Runners,

Despite the soggy conditions, we had a nice turnout for Saturdya
morning's Beginner's Game Lands Run. We did two loops at a nice easy
pace. The first loop, about 3.8 miles, was to give everyone the lay
of the land and point out a few landmarks. The second, about 3.6
miles, was to tack on a few more miles for those who could run
farther, and to show some of the interconnections in the myriad trails there.

A couple clarifications for those who were there: I kept mentioning
Range Road as one of the major landmarks. If you get lost and find
your way there, you can get out. Head to the northeast and you'll end
up in a little hamlet called Scotia, near Circleville and Scotia
Roads. As we stood on Range Road, I said the road is very flat, but
didn't get to why this is important. It turns out that there is
another gravel-paved road in the vicinity of where we often run. It
is *not* flat. If you get lost and find a road that has a fair grade
to it, that's the other road. Head downhill and you will reach Range
Road, where that other (nameless) road ends. The Game Lands trail map
on the NVRC web site shows these two roads as black lines. Range Road
traverses the Game Lands from the southwest to the northeast. The
other road ends up as a private lane after it leaves the Game Lands
at the top of the aforementioned hill. It runs from Range Road to the
northwest.

e-game-lands-176-trail-map

The other question had to do with hunters. Yes, hunters do frequent
the Game Lands and can be there at almost any time. But most times of
the year, there are no hunters, or those that are there are shooting
at the range or training their dogs. Most of the big hunting seasons
are in the Fall and early Winter (except Spring turkey season, in
April and May. I keep a schedule of hunting seasons on the NVRC web site:

They allow transfers or deferments but I'd rather transfer if possible since I'm not positive I'll be in this area next year. If someone would like my registration, I'll transfer it for the cost of the registration fee ($88) plus half of the transfer fee ($12.50 from each of us). So I'll settle on an even $100 if someone wants it, otherwise I'll do the deferment. Hopefully one of you would like to run it though, I've heard it's a good one!

Runners,

With no local races this weekend, this could end up being a big weekend for group runs. Here’s the first on the calendar. I’m sure more will follow:

Marty Mazur will lead a beginner's game lands trail run in State Game Lands 176 on Saturday morning. It's your chance to check out the Game Lands and get a tour at a nice easy pace. Marty will lead runners on two different loops of about 3-4 miles each. If you aren't up to 6-8 miles, then just stay for the first loop. Meet Marty at the Patton Woods lot at 8:30 AM.

This will be a beginner run. All are welcome as long as you can complete a 3-4 mile run without walking.

If you need directions to the Patton Woods lot, here they are.

Marty.

Hey, Jerr.
Just wanted to let you know picnic details.  It is next Tuesday at Spring Creek Park.  We will be at pavilion #2. Start time: 6:00 or 6:30PM (standard NVRC meeting time).  Bill of fare: pork BBQ, grilled corn, baked beans, chips, and whatever other members bring as their covered dish to share.  I have sodas, iced tea, and water purchased.  You may want to remind members and their families that there is plenty of play equipment as well as basketball and tennis courts.  Some kids like to wade in the creek as well.  Tell them to come prepared for their chosen activity (i.e. basketballs, tennis ball and rackets, and swim suits and towels).  You may want to forward this information to Marty Mazur so that he can post an invitation and reminder about the meeting.
Thanks, Jerry.

P.S. We should have hot coals for anyone that would like a burger instead.

Hi everyone,

We're going to do another trail run on Tues at 6pm. We're meeting at the Tussey
Mountain parking lot (across from the go-carts), heading up Lonberger Path and
coming back on Bear Meadows Rd. It's about 3 miles each way. The trail is a
bit easier than the one we did at Shingletown Gap...not so many rocks. If
anyone doesn't want to try another trail, an out & back on Bear Meadows Rd is
also an option...

See you tomorrow,
Dave

Hi everyone,

Since we don't have a wahoo workout this Tues. (the official workout is the all-comers meet on Thurs.) a group of us are doing a short trail run instead.  Anyone's welcome to come.  We'll probably do a 2 or 3 mile out & back on Shingletown Trail and then, for anyone that still wants more, explore a few other trails.

We're meeting at 6pm at Shingletown Gap.  To get there from State College, go down S. Atherton to Boalsburg and turn right on 45.  Go about 2 miles and turn left on Mountain Rd.  There's a parking lot on the left after about a mile.  Here's a map. <http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&q=Shingletown+Gap,+Centre,+Pennsylvania+16801&sll=40.785189,-77.867334&sspn=0.010788,0.016587&ie=UTF8&cd=1&geocode=FXHSbQIdppxc-w&split=0&ll=40.753889,-77.817707&spn=0.043172,0.066347&z=14>

It looks like we might get rain tomorrow, so be prepared to get a bit muddy.

See you tomorrow,

It looks like we might get rain tomorrow, so be prepared to get a bit muddy.

See you tomorrow,
Dave

[sorry for the late notice... email from my gmail account to yahoo is bouncing
for some reason]

A group of us are planning to run a loop starting at Colyer Lake, heading down
Treaster Kettle to Thickhead Mountain Rd, and back along Boal Gap Rd.

Does anyone know what Thickhead Mountain Rd. is like? Google Maps thinks it's a
normal road, but the Purple Lizard Map thinks 2-3 miles of it are trail. Trail
is ok, but I'm wondering what the terrain is like, e.g. is it bikeable...

Most of us will be starting at 9am from the Colyer Lake parking lot on Lake Rd.
I'll also be doing the loop, probably in the reverse direction starting at
6:30am. We'll be around a 10 min. pace.

Thanks,
Dave D.

Hi all,
Is anyone else planning to run the Sloppy Socks 5K in Hollidaysburg on Saturday?  I pre-registered with a friend who now can't make it, so I'd love some company to show some NVRC pride. If anyone was thinking about going, but doesn't have a ride, I can probably drive you too.

Just let me know,
