got all the title shots, Nick
lashed out€  '¥ and he lashed out hard.

It all started when he suckered some jabroni named Chuck, who
incidentally is Penn State€  '²s new "Nittany Lion", by presenting
him
with a certificate of appreciation from the NWF. Just as I was about
ready to puke from this disturbing show of sportsmanship, Nick
delivered a swift kick to the gut and continued laying the, to borrow
a phrase, smackdown on his candy ass.

And it only got better from there. After Yutzak Arafat cheated and
swindled Joe Rules in the Semi Finals of the NWF Title Tournament,
Nick attacked Yutzak un-mercilessly with a chair. Now wanting to be
known as "Zero Gravity" Mason Cage (Which is exponentially better
than "Nittany Lion Nick"), he verbally berated the NWF, its fans, and
of course Yutzak.

Eventually, at the end of the evening, after blowing through Don Juan
Desantos, Mason met up with Arafat in the Finals. Brutal cannot
describe this main event! Mason took out all of his aggression and
frustration out on Yutzak in that match€  '¥ and showed more of a
killer
instinct that I never knew he possessed.

I€  '²ve always liked Nick€  '¥

NEW ERA

Well tonight marked the so-called "New Era" of Monday Nitro/WCW. I
must say€  '¥ it€  '²s a DEFINATE improvement€  '¥ but I wouldn€  '²t
exactly say
that WCW is going to win the ratings war. But it€  '²s a start.

We€  '²ve been hearing rumors about the new vs old angle€  '¥ and how
it was
going to play out. Most people assumed that Bischoff would lead the
old and Russo would lead the new. They swerved us and both Russo and
Bischoff control the "new blood". Let€  '²s take a look at some of
the
pros and cons of the new era€  '¥

PRO The new set looks pretty cool. Far better than the previous
one€  '¥
I still for one prefer the original Nitro set, but it€  '²s a step
up.

CON Russo and Bischoff are on TV. Granted Russo works better on TV
than Bischoff does, but that€  '²s still not saying much. Bischoff
thinks
he€  '²s the world€  '²s biggest bad ass when in truth most
cruiserweights
could take him without much effort.

PRO Uh€  '¥ the new vs old thing is great and all but€  '¥ why are
the new
guys the heels??? Isn€  '²t the whole point that these guys have held
the
young talent down? Why are the young guys heels? Argh.

CON Tank Abbot beating up Mark Madden. Now normally, this would be a
good thing as I despise Mark Madden. But Abbot tore off Madden€  '²s
shirt while he was beating him up. Good lord. It was the most
disgusting thing I€  '²ve ever seen. He had more rolls than bakery.

PRO Kidman VS Hogan! Now I don€  '²t like Hogan one bit, but seeing
him
actually work against someone with whom he supposedly has heat with
like Kidman was great!! I€  '²m sure that 90% of things Kidman said
were
from the heart and not from the script. Who cares if it wasn€  '²t a
real
match€  '¥ it kicked ass in my opinion.

CON Looks like the Great Jeff Jarrett Push is far from over.

PRO Ric Flair VS Shane Douglas. These two guys have got some
legitimate heat as far as I know and it was actually pretty cool
seeing them take each other on. Plus, Russo swings a pretty mean bat.

CON Shawn Stasiak? Who gives a crap?

PRO The fact that they seem to be preparing Scott Steiner for a major
push. Good. He€  '²s way better than Jarrett so I€  '²m assuming
there
leading to something big with him in the future. He could be the top
heel in the company without even trying.

CON Mike Awesome. Way to bite the hand that feeds you Mike.

PRO Bret Hart€  '²s entrance at the very end. They cut the show off
right
on time€  '¥ where does Bret stand?!! It was actually good drama. It
impressed me, and I€  '²m actually really interested to see where
Bret
stands.

CON DDP VS Jarrett? What the hell kind of a PPV Main Event is that?
Ugh.

All in all, I€  '²d say WCW scored big with this. Tonight€  '²s Nitro
actually had me flipping back and forth between channels€  '¥
something I
haven€  '²t done in a while. I€  '²ll give it a thumbs up, especially
since
RAW wasn€  '²t anything all that special. Now, the tricky part is, is
to
keep a cynical guy like me happy€  '¥ and keep me interested, or that
channel is going to stay on USA for the most part.

RAW IS AJ

Well next week, Raw heads to the Bryce Jordan Center in State
College, PA and you can bet your ass that I€  '²ll be in attendance.
While I paid practically nothing for hella cool seats€  '¥ ok I DID
pay
nothing for hella cool seats€  '¥ let€  '²s hope that next week€  '²s
RAW is a
good one. Last time they came here it wasn€  '²t anything special,
with a
lackluster main event (HHH VS Test). And tonight€  '²s RAW wasn€  '²t
anything all that special either.

I do have to say that I€  '²m glad that Vince admits his own mistake
bringing up glaring examples such as the Gobbledy Gooker, Doink The
Clown and Bastion Booger. Although I do have to say that ORIGINAL
Doink gimmick was damn cool. I mean, an evil clown who came out to
circus music that immediately turned into creepy, scary music with
screams of pain interspersed throughout it. I don€  '²t like clowns.
They
creep me out. And the original Doink (played then by Matt Borne) was
great. He€  '²d play tricks on all the faces, and severely beat Crush
with a car battery once (if I recall correctly). Then along came
Doink the Face, complete with little Dink€  '¥ and it all went to
hell.

I digress. I do have to say there were some decent matches tonight on
RAW€  '¥ HHH VS Taka was surprisingly really good, and it had me
pulling
for Taka, even though I KNEW he wouldn€  '²t win, I suspended
disbeleif
and was marking out.

The Eddy VS Jericho match was damn good as well. Not as good as it
could be on a PPV with more time, but for a RAW match it was
excellent. I think its funny how Jericho was in WCW for what, 3 years
or so? And the marketing geniuses at WCW gave him one shirt, and
Bischoff tossed him a couple of Cruiserweight belts and a TV title
reign, even though Jericho€  '²s segments at the time were the only
reason to watch Nitro. Now in the WWF, Y2J has been around less than
9 months and already has 2 t-shirts, 2 I/C Title Reigns and a
European title reign, and not only shared the spotlight with the Rock
and HHH on the WrestleMania 2000 promo poster, but is the only
wrestler featured on the Backlash promo poster. Hmmm€  '¥ curious.

Plus€  '¥. Latino Heat cracks me up. I smell a t-shirt in the works
for
Eddy.

Other than that though, RAW was pretty lackluster. The Main event was
pretty lame€  '¥ Rock VS Bull & Bossman? Granted, Bull Buchanan is
pretty
talented, but why is he main eventing a RAW this early, when he€  '²s
really not that good.

Oh well. C€  '²est la vie.
