“Life Is A Wave” 2009 Coming to San Francisco

Save The Waves to honor Fernando Aguerre at Life Is A Wave event on May 14th

San Francisco, CA - Save The Waves Coalition announces its third annual Life Is A Wave benefit event, a yearly celebration of coastal environmentalism through music, art, film, and community activism. Life Is A Wave 2009 will roll in on May 14 from 6pm–midnight, once again at 111 Minna Gallery in downtown San Francisco. The multimedia event will feature live music from several innovative new bands, including Bay Area heavyweights Bayonics, as well as the fast-rising Kapakahi – both known for their dynamic mix of world beats and highly energetic live shows. Opening will be Clif Bar Inc.’s own Dung Beetles, along with DJs M3, OmarEtch, and DJ Paul.

This year Save The Waves will honor Reef founder, International Surfing Association President and philanthropist Fernando Aguerre as recipient of the 2009 Wave Saver Award, for his work and support defending coastlines around the world.

Sponsors of Life Is A Wave 2009 include Clif Bar, Jim Beam, Joie de Vivre Hotels, New Belgium Brewing, Ocean Vodka, Patagonia, Quiksilver Foundation, Zola Acaí, Mavericks Surf Ventures, Surfline, and 1% For The Planet. Additional sponsors will be announced closer to the event date.

Your right the best Spanish lessons are in antigua in guatemala but the surf there isn't real good and is pretty far from antigua anyway. They do have a few spots but what i saw was a miles long head high powerful closeout.  Check out el Salvador. Great right points or if your goofyfoot Peru

On the surfing front:

Linda Mar has been phenomenal these last 3 days. Yes I really do
mean that. No, really. 2-3 ft on the south end up to 7 ft+ on the
north end, makeable, fun. I've even riden waves with 2+ full turns
on a single wave. Phenomenal for Linda Mar. Little to no wind, very
lightly textured with air temperatures as warm as 50 degrees F, water
temps as warm as 50 degrees F. In the sun it feels as warm as 50
degrees F (no actually it feels warmer in the sun, maybe as warm as
60 degrees F).

Max's tip for the week: shorten up your leash rope. Your leash rope
may elongate in heavy conditions. Make sure your rail saver (the
wide part of your leash) is doing it's job and save yourself a ding
repair. I'm learning this the dumb hard way. Back to the repair
shop for the new Stretch! ouch.

Hope you are all getting out there!
Happy New Year!

awww, sorry about that.  Most of the time I never know until I pull up in the parking lot.  If it's any consolation, today was good but not as good as the past 3 days.  The swell picked up by a couple of feet and that made it more closed-outie.  Wind remained light and texture was light with sunny warm 50 degree weather.

Wed. looks like a repeat of Tues.
Thurs looks to be more lightly windy onshore.
Friday looks good with winds backing down a bit, and swell dying down to a better size for Linda Mar.

I think that lashing wind storm we had on Christmas day has improved Linda quite a bit, blowing more sand to the beach and setting up favourable sandbars we've needed for some time.

But don't hold me to any of that!  These are my best guesses!

Hope you're all getting out there for these beautiful freezing waves!

Mahalo!

Darrick Doerner's Twelve Ocean Safety Tips
Surf Safety Advice for Surfers of all Levels and Abilities

1. Spend time watching the waves and conditions before paddling out to
a surf spot. Wait at least fifteen minutes to see how big the waves
are. Otherwise, you may be deceived by a lull between sets into
thinking that the waves are smaller than they actually are.

2. Always look for warning signs posted by the lifeguards. "No
Swimming" means you could get swept out to sea. "Dangerous Shorebreak"
means you could break your neck by bodysurfing the shorebreak. Talk to
the lifeguards about the surf conditions and dangers, as they may vary
from day to day and even hour to hour. Ask a lot of questions. They
will give you the answers you will need to stay safe.

3. Learn the areas where you surf. Go with people who know the spot
and ask the following:
a. Where to paddle out and where to paddle in? You don't want to
paddle in on dry reef or wash up on the rocks.
b. How do the tides affect the surf spot? Understand how the waves
change and whether it gets dangerously shallow at low tide.
c. Which swell directions work best for the surf spot?
d. Which way does the current go?
e. What are the dangers of that particular surf spot (e.g., rocks,
piers, jetties, shorebreaks, jellyfish, etc.)?

4. When surfing at any surf spot, envision the worst case scenario.
For instance, prepare a mental plan for swimming into shore if you
break your leash or snap your surfboard. Don't paddle out into
conditions that you can't handle.

5. Learn to recognize rip tides. If you get stuck in a rip tide, swim
perpendicular to its flow to get out of it and then swim towards
shore. Never try to fight a rip tide.

6. Try not to fall or jump off of your board, as it could spear
someone or bounce back and hit you. Ride the wave as long as you can
and then kick out and lay back down on your board. If you do need to
jump off, fall backwards so that the whitewash will push your board
towards shore (and away from you)

7. Use the "starfish" if you fall off of your surfboard on a reef
break. This means falling flat on your back with arms and legs spread
out, to minimize the chance of hitting the reef. Don't kick off the
bottom to get to the surface as you will cut your feet. Wait until the
turbulence stops and use your arms to swim to the surface.

8. Depending on the surf spot, know when to kick out of a wave so that
you don't end up in an extremely shallow area. Be careful with wave
selection for the same reason, i.e., don't take off on close-outs
where you will end up getting caught inside in a shallow area.

9. Beach breaks (sand bottom) are relatively safe. They are good for
beginner and intermediate surfers and fun for all ages. Reef breaks
(coral and rock bottom) are great wave providers but create dangerous
conditions. They are for intermediate to pro surfers and require more
advanced skills.

10. Larger waves create strong currents which are more dangerous if
you are not aware of them. Smaller waves create less current and are
easier to ride, but be prepared to deal with more people and
inexperienced and/or dangerous surfers in the line-up.

11. Be aware of the people in the line-up. Never paddle into a wave if
you risk running someone over. As much as you may not want to "waste"
the wave, it is not worth it. There will always be another wave. Avoid
ditching your board if a wave breaks in front of you. If you have to
ditch your board, always look behind you to make sure there's nobody
behind you.

12. Don't surf alone, especially if a surf spot is really far out.
Know your limits. When in doubt don't go out. When it comes to the
ocean, it is always better to be safe than sorry. Never turn your back
on the ocean, always respect its power, and learn from its signs.

Sorry about that last reply to everyone who subscribe to the postings

difficulty getting through to Darwin on what is appropriate material
for everyone in this surf group. I've changed some group settings
and I hope this will remedy the situation. I hope you will all be
patient and bear with us through this.

On the surfing front:

Linda Mar has been phenomenal these last 3 days. Yes I really do
mean that. No, really. 2-3 ft on the south end up to 7 ft+ on the

Max's tip for the week: shorten up your leash rope. Your leash rope
may elongate in heavy conditions. Make sure your rail saver (the
wide part of your leash) is doing it's job and save yourself a ding

Hope you are all getting out there!
