The fairly recent cold snap has caused disruption to schedules but most
affected meetings were re-arranged , and have produced the usual top quality
racing at all venues at this time of year , unfortunately the Alnwick meeting of
15/02 was cancelled due to snow on track, and an alternative convenent date
could not be found .
There are many good young riders coming through the ranks , but of note are
Alice Walker , the sixteen year old daughter of former lady's champion Lucy (nee
Crow ) , and 16 yr old Sam Twiston-Davies , son of the famous trainer Nigel
.Alice is of course the grand daughter of the famous point to point trainer
Sheila Crow , Alice rode her first winner at the Albrighton meeting on 25/01/09
, a feat also achieved by mother and grandaughter at their same age . Sam has
already achieved point to point and hunter chase wins, and was placed in the
Cheltenham foxhunter , and looks one to follow , considering his obvious talent
and the likely ammunition he will have from his parents.
In our areas, the Greenall brothers are prominent in the Yorkshire area
,especially Tom who is in strong contention for National championship ,Kelly
Bryson is again prominent in the Northern area , and Richard Burton is prominent
in the NW area .Richard is the one who has achieved most success especially with
his win on the Sheila Crow trained Cappableu in the Cheltenham foxhunter
.This was a remarkeble achievment for Cappahbleu as it was his first run
over regulation fences , although he has won both English P to Points in some
style .He is owned by the Rucker family and will now go on to run under rules
and trained by Evan Williams , a trainer with whom they have previous success
especially with their ' State of Play '
Cappableu is a horse to follow and could even be a future Cheltenham Gold Cup
contender , but his first aim is the Hennesey.
The next class race is the Aintree foxhunter run over the Grand National
fences on the Thursday of the Aintree meeting , followers of last years winner
Chrisy Beamish should not be discouraged by his Cheltenham run , this is not his
course but he does seem to savour Aintree
The Easter weekend is always the busiest for point to pointing ,of note is the
unique Flagg (near Buxton) meeting on Easter Tuesday , this is racing with a
difference ,the members race being run over the stone walls starting in Flagg
village , it is the only horse race track in Derbyshire , it is also the highest
UK course
