Please come by for a refreshing beverage.  Sorry for the late notice.

The party next Wednesday is to take the children from a shelter for homeless families here in SF sledding in Tahoe this winter. For most of these children it will be the first time they have ever seen snow and this experience will be something that they remember their entire lives.
I volunteered at this shelter a few years ago and it is truly an amazing place.

There will be free food (provided by the Pizza Place on Noriega), a kick ass DJ, a raffle for the most beautiful surfboard I have ever seen (and other cool stuff ) and there is no cover charge.

Thanks,
Jeff

The event details and jpg of the flier and photo of the board are below. Please help spread the word by inviting your friends.

Red Cross Helping American Samoa Tsunami Victims

Wednesday, September 30, 2009 —

The American Red Cross is on the ground in American Samoa where a tsunami swept across the island after a powerful earthquake hit the South Pacific.

Red Cross has dozens of volunteers already providing food and supplies to those on the island.  A team of 50 volunteers is being sent in to supplement the efforts of the local Red Cross team.  The Red Cross has a warehouse on American Samoa supplied with cots, flashlights, and cooking and clean-up supplies, and will be sending in additional supplies as quickly as possible.

“We will get there as quickly as we can with what we can,” said Joe Becker, senior vice president for Red Cross Disaster Services.  “Our first priority is to provide food and water.”  After yesterday’s 8.0 magnitude earthquake and resulting tsunami, a significant portion of American Samoa is without power or water amid widespread damage.

Getting information out of the island is very slow at this time.  The Red Cross urges those who have been able to contact loved ones on American Samoa to register them with Safe and Well, the best way to share information about their status.  You can register on the Red Cross Safe and Well Website at www.redcross.org.  If you do not have internet access, call 1-800-REDCROSS to register your loved ones.  The information you post will let other loved ones know about the well-being of those on the island.  Please note - Safe and Well works only on American Samoa.  The service will not work on Samoa.

American Samoa, a group of seven islands about 2,300 miles southwest of Hawaii, is a United States Territory.  American Samoa and the independent country of Western Samoa make up the Samoan group of islands in the center of Polynesia.  According to news reports, four tsunami waves about 15 to 20 feet high came ashore on American Samoa after the earthquake in the South Pacific.

Your financial support will help the Red Cross respond to disasters like this situation in the Samoan islands.  You can make a donation by calling 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767) or (1-800-257-7575 (Spanish), or visiting redcross.org, and choosing whether to donate to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund or American Red Cross International Response Fund.

Help people affected by disasters like the recent earthquakes and floods by donating to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.  On those rare occasions when donations exceed Red Cross expenses for a specific disaster, contributions are used to prepare for and serve victims of other disasters. Your gift enables the Red Cross to prepare for disasters and provide shelter, food, emotional support and other assistance to victims of all disasters. Call 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767) or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish). Contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund may be sent to your local American Red Cross chapter or to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013. Internet users can make a secure online contribution by visiting redcross.org.

SurfAid Padang Earthquake Update.  Saturday 3 October 2009:

Two major earthquakes have hit the Padang, West Sumatra, region - the initial 7.6 on Wednesday evening and then a 6.6 quake on Thursday morning.  Padang, the gateway to the Mentawai Islands and where most of the surf charter boats are based, has been seriously damaged and the death toll is more than 1,100 but there are fears that thousands more are still trapped beneath the rubble of collapsed buildings.

SurfAid has gone into emergency mode and has staff doing assessments of the needs of the people in the coastal areas south of Padang, which are heavily populated and impoverished.  SurfAid had Mentawai health program staff already in Padang and they have been reassigned to emergency work.  SurfAid will respond to the immediate urgent needs with medical staff and supplies.  SurfAid has eight doctors and three nurses preparing medical supplies.

SurfAid is buying tents, tarpaulins, food, water and sanitation and medical supplies in Medan, North Sumatra, and getting these to Padang.

The SurfAid office in Padang survived, however the internet system is down, along with electricity and phones, so a priority is to get a new internet system in place along with satellite phones and gensets for power, along with fresh water as the mains water supply is cut off.

SurfAid's Program Director, Dr David Lange, who has been with the organisation less than a month, narrowly escaped from the Ambacang Hotel just before it collapsed.  The people behind him didn't make it out and last night emergency crews were using heavy lifting equipment to try to locate any survivors.  The Ambacang is a well-known stopover hotel for surfers heading out to the Mentawai Islands.

SurfAid is still trying to locate five of its Indonesian staff in Padang.  Sixty Australians were still unaccounted for last night.

SurfAid CEO and Founder Dr Dave Jenkins is in Bali and will fly into Padang when we have our communications systems in place. SurfAid Chief Operating Officer Andrew Judge is in Medan, North Sumatra, hoping to get on one of the full flights to Padang today.

The SurfAid speedboat Sibex was dispatched to a village in Siberut yesterday to check on reports that a school and mosque had collapsed.

SurfAid Mentawai Program Manager Tom Plummer is heading to Padang from his base in Tua Pejat, the regional capital of the Mentawais.  His house in Padang is completely flattened.  Luckily his pregnant wife, Sas, had just left for the USA. "Thankfully she left on Tuesday, the day before the first earthquake," Tom said.  "She had finished a contract with an aid organisation in Aceh and had just shipped all her belongings down to our house in Padang. I haven't told her yet that there's nothing left."

SurfAid Program Director Dr David Lange filed the first report to SurfAid staff after his narrow escape on Wednesday evening: "That was a very large earthquake. I don't know the size yet but large chunks of glass and brick walls of the hotel I was in came down all around me. I can't imagine how I got out. It was like the floor was falling away as I ran over it. I lost my passport, communications, all my money. The city is burning, infrastructure appears damaged (water lines, sewer lines, power lines are down). We need medical supplies, food, shelter and transportation. I would guess hundreds are dead and significant infrastructure damage worthy of a significant response.

“I have only scrapes. I’m in a safe place. We are going to set up a field hospital now. I’m using someone else’s computer and won’t be able to communicate.”

A few hours later, David filed this report: “I just can’t believe I’m alive. The people right behind me didn’t make it out, the blocks from the hotel were falling all around me.

“One hospital, called Silasi, is completely ruined and non-functional. One other private hospital is damaged severely but functioning out of tents. The main public hospital I did not assess. The Ambacang Hotel and Spice Homestay are both collapsed, with lots of westerners in the Ambacang.

“I saw dozens of the biggest buildings collapsed in town, most of the damage is concentrated in the commercial centre markets, the main pasar, which was fully packed. The one-storey homes seem OK but people aren’t staying in them because of fear. Water mains are ruined and power lines are down. No fuel is available right now.

“People are trapped and screaming for help but they are below huge slabs that will take heavy equipment and there is none.  I would expect hundreds dead when the final toll is known, but the big issue is that the normal infrastructure is down. We should focus on supporting infrastructure: tents, tent clinics, clean water, food.”

SurfAid has launched the SurfAid Padang Earthquake Relief Appeal. You can donate via our website at

No California tsunami warning from magnitude 7.9 American Samoa earthquake

September 29, 2009 | 11:46 am

A magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck in Pacific Ocean near American Samoa today, but officials have not issued a tsunami warning for the California coast.

The temblor hit about 10:48 p.m. PDT, and there was no immediate word of injuries or damage.

Federal authorities said it's unclear whether the quake formed a tsunami -- but even if it did, there isno danger to the Pacific coast of California, Oregon or Washington at this time.

Officials did issue a watch for the Hawaiian Islands as well as other island areas, including New Zealand and New Guinea.

American Samoa is more than 4,000 miles from Los Angeles.

Mountaintop removal coal mining is an atrocious form of strip mining that literally explodes the tops of mountains to get at coal buried beneath. To date, 500 mountains have been destroyed by this horrible practice, over 1200 miles of streams and rivers buried by it's debris. Not only is traditional Appalachian culture being wiped out by the mining industry the residents have developed an array of health issues due to the air pollution and water contamination caused by Mountain top removal.

Hi,

I am interested in finding a compatible housemate to rent a gorgeous 2 bedroom,
2.5 bath condo at Portola Shores. The condo has been recently updated with
tile/granite kitchen, hardwood floors, a jacuzzi bath tub in the master bedroom
bath, maple kitchen cabinets, the works! This condo is split level with the
kitchen, dining, and living room +.5 bath above and the two bedrooms and 2 full
baths + washer/dryer below. I believe there is a two car garage included (not
carport, but real enclosed garage).

If you surf Linda MAr, you've seen the yellow complex nestled into the hillside
above Wander Inn. This unit is in there. <5 minute walk to the beach!

Owner is asking 2600/mo rent. Interested? Let's chat. I am a clean, neat,
full-time professional working for a software company in Palo Alto. I love
surfing too.

I was rinsing off at the shower at LM this morning and noticed a sign for a
memorial paddle out. I was just assuming it was a some old guy who was a

Hello my name is Michael, I used to live in the Norcal area back in 2002/2003
(eureka/arcata) when i lived there i used to frequent such places as patricks
point, luffenhotz, clam beach, moon beach etc. I knew wade and grant at Saltys
(was bummed to hear they went under like humboldt surf did as well) I am looking
at hopefully within the next few months as soon as I can to relocate back there
with my sweetie and wanted to get to know people and make some new friends. as
far as surfing well; i am a Goofy, like all types of surf though i am somewhat
partial to longboards, i did alot of body surfing and boogie boarding (given at
the time my finances could not afford a regular board) so honestly my skill
level is seriously grom as far as board riding, but once i do get out there
getting a board is priority number one. look forward to hearing form you all.

-----

A few weeks ago, 4/16/09, Obama's Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar held the last of 4 regional public hearings here in San Francisco on whether to continue with one of the final acts of the Bush Administration, the lifting of the moratorium on offshore drilling.  The Secretary presented a report by the Minerals Management Service (MMS) on the energy resources of the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS).  In attendance were, public officials, Barbara Boxer and the Governor of Oregon amoung others, citizens, activists and petroleum industry lobbyists.
The latter part of the day was devoted to taking comments from the public.  I filled out a comment card on behalf of the 600 or so surfers of the NorCal Surfing Group asking the Secretary to view our unspoiled natural coastline as a resource for recreation and quality of life and to not allow for the expansion of offshore drilling and to encourage the development of renewable and environmentally responsible sources of energy.

There was a rally in the middle of the day.  Jeff, the bartender at the Riptide's Wet. Weds. performed a piece, "Drill, Baby, Drill" with his guerilla theater group.  Videoed and edited by yours truly, first ever.  Check it out for it's big screen premier Wed. at the Riptide or check it out here:

Mahalo!

About Fernando Aguerre: Fernando Aguerre was born and raised in the coastal city of Mar del Plata, Argentina. After completing law school in Argentina, he moved to the U.S. and with his brother co-founded Reef, a successful sandal and surfwear company, which they sold in 2005.  He has created or been involved with dozens of charitable and surfing-related organizations, including the International Surfing Association, where he currently serves as president, Surfrider Argentina (co-founder), SurfAid International (Chairman Advisory Board), Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (co-founder, SIMA Humanitarian Fund Vice President, Liquid Nation Ball Chairman), and numerous others. Fernando continues to donate his time and other resources to the many organizations in which he participates, as member, advisor or board member, always as an unpaid volunteer, in search of his dream of a better world. He continues to surf daily near his home in La Jolla, California.
