Culpepper headed for Miami
The Vikings' efforts to trade quarterback Daunte Culpepper appear
successful.

Two months of increasing acrimony came to an end Tuesday when the
Vikings traded quarterback Daunte Culpepper to Miami, reportedly for
a second-round draft pick.
The team confirmed that the trade has been agreed to in principal,
but a team spokesman would not confirm the compensation. That
reluctance indicates the price tag might be contingent on a physical
that Culpepper is scheduled to take today in Miami.
Team officials offered no other comment this afternoon. Observers
have assumed that they planned to install veteran Brad Johnson as the
starter when and if Culpepper departed, but coach Brad Childress has
never confirmed that expectation. The Vikings played host Tuesday to
free agent quarterback Craig Nall, a possibility to back up Johnson
in that scenario.
The timing of the deal presumably allows the Vikings to avoid paying
Culpepper a $6 million roster bonus due March 24, but it was not
immediately clear whether the Dolphins would pay that sum or if
Culpepper had agreed to defer or reduce it.
Culpepper, the 11th overall pick in the 1999 draft, is recovering
from surgery to repair three torn ligaments in his right knee.
Although the Vikings and Dolphins have been discussing a trade for
more than a month, before today the Vikings were unwilling to let the
Dolphins conduct an independent examination of his condition.
Culpepper has spoken several times in recent days with Dolphins coach
Nick Saban, and the deal was finalized this morning when Saban was
unwilling to meet the contract demands of free agent Drew Brees. As a
result, Culpepper will return to the state where he grew up (near
Orlando) and played college football, at the University of Central
Florida.
Culpepper was a Pro Bowl performer as recently as 2004, but his star
with the Vikings has dropped sharply since last season. He threw
twice as many interceptions (12) as touchdowns (6) last season before
suffering the devastating injury Oct. 30 at Carolina. Johnson led the
Vikings to a 7-2 finish after taking over for Culpepper.
Culpepper also faces misdemeanor charges stemming from an alleged
Oct. 6 sex party on Lake Minnetonka. The Vikings turned down at least
three requests this winter to renegotiate his contract, and Culpepper
asked the team last week to trade him or terminate his contract.
The trade comes one year after the Vikings shipped Pro Bowl receiver
Randy Moss to Oakland.
