As you all know, the club was founded during the 1972-73 school year, so
this upcoming school year is the club's 40th anniversary. So we put
together a commemorative t-shirt: black cotton t, with the crest on the
left front breast, and the NU Logo on the back neck, plus the number "40"
on the back, like a player's number. (See attached).





The cost is $20 per shirt. In that number is a $14.50 donation to the
club. You can have any size, so long as it is medium, large, or extra
large. (I don't know of any small size NU Rugby players-Tez, maybe?). We
can do XX too, but we would have to wait for a re-order. We would be happy
to mail them to you at no extra charge.





Also, the club would like to make a strong showing at next fall's
homecoming parade. A choir of players and ex-players singing rugby songs?
A demonstration of the Maori Haka? An NU Rugby Kazoo Band?





We can discuss the potential at the social after the Alumni Match. Fat
Cats-this is our year! The undergrads haven't played in three weeks. They
are vulnerable. Even if you don't play, please come to hang out. We will
go to the rugby house afterwards (Asbury and Simpson, by the Civic Center).
I will make sure they get a keg of good beer, and I am bringing some
mini-burritos from Flaco's Tacos.

Hi everyone -

I just wanted to share some behind the scenes info about the great work that is being done by Tony Kosinski and Jim Hebson.

These guys are doing so much for this club, and I know people know that, but I don't think people appreciate the extent of their work.

1) We had discussed getting 501(c) 3 status for the club before this alumni game in May 2011 (after last alumni game).  It faltered a bit, but Tony picked up the ball about a month ago, learned all about the requirements, filled out the forms, mailed the forms to Ray Ryan with all the information filled out so all we needed to do is sign and date, coordinated with me and Ray several times to make sure that we didn't drop the ball, and Ray got it to Jim for filing with the Secretary of State in IL.  Tony included two cashiers checks, one to help with expedited processing of the request, from his own pocket.  He wrote up a charter for the board, along with rules that say if we get tired of Jim, we can very easily vote him off with a quorum of 3 and have that be binding.  All in all, a Herculean effort that no one knows about, but everyone will benefit from because we'll have tax exemption of our donations to a budding endowment effort.  So let's all give a HUGE thank you to Tony in the form of passing him the ball on every 3rd phase on Saturday.  Tony - you're welcome.

2) Jim Hebson has been scheming up ways to brand the NU alumni on different merch for the past year.  We didn't even have a division to play in for the Milwaukee summer 7's last year and he still went ahead and bought a bunch of awesome pink shirts for the Pussy Cats.  Then he decides that he's going to call the organizers of the tourney and get them to reintroduce the senior division just so we have a place to play - even though we annually break the rules with a team that has 1/2 the people under the age of 35.  He has worked directly with the undergrads to set up the post-party this year and provide his delicious Flaco's Tacos (new location open at 46 E Chicago Ave - this guy is obviously terrible at self-promotion, so I'm helping him out).  This allows a venue for undergrads to hang out and enjoy discussions with the alumni without worrying about getting into bars, etc. Oh yeah, and then he put together an idea to give $15 profit per t-shirt to the club.  I'm pretty sure I've counted over 20 requests thus far, so there's an extra $300 for the endowment.  So everyone give a big THANK YOU to Jim by letting the undergrads run through your personal tackle and into Jim instead.  Jim loves to tackle - Jim -- you're welcome.

You guys are keeping the train afloat (mismatched aphorism intended, use of the word aphorism doubly-intended) and everyone should really be thankful that we have these great guys heading up these efforts.

Well, the annual alumni match went very well for the old boys this year.  We got
an infusion of speed from some more recent grads and as always, the pack
controlled the ball and tempo of the match. Adam Steinbrunner managed our
attacks and distributed the ball like a champ. Final score was in the range of
88 to 65 in our favor.

We also had the initial board meeting of the NU Rugby Association NFP Board of
Directors.  Minutes will be posted when available but the highlights were:

Bob Fanelli is working on our on-line presence to attract additional members.

We are going to have a Homecoming event in the fall to celebrate 40 years of
Rugby at NU.  Further details to come.

We are an official tax-exempt charitable organization with our own account.  If
anyone would like to donate, checks can be sent to me at my home and made out to
"NU Rugby Assocaiton NFP" or given to any of the club officers. - Ray Ryan, Adam
Steinbrunner, or Jim Hebson.  My home address is 51 Cornell Ave, Larkspur CA

The T-shirts Jim Hebson made were almost sold out over the weekend and raised
$500 for the club.  For anyone who still needs to order one, please e-mail Jim
directly with sizes and quantity.  Even if you replied on this site - Jim needs
a INDIVIDUAL e-mail from you to confirm and arrange payment and delivery.  It's
good to hear from so many of you but we don't want to take up any more room in
you in-boxes than we have to.

Thanks again to all the guys who came out and played or just came out to enjoy
the day.  We had a great time and made a lot of progress toward our goal of
supporting Rugby at NU.

Some of you are aware, some aren't, but back in December I spent 5 days on a cruise ship in the Caribbean filming an episode of a dating reality TV show for Lifetime.  The show originally began airing episodes on Tuesdays at 9pm, but due to putrid ratings they decided to cancel 3 episodes and group the remaining 3 they decided to air into one 3-hour morning block.  Long story short, I have been told that my 1-hour episode will air this Friday morning at 9am Central Time on Lifetime (for those of you on the west coast, the time may be different).  If any of you are ineterested in seeing me embarrass myself, I would suggest setting up the old DVR.
