Has any site been picked yet? I know that we talked about a house? Terry & I were researching a little bit and here is one option for us. http://www.vrbo.com/178001 Karl seemed to be the master of vacation rentals when we were talking. Just trying to get us thinking about spring, since we are getting dumped on with snow and freezing temps.

I am going to go with weekend of March 28-29. If that won't work for people, please respond by this Friday. If I have to change dates, there is a good chance I won't be able to attend this year - just too many vacation requests in March and mine would become last priority.
Thanks gang. PS

March 28-29 would work fine for me. If there was any interest in doing it for earlier, and/or combining Vegas with a little spring training action, I'd be open for that as well. (Allegiant flies to both Phoenix and Vegas)

WHERE DID THE WHITE MAN GO WRONG?
Indian Chief, "Two Eagles," was asked by a white government official, "You have observed the white man for 90 years. You've seen his wars and his technological advances. You've seen his progress, and the damage he's done."
The Chief nodded in agreement.
The official continued, "Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did the white man go wrong?"
The Chief stared at the government official for over a minute and then calmly replied. "When white man find land, Indians running it. No taxes, No debt, Plenty buffalo, Plenty beaver, Clean Water; Women did all the work, Medicine man free. Indian man spend all day hunting and fishing; All night having sex."
Then the chief leaned back and smiled. "Only white man dumb enough to think he can improve system like that."

Thanks for the explanation. I'd like keepers to be gone, but I do think they need to be phased out over the length of their "contracts." I think, and always have, that it would be fun to come to the draft and know that EVERY player is available. Just one opinion. Hopefully Terry you didn't take my last post too seriously ... it was meant have some humor in there ... which is tough to show in an email. I was just trying to figure out "why now?" would Terry bring this up. And you did a good job explaining that. Thanks, Rob.
I agree with eveyone else that some good ideas are being thrown out there. Brainstorming to make the league better is something we've done from Day 1 and it's a great to hear new ideas.
P.S. Karl has told me that the living room wall is no longer available for 15 foot wide porn movies. Something about Sarah putting bookcases and furniture there now ??? But, he does have a big screen now in the finished basement. Game on!

For the record, I am likely the original backer of the keeper rules. It didn't gain any support until John posted a ninth-place finish in 2002, gaining a pair of top 15 picks in the last open (2003) draft, and doing a 180 on keepers, when it sailed through. If you are to accuse me of odd timing, you must also John of odd timing.
I still like the keeper rules, and have since become involved in other keeper leagues. However, I am viewing the competitive balance of the league (Seabass finishes 2,1,1,5,1; Targeese finishes 1,2,2,1,8) and thinking things may need to be tweaked a little.
Short story long here, I think it's time for a five-year checkup. I made the proposals not necessarily because I back them and want to get rid of keepers, I want to toss out some fresh ideas for how to make things better. Obviously this system is working for John (3 titles) and I (2 titles), so while on the surface you may find it odd timing, the track record points to the opposite.
We can go back to the old, old days of the league, when the Targeese won 5 years in a row, and narrowly avoided a 6th. We can stick with the new, new days of the league, when the Seabass and Targeese have played catch with the trophy. John and I have the league in a beatdown mode right now.
I do share some of Ken's thinking in that the first round of the draft is looking lackluster. I applaud his independent thinking, when he would willingly give up Pujols, Soriano, and Santana to get back to a full draft. I'll likely have a top 5 pick, and have 8 picks in the first 5 rounds, so I'll be able to load up. I'm not sure why, combined with the fact that I have 6 top prospects locked up for a total of $23, I would want to get rid of the keepers when the system has been working great for me, and will continue to work great for me.
I believed when the keeper system with unlimited transactions was introduced that it would allow teams a better chance to control their destinies and be competitive (free market capitalism). Two truly elite teams have emerged, and I'm not sure things are going to change unless we tweak the system again.
I think John's proposal of limiting transactions to a certain number would be a good step towards this goal. It's up to all of us to decide if we keep the keepers, reduce the keepers to 1 or 2 a year, phase them out, or drop them completely.

The dialogue has been great, and appreciated, in the first twelve
hours. I have uploaded a description of the draft pick trades in
the "Files" section of the Yahoo group
(http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/northstarleague/files). I think
if we did adopt Proposal 2 (blow up the keeper system immediately),
that nullifying all draft pick trades would be necessary. This is a
proposal that can be discussed as well, but I propose it be dependent
on the passing of proposal 2, making it perhaps a Corollary 2.
If enough teams don't like the keeper process, the phase-out may the
best way to go. Again, I encourage extensive debate, and once we have
enough participation, a vote can be called.
I like keepers but my opinion is usually on the low end for being taken
seriously cause everyone just thinks I am Terry's lacky. The only thing I ask
is that if we scrap keepers then all draft picks are returned to thier owners. I
really don't think it would be fair that I gave up my number one pick for a
keeper that I won't get. If the draft order stays as is and we scrap keepers
then so be it, I will adapt. The reason I liked keepers is that it gave us more
time to hang out and it made the trading deadline a day of great anticipation. I
remember Karl once saying that draft weekend was more about hanging out then
"winning". Again it doesn't matter to me other than it means I will be on the
phone longer since I can't attend the draft this year. Just my thoughts.

I am opposed to throwing all keepers in this year, as
I feel that it would not be fair to scrap the keeper
system this year, as some people have tried to build
their core team around them. I for one like the
strategy of the keeper system, you can try to gamble
on young guys, flash in the pans, or producing vets.
You can boom or bust based on your strategy and luck.
I have had several busts and injuries hurt my team in
my short tenure with the league.
I can see problems with the football keeper format,
because there are many more guys picked up in baseball
during the season that aren't incorporated in the
draft unless you consider them your last round pick.
Like I am gambling on Longoria to win a starting gig
with the Rays.
I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to a phase out or
maybe cut down on the number of keepers. The problem
we are running into is that people are stacking up on
positions. We could limit someone to only keeping 1
player per position, so for instance it would prevent
teams from having 2 1b keepers already and causing
shortages per position.
It seems to me that scouting may be even more
essential this year to have a decent draft.
Just my two Lincolns.

I propose we review the keeper legislation again this year, letting all voices be heard. Some of this may be a rehash of previous discussions, but I think a 5-year review is warranted.
One of the original dissenters was Rob Hall, who advocated that all players be available every year. He became "victim" of the process one year when he failed to declare them, and was assigned a trio of keepers by the Triumvirate. There have been various strategies involved, whether to keep superstars or prospects, etc.
After posting the dollar values for players, it's easy to see that even the first round will be more lackluster again. Indeed, this process has led, in part, to the picking of Josh Willingham as a first rounder by yours truly (hey, I won that year, so shush!)
Also, the keeper years have been dominated by the Seabass and Targeese, although both have had a lower finish during that time as
well.
Therefore, I make two proposals
1) Keepers be phased out starting this year. Keepers who have already been signed will remain with their teams through the end of their contracts.
or
2) The keeper process be blown up immediately, and all players are made immediately available.
Continuing as is would be the default, so there is no need for a proposal to continue as is.
These proposals are made to stimulate (hopefully not heated) discussion on the keeper rules. I believe proposal 1 would be most fair if we decide to abandon the keeper rules. However, if there is widespread support for proposal 2, is there a reason we can't abandon it as is?
You're free to post on the NSL Yahoo Group (there is a link on the top of Northstarleague. com - http://sports. groups.yahoo.
com/group/ northstarleague/) until the Yahoo Fantasy Baseball goes live. Last year, this occurred on February 16. I will do my best to ensure that our league number is on the Eastern Seaboard (last year, we were 00936, which is actually San Juan, PR).
Enjoy your scouting, gentlemen! We'll see you in 8 weeks!
I just scratched off all of the keepers from the list, and was very
disappointed with the "leftovers." Some thoughts to consider:
~From SN's Top 300 list:
-17 of the top 25 are keepers
-27 of the top 50 are keepers
-61 of the top 300 are keepers
~If the first round went according to the top 300, Dan Haren would be
the 12th pick. Not likely in our league, but excepting pitchers, that
would make Brian Roberts the 12th pick. In short: Blah.
~There are 12 keeper first baseman. Typically are stacked position,
everyone has grabbed the best, with the ones left over coming off
contracts. Top 5 available: Berkman, Guillen, Lee, Konerko, and
Helton. Again: Blah.
~Several owners have been severely hurt by overpaying for crappy
keepers. While it is a risk/reward system, and $1 players are a great
boon to a team (Justin Verlander, Ryan Braun, Tim Lincecum, Fausto
Carmona are all signed for a buck), other players tanked or are hurt,
but the owners must eat the salary. Keeper salary and actual 2008
salary: Chris Ray $10/$1 (out for the season), Jorge Cantu $18/$1,
Dontrelle Willis $23/$10, Dan Uggla $23/$14, and Octavio Dotel $14/$6.
Quite a price to pay for mediocrity.
~The draft is shorter, but it seems we have shortened it by the best
part: the exciting first round when all players are fair game, when
you can get Chase Utley with the 12th pick. I love the draft. I
wouldn't mind drafting 50 rounds. The shorter draft has been a
letdown for me.
If you're not sure by now which way I want to go with this, I'll tell
you: No more keepers. As to when, I first thought we should phase it
out, as strategy and long term planning are strong factors, but if it
comes down to my vote, I say scrap it now. That's coming from someone
who has 2 of the top 10 and 3 of the top 25 (Pujols, Santana, Soriano.)
Keepers were fun, and brought some continuity, but I say we do to it
what they should've done to the DH "experiment": end it now before it
becomes and institution. Let's hearken back to the old days,
wondering who'll pick who with their first pick, slugging out 25
rounds of bliss, and not sticking Robby with triumverate picks on
September 5th.
Everyone should respond, state your case, and vote well before the
draft weekend, so we can scout with the result in mind.
In respect to the brotherhood of the NSL,
Ken Boulett, Owner/Manager, Meatballs Baseball Club
I propose we review the keeper legislation again this year, letting
all voices be heard. Some of this may be a rehash of previous
discussions, but I think a 5-year review is warranted.
One of the original dissenters was Rob Hall, who advocated that all
players be available every year. He became "victim" of the process
one year when he failed to declare them, and was assigned a trio of
keepers by the Triumvirate. There have been various strategies
involved, whether to keep superstars or prospects, etc.
After posting the dollar values for players, it's easy to see that
even the first round will be more lackluster again. Indeed, this
process has led, in part, to the picking of Josh Willingham as a
first rounder by yours truly (hey, I won that year, so shush!)
Also, the keeper years have been dominated by the Seabass and
Targeese, although both have had a lower finish during that time as
well.
Therefore, I make two proposals
1) Keepers be phased out starting this year. Keepers who have already
been signed will remain with their teams through the end of their
contracts.
or
2) The keeper process be blown up immediately, and all players are
made immediately available.
Continuing as is would be the default, so there is no need for a
proposal to continue as is.
These proposals are made to stimulate (hopefully not heated)
discussion on the keeper rules. I believe proposal 1 would be most
fair if we decide to abandon the keeper rules. However, if there is
widespread support for proposal 2, is there a reason we can't abandon
it as is?
You're free to post on the NSL Yahoo Group (there is a link on the
top of Northstarleague.com -
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/northstarleague/) until the
Yahoo Fantasy Baseball goes live. Last year, this occurred on
February 16. I will do my best to ensure that our league number is on
the Eastern Seaboard (last year, we were 00936, which is actually San
Juan, PR).
Enjoy your scouting, gentlemen! We'll see you in 8 weeks!
