hi yvette,

i surfed in maui a couple years ago. it was great!
i rented a shortboard from a surf shop very close to the airport. i
can't remember the name of it, but you might want to look online and
find the one near the airport area. (it's maybe 15-20 minutes from
the airport). they were really cool and had a pretty good
selection. (they rent surfboards and windsurf equipmnt). you might
also want to call in advance and see if they have what you are
looking for.

if i can remember the name, i'll let you know.

have fun!

Hey all- I'll be moving into the sunset this weekend, 7 blocks from the beach off of Ulloa (one block south of Taraval).  I'll mostly be dawn patrolling and going on weekend, so let me know if anyone wants to meet up for a morning session.  I longboard, and am trying to also drop down to something smaller.

Ahhh... internet.

We're into Round 3 now. Some big upsets in Round 2, Taj, Parko, Occy are out.
The
wildcards are in form and dangerous.
Some interesting match ups today:
Fanning vs. Reynolds
Machado vs. Kelly
Andy vs. Jordy

Check out the action live webcast here:

http://www.boostmobilepro.com

Check out the highlights from day 1. The highlights from the 3 man heats with
no priority
as the pros hassle each other as World titles, livelihoods and pride are on the
line. Bobby
actually sits on his competitor, Taj knocks Jordy down, Jordy flips the
S.African bird. It's
good to see a little fire in their bellies. And you thought the Hook was tough.

Also check out Heat #9, Kelly, Dane and Corey Lopez in an absolute aerial
shootout.

http://www.boostmobilepro.com/videos.asp?rday=1#video_player

Pretty cool stuff. Logos and all.

Based on rates and availability,  I prefer to stay in a condo in S. Kihei or at the Kea Lani in Wailea.  There is a cheap hostel in Paia called the Rainbow's End.  A local recommended a small surf shop with good quality boards in Makaha,  but I can't think of the name.  There are a few cheap Boss Froggs rental shops, but their boards are pretty banged up - cheap though.  Also look into Maui Tropics(Paia) or Ole's(Lahaina). The surf will all depend on the current swells,  so it's best to listen to the surf reports on the radio or read local newspapers to know where to go.  I love surfing Ho`okipa with Kona winds or in the mornings with little to no wind at all.

Here is what my Stormrider guide shows for October:

Dominant Swell: S-NE
Swell Size: 4-5ft
Consistency: 50%
----------------------------
Dominant Wind: NE-E
Average Force: F4
Consistency: 77%
------------------------------
Water Temp: 81 degrees F
(Boardshorts!)

The ASP Tour is having their one and only US stop, starting this
weekend. Right now I'm putting together a pile of camping gear as
myself and a few other folks are staying at San Onofre State Beach
which is just a short walk to the break (and the contest). I was just
wondering if anyone else was headed down -- if so we should meet up
for a beer or something.

I'm kinda excited. Current standings:

#1 Mick Fanning
#2 Taj
#3 Andy Irons
#4 Kelly Slater
#5 Parko

Plus, Rob Machado will be surfing in this one. I mean, c'mon. This is
just too good!

I might post up a pic or two when I get back. Enjoy the waves. Save me
a couple. I have a feeling I won't be getting any at Trestles with 44
pros hanging around and about a million hot locals in the water.
That's a little too crowded for my taste.

There are a few of us going down at various times. We still have room for you
if you want
to come. Come for the whole week or make a long weekend of it. Looks like we
have a
4ft. SW rolling into Trestles through Sat. There's hurricane Henrietta rolling
by Cabo, I'm
hoping will send some waves up to Lower's to keep it interesting. Should be
good times
for all. Come see the splendid spectacle of professional surfing. Join us!

I'm going to try to post more details later. It's gonna be a hectic week.

Mahalo!

The Jetty's been good for the past few days with that south swell running. On a lower or mid tide good picking out of a shoulder has served up fast 4-5ft rights. The sets have been inconsistent so 15 minute waits have been par for the course. There's also occasional workable lefts (that's actually what dumped me up today). If you're having problems picking the right time to go there go when there's a South West swell above 4ft, a decent sized straight West swell, or a really huge North Western. Marginal North West swells (what we've mainly been seeing for the past two months due to winds) or straight South swells don't get in there. And yes, I'll be using the neck method from here on out.

Sorry that sucks!

OK 1 more time... I wear mine around my neck. From windsurfing, kiteboarding & surfing. Never lost a key!

Humor me, and give it a try.

I'm looking for a travel buddy/buddies to go down to CR with for a week
or so. I want to take a week in Oct or Nov, so I am flexible with the
dates. I normally go to Guanacaste area, but am willing to try a new
area. Just want to live the Pura Vida lifestyle for a while and do some
surfing, but I'd rather not go alone. I'm a female (33) and really laid
back. Not looking for a hook-up just cool people to hang and travel
with. Anyone interested???

A little note on the mega swell due to hit west coast of Australia on
Saturday. 60-70'+ waves expected..

The BIGGER NEWS is our fierce storm that is off of Antarctica and it
is moving rather slowly into the SE portion of the Indian Ocean. It
has had a substantial fetch of 45-55+ knot winds directed right at the
West coast and we may even see a few stronger gusts into Thursday
morning. We will start to see some very long period SW groundswell
centered on 220-230+ degrees for later Friday and then the surf will
be booming into Saturday with some very large deepwater swell that
will give most of the SW facing breaks 20-30 foot surf (face heights)
and the premier SW facing spots and outer breaks will see double those
sizes with some larger monster sets that hopefully somebody will
successfully ride or even photograph. The swell should stay very
strong and pretty much hold into early Sunday for the SW coast but we
will still be calling for massive surf throughout the day along the SW
facing breaks.

Today, while surfing Pump House at Linda Mar I was sitting outside with a couple other surfers. About 300-400 feet further out near a flock of birds I witnessed a smaller shark entirely breach the water vertically and splash back down. Following the breach there was splashing for about a minute and I once again saw the shark's vertical tail fin. Two other kids saw it and one guy, who didn't see it, clearly didn't believe me and brushed it off as a bird. I surf there and Ocean Beach 3-4 times a week and have seen plenty of dolphins, pelicans, seagulls and seals. I know what I saw and it was neither. I can't really estimate length, but it was probably 5-7 feet. I'd say it was either a very juvenile white shark or some other species. It didn't scare me enough to get me right out of the water, but I did go in after the next set came through. Keep your legs up out of the water!
